Every day, the human body perspires to maintain constant internal body temperature. Perspiration is regulated by the Sympathetic Nervous System, which controls about five million sweat glands in the body, with about half of these being located in the hands. Sweating in the right hand is controlled by branches of the right sympathetic chain that is located within the right chest cavity. Sweating in the left hand is controlled by branches of the left sympathetic chain that is located in the left chest. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes perspiration far greater than the physiological needs of the body. The most common areas where hyperhidrosis occurs are the hands, feet and face, primarily in adolescents, and its cause is unknown. This site will focus on excessive sweating of the hands, also known as Essential Palmar Hyperhidrosis.
Persons with palmar hyperhidrosis often seek treatment because the condition almost always causes great distress, which may impair their quality of life causing numerous psychological, educational, and occupational problems. Palmar hyperhidrosis may not seem like a serious enough problem to warrant surgery, but individuals who suffer from hyperhidrosis deal with everything from minor issues such as smudged paper to major ones such as difficulty holding pens, tools, buttons and social isolation. Perhaps the most distressing result of palmar hyperhidrosis is the discomfort and embarrassment caused by the simple act of shaking hands. In fact, many patients with palmar hyperhidrosis will avoid social situations or pick a profession that requires little interaction with others.

Hyperhidrosis, Excessive Sweating
The medical term for excessive sweating is hyperhidrosis. The problem may be limited to a few problem areas or may be all over. The armpits and the palms are the areas most often troublesome. Excessive sweating starts after puberty. It may be present to some degree all the time, but is at it's worst when under stress such as during exams, interviews or dating. Excess sweating that affects areas other than the armpits and palms may a sign of serious problems. Systemic, neurological and anxiety conditions need to be ruled out; however most cases have no underlying cause.
Most over-the-counter antiperspirants are not strong enough to do the job. The best product is available by prescription (Drysol). It is somewhat irritating and will stain clothing. It is applied at bedtime to completely dry skin. It is washed off in the morning shower. Do not use a regular deodorant afterwards. Repeat the treatment nightly until the sweating is under control. If it does not work after one or two weeks, begin covering the affected area with a square of "saran wrap" overnight. After it begins to work, use once or twice weekly to maintain the effect, and use a regular deodorant on the other days. The medication is less effective on the thick skin of the palms and soles.
If these treatments don't work well enough there are alternatives. Botox injections, a treatment now popular for wrinkles, will stop sweating for 6 or 8 months, but is expensive. On the palms, it may cause mild, temporary weakness of the grip. Oral Robinul pills are very safe and will decrease sweating, but they have annoying, mild side effects. Good results are often obtained by driving the Robinul into the skin directly with a Drionic electrophoretic machine.

hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. The sweating. Most overthe-counter antiperspirants do not control hyperhidrosis.
http://www.skinsite.com/info_hyperhidrosis.htm
Hyperhidrosis I. Definition: Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. The problem may be limited to the armpits, but often the palms and soles sweat excessively also. Excessive sweating becomes noticeable after puberty. Stressful situations such as examinations, job interviews, or an important date will aggravate the sweating. Most over-the-counter antiperspirants do not control hyperhidrosis. II. Treatment: Certain Dri is available without a prescription. You can find out where Certain Dri is sold by calling 800-338-8079. Certain Dri should be applied to dry arm pits before bed. The best control method is 20% aluminum chloride hexahydrate alcoholic solution (Drysol). It is available with a prescription. When using the medication, follow these directions:
  • Apply the medicine at bedtime to your dry armpits. To prevent irritation, wash it off in the morning with plain water. Do not use your regular daytime deodorant. Repeat the treatment nightly until the sweating is under control. Aluminum chloride may irritate your skin; if your armpits become sore or itchy, contact the office for advice. Until your excessive armpit sweating is controlled, apply aluminum chloride medicine and water to your armpits. Later, when the sweating is under control, you may try your daytime deodorant.

P almoplantar hyperhidrosis is a common condition in which the eccrine (sweat) glands of the palms and soles secrete inappropriately large quantities of sweat. The condition may become socially and professionally debilitating. Idiopathic palmoplantar hyperhidrosis begins in childhood and frequently runs in families. Eccrine glands are distributed over almost all of the body surface but are most dense in the palms and soles. These glands are morphologically and functionally normal in patients with palmoplantar hyperhidrosis. Because the hyperhidrosis is stimulated by emotion and stress, it does not occur during sleep or sedation. Conversely, normal sweating is controlled primarily by thermoregulation and, thus, occurs independently of level of consciousness. The primary defect in patients with hyperhidrosis may be hypothalamic hypersensitivity to emotional stimuli from the cerebral cortex.

Sleep Hyperhidrosis (Night sweats, excessive sweating)
Updated November 6, 1998 What is Sleep Hyperhydrosis? Sleep hyperhidrosis is profuse sweating that occurs during sleep. Symptoms:
  • Complaint of excessive sweating during sleep
  • The patient may or may not have excessive sweating during waking hours
Associated features
  • The sweating can cause an awakening because of discomfort due to wet sleepwear, and the patient may have to arise to change into another set of sleepwear.
  • Some patients may have a lifelong tendency to sweat excessively during sleep; in other patients. the disorder appears to be self-limited.
  • Age of onset: Can occur at any age, but most commonly seen in early adulthood.
Polysomnography shows: With quinizarin powder, which turns purple on contact with sweat, can be used to show affected areas to demonstrate excessive sweating during sleep. Types of excessive sweating: Primary Hyperhidrosis: This type has no known cause and is so severe and debilitating that it interfers with everyday activities, such as working, going to school, etc. This type of hyperhidrosis is sometimes treated by operating to remove the sweat glands. We are not dealing with primary hyperhidrosis on this web page. Go to www.endoscopic-surgery.com/hyperhid.htm

Almost 2.8 million Americans suffer from an excessive sweating condition known as hyperhidrosis. It is a medical condition described as sweating beyond what it is necessary to cool the body. The most common appearance of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is found on the hands. It also appears through facial sweating and blushing, on the soles of the feet, and under the arms.
While there are a number of medical treatments available, most provide only temporary relief from the socially debilitating condition. Fortunately, our surgeons have refined a minimally invasive, outpatient surgical procedure known as endoscopic thoracoscopic sympathectomy that offers patients a solution to their hyperhidrosis. This is a welcome option for people who have been suffering with this condition and the short-lived "fixes" for a lifetime.
