WELCOME TO CHRONIC WELLNESS
This page is dedicated to all those willing to let wellness become a habit.
I am a middle-aged woman who after years of misdiagnosis was finally diagnosed in 1990 with Graves' disease (an autoimmune illness, by definition chronic, and a hyperthyroid condition) and Hashimoto's disease (an autoimmune illness, again chronic and a hypothyroid condition). In 1991 I received standard U.S. treatment for Graves' disease, radioactive iodine. I was removed from the danger of thyroid storm, however, to my dismay, this did not make me feel "better" nor was I "cured". Dr. Christiane Northrup says, "There is a difference between healing and curing. Healing is a natural process and is within the power of everyone. Curing, which is what doctors are called upon to do, usually consists of an external treatment and medication or surgery is used to mask or eliminate symptoms. This external treatment doesn't necessarily address the factors that contribute to the symptoms in the first place. Healing goes deeper than curing and must always come from within." I have grown to understand that healing takes time and calls for a look at causes and not just the alleviation of symptoms. I have stopped looking for a quick fix-there is no quick fix for chronic illness. Since diagnosis, living with my illness and running a support group for over a decade, I have become aware that there is a strong need to educate, encourage, and empower all thyroid patients, their families, friends and physicians.

Part 1: INTRODUCTION This is a large topic so we have split it into four manageable sized portions.
This page introduces hyperthyroidism. Subsequent pages are listed at the bottom which
address more specific details of making the diagnosis, the causes, and different treatment options.
In healthy people, the thyroid makes just the right amounts of two hormones , T4 and T3, which have important actions throughout the body. These hormones regulate many aspects of our metabolism, eventually affecting how many calories we burn, how warm we feel, and how much we weigh. In short, the thyroid "runs" our metabolism. These hormones also have direct effects on most organs, including the heart which beats faster and harder under the influence of thyroid hormones. Essentially all cells in the body will respond to increases in thyroid hormone with an increase in the rate at which they conduct their business. Hyperthyroidism is the medical term to describe the signs and symptoms associated with an over production of thyroid hormone. For an overview of how thyroid hormone is produced and how its production is regulated check out our thyroid hormone production page.

Red Wine contains a substance that fights thyroid cancer
The skins of red wine grapes contain Resveratrol, in high concentration. It is therefore found in high concentration in red wine, but not white wine. 3 mgs/liter is found in red wine. This can stop cancers cells from growing. Thyroid cancer cell growth was inhibited by the substance Resveratrol, found In red wine. Both papillary and Follicular carcinoma cell lines were inhibited.

TAPAZOLE® Lilly Methimazole Antithyroid Action And Clinical Pharmacology: Methimazole inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones and thus is effective in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. The drug does not inactivate existing thyroxine and triiodothyronine that are stored in colloid or are circulating in the blood, nor does it interfere with the effectiveness of thyroid hormones given by mouth or by injection.
The actions and use of methimazole are similar to those of propylthiouracil. On a weight basis, the drug is at least 10 times as potent as propylthiouracil, but methimazole may be less consistent in action.
Methimazole is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is metabolized rapidly and requires frequent administration. Methimazole is excreted in the urine.
Indications And Clinical Uses: The medical treatment of hyperthyroidism. Long-term therapy may lead to remission of the disease. May be used to ameliorate hyperthyroidism in preparation for subtotal thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy. When thyroidectomy is contraindicated or not advisable.
    Contra-Indications: Hypersensitivity to methimazole.

Causes Clinical Signs Diagnosis Treatment [NOTE: To appreciate the content of this page, The reader is encouraged to read the thyroid hormone primer before proceeding down this page.... Introduction (Causes) Feline hyperthyroidism is a disease of middle and older age cats resulting from excessive amounts of circulating thyroid hormones (T4 and T3 ). The cause is most often associated with benign but functional adenomatous hyperplasia of one or both lobes of the thyroid gland or of extra-thyroid-gland thyroid tissues. These tissues secrete thyroid hormone autonomously, in the absence of TSH secretion from the pituitary gland ( see primer for explanation ). Rarely (only 1-2%), hyperthyroidism occurs as the result of a malignant, functional thyroid carcinoma.
Clinical Signs Excessive thyroid hormone results in the stimulation of metabolic process processes in nearly all tissues of the body . There are many potential clinical signs, ( see pictorial montage below too ) but the most common are:
    • Weight loss, decreased muscle mass, emaciation, weakness
    • Increased appetite
    • Tachycardia (rapid heart) and hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • Heart murmur and/or arrhythmias, secondary hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart muscle thickening with compromised cardiac performance, possible congestive heart failure)

    ...
How much will this treatment cost?

What is hyperthyroidism? Hyperthyroidism is the most common hormonal disease of cats resulting from secretion of excess thyroid hormone (T ). The average age of onset is 13 years of age. Thyroid hormone (T ) is responsible for regulating the metabolic rate of all cells in the body, which results in an overstimulation of nearly all organ systems. This overstimulation puts significant and ultimately fatal stresses on the body. How does hyperthydoidism affect my cat? 95% of hyperthyroid cats are classical in their presentation and exhibit some or all of the following: excessive appetite, weight loss, attitude changes, overactive, aggressive, tremors, increased vocalization, hair loss/unkept coat, excessive drinking, excessive urinating, vomiting and/or diarrhea.
5% of hyperthyroid cats are apathetic in their presentation.
