Refraction refers to the way in which light rays are bent by the focusing system of the eye on to the retina in the back of the eye ; in this regard , it is often said that the eye is like a camera and the retina like the film in the camera. Three factors can influence the refractive state of the eye : 1) the shape of the clear front surface of the eye ( the cornea ) , 2) the shape of the human lens inside the eye , and 3) the axial length of the eye from front to back . The shape of the cornea performs 2/3 of the job of refracting light into the eye while the shape of the lens performs 1/3 of the job of refracting light rays onto the retina . Emmetropia Myopia Hyperopia Emmetropia refers to a refractive state in which light rays come to a sharp focus on the retina without corrective lenses . Nearsightedness , termed myopia , is a condition where the refractive state of the eye is too strong , and light rays come to a focus in front of the retina . Often , this is a result of the corneal curvature being too steep or the axial length of the eye being too long . A nearsighted person can see well up close but has difficulty with distance vision . Hyperopia Clinical Module Submitted To FDA for Review and Approval

-Fremont, California, September 30, 2002-
Nidek, Inc. announced today that it has submitted its Hyperopia PMA Clinical Module to the FDA for review and approval for hyperopia, hyperopic astigmatism and mixed astigmatism indication on the Nidek EC-5000 Excimer Laser System . This marks the final step in gaining commercialization approval by the FDA to market and treat indications of hyperopia with the Nidek EC-5000 Laser System. This also marks the start of the 180-day approval processing timeline with the FDA.
Nidek's EC-5000 Excimer Laser System is currently approved for the reduction and elimination of myopia in the low, moderate and high ranges from -0.75 to -13.00 diopters (D) and moderate myopia with astigmatism ranging in severity from -1.00 to -8.00 D, with a refractive astigmatism from -0.50 to -4.00 D cylinder by manifest refraction, using both LASIK (Laser in-situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy).
"Nidek is dedicated to providing the highest quality solutions and treatment therapies for quality patient care and surgical outcomes," states Mr. Okada. "The EC-5000 provides expanded treatment options, parameters and an innovative, technologically advanced platform for Refractive Surgery. The Nidek EC-5000 platform is designed for surgeons' present use as well as future needs, as the field of Refractive Surgery continues to advance and grow. Nidek is actively working on developing and launching its own custom ablation and wavefront technology platform with the Nidek EC-5000 Excimer Laser System. Currently this technology is available internationally and will soon be introduced in the U.S. once clinical studies and regulatory processes are done," stated Mr. Okada.

What is Hyperopia?
Hyperopia or farsightedness is a very common refractive disorder, affecting up to 62% of people over the age of 40. With hyperopia, you may see objects that are far away, but have difficulty focusing on near objects. You may also find that you can see things clearly, but have to strain your eyes to maintain focus.
Hyperopia occurs when the eyeball is too short or the cornea is too flat. When light enters a hyperopic (short) eyeball, it is focused behind the retina instead of directly on the retina where light must be directed for normal vision. Because of this, the focusing apparatus of the eye must constantly work to compensate and focus images.
Symptoms and options
Symptoms of hyperopia include blurred vision, eyestrain or headaches (especially when reading or at the end of the day). They will increase over time. Doctors prescribe a "plus" or convex corrective lens, in the form of eyeglasses or contacts, for the disorder. Hyperopia can also be corrected by steepening the central cornea using a vision procedure such as laser surgery or NearVision CK (Conductive Keratoplasty

HYPEROPIA
By Robert S. McElvaine , Reply by Garry Wills
In response to The Party Isn't Over June 15, 1978 To the Editors Like most of his writing, Carry Wills's "The Party isn't Over" ( NYR , June 15) is enjoyable and suggestive. His remarks on the nature of television's importance to American politics are penetrating. He is also on solid ground in his portrayal of much of what Henry Fuirlie says in The Parties: Republicans and Democrats in this Century as nonsense. Unfortunately, however. Mr. Wills's eye for political misinterpretation seems hyperopic. He rightly takes Mr. Fairlic to task for reducing the South to "the-blacks, the farmers, and the rednecks." Yet earlier in the same sentence Wills himself had reduced the white South to one category: "rednecks." That President Carter narrowly lost the white Southern vote does not necessarily mean that he lost the "rednecks." Contrary to popular belief, some whites in this region shade the area below their hairlines with collars, white, blue, or polkadat, Perhaps some of these whitenecks voted for Gerald Ford. Mr. Wills's analysis ignores two critical points: 1) to win the South it is no longer necessary to carry a majority of white voters: and 2) the South is no longer "the single largest homogeneous block of voters" in the nation. That distinction belongs to the Mountain West, with its increasingly conservative Republican representation in Congress. For several years the trend in the South has been away from the traditional racisl, reactionary $$$milirarlers who, with good cause, strike fear in Mr. Wills's heart.

If you are farsighted, you have more trouble seeing up close than you do in the distance. However, it also means that you use your focusing system even out in the distance in order to make objects clear. People that don't have any farsightedness are at rest in the distance and don't need to use their focusing power to see clearly. The Farsighted Eye
Intro:
Hyperopia (i.e farsightedness) is much less common than myopia or emmetropia. It is typically in the +1.00 to +4.00 diopter range, rarely it can be as high as +8.00 diopters.
Optics:
In contrast to myopia, hyperopia occurs when the eye is too short for the power of its optical components. In hyperopia, the cornea is not steep enough and light rays hit the retina before they come into focus. In the picture above the light rays are shown to focus behind the eye (arrow). Distant objects appear blurred, and nearby objects are even more fuzzy. Most farsighted individuals need corrective eyewear to see clearly at all distances.
Spectacle Correction:
Correction of hyperopia requires a lens which is convex (i.e. thicker in the middle than the edges). This acts as a magnifier, and causes objects to appear bigger by 2% per diopter. For this reason hyperopes while wearing their spectacle correction, appear to have "big" eyes. Optical abberations and decreased peripheral vision occur are likely to occur with large amounts of hyperopia.
Contact Lens Correction:
Contact lens correction reduces the optical problems that plague spectacle lenses, but they have their own unique problems including high-maintance care solutions, corneal warpage, corneal suffocation, corneal infections, and eyelid allergies.

Correction of Hyperopia in Children Study (CHICS)
What is hyperopia?
Hyperopia is often called farsightedness. Children who are farsighted need to exert more effort in order to see clearly. As a result, they may not be able to see as well at near. It can also cause children to have difficulty concentrating, blurred vision, eyestrain, fatigue and/or headaches with close work.
How common is farsightedness?
Moderate to high hyperopia affects approximately one in six school-aged children.
What causes farsightedness?
Farsightedness occurs if your eye is too short or the cornea has too little curvature, so light entering your eye is not focused correctly.
What is the Correction of Hyperopia In Children Study (CHICS)?
There is controversy regarding whether or not it is necessary to treat moderate amounts of farsightedness in children. The Correction of Hyperopia In Children Study is being conducted so that eye doctors can learn more about hyperopia and how best to treat it. Approximately 80 children will take part in the study at several pediatric eye care centers in the United States.
