Coronary Artery Blockage This disease is genetic and inherited, although the specific defective genes have not been identified. The person's cholesterol or triglyceride levels become elevated during the teenage years and continue throughout life. The types of elevated lipoproteins may vary between affected family members. Cholesterol deposits in the skin, called xanthomas, which are seen in other disorders of elevated lipoproteins are rarely seen in this disorder. HEART UK The Family Heart Association merged with the British Hyperlipidaemia Association in 2002 to form HEART UK (Hyperlipidaemia Education And Research Trust). The organisation provides information and support for patients and families with inherited high cholesterol, and is committed to tracing people in the UK with this trait. The site provides details of the association's activities and membership, events, and fact and diet sheets for patients and others interested in maintaining low cholesterol levels. There is also a section for health professionals, which includes a series of advice sheets on management of coronary heart disease and hypercholesterolaemia, and a CHD and stroke risk assessor (requiring Excel 5 or higher). Some patient factsheets are available in PDF, requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader.

    Definition
Hyperlipidemia is an abnormally high level of fatty substances called lipids in the blood. Lipids include cholesterol and triglycerides. There are five primary types of hyperlipidemia. The type depends on which lipid in the blood is high. If not treated, high lipids can cause heart disease, hardening of the arteries, or stroke.
    Causes
    Causes may include:
    • A family history of hyperlipidemia A diet high in total fat, saturated fat, or cholesterol Obesity Certain conditions, including:
      • Diabetes Low thyroid Kidney problems Liver disease Cushing's syndrome
      Certain drugs, such as
      • Hormones or birth control pills Beta-blockers Some diuretics Cortisone drugs Isotretinoin (for acne)
      Risk Factors
