Hydrocephalus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Hydrocephalus ('water on the brain', in Greek) is the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain . This usually leads to raised intracranial pressure Table of contents 1 Causes 1.1 Communicating hydrocephalus

1.3 Congenital hydrocephalus
... edit
Causes
Hydrocephalus can be broadly classified as being caused by disturbance to normal production, flow or absorption of cerebrospinal fluid. The most common cause of hydrocephalus is disruption to cerebrospinal fluid circulation, which can be secondary to tumor hemorrhage infection or congenital malfomations. It can also be caused by overproduction of cerebrospinal fluid. Hydrocephalus exists in two forms:
  • communicating
    non-communicating
And can also be either:
  • congenital
    acquired
edit
Communicating hydrocephalus
Communicating hydrocephalus otherwise known as "non-obstructive hydrocephalus" is caused by inadequate absorption of cerebrospinal fluid when the ventrical pathways are not obstructed. edit
Non-communicating hydrocephalus
Non-communicating hydrocephalus, or "obstructive hydrocephalus", is caused by a blockage in the ventrical pathways through which the cerebrospinal fluid flows.

Prior to the advent of computerized axial tomography (CAT scans), the prognosis for children with hydrocephalus was generally poor. It was believed that an abbreviated life span would be plagued by numerous shunt revisions and associated complications. There was little optimism concerning physical and intellectual well-being over the course of a lifetime; patients, families and physicians were exasperated by the many problems associated with the equipment available to manage the condition.
The CAT scan has changed this situation enormously. Most patients and families can now look forward to the likelihood of normal longevity with little or no intellectual or physical impairment. To assure this, however, the neurosurgeon must be highly experienced in treating hydrocephalus and must keep continually informed of advances in the understanding the condition and its treatment.
The following discussion will center on innovations in the treatment of hydrocephalus, and the problems that must be considered by the treating physicians, families, and the community.

http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/nervous system disorders/hydrocephalus.htm
What is hydrocephalus? With hydrocephalus there is an abnormal build-up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in cavities ( the ventricles) in the brain. The resulting increased pressure on the brain causes the clinical signs that occur with this condition. Hydrocephalus can be primary (congenital ) - the animal is born with the condition, or secondary - the condition is acquired later in life due to some disease process that blocks normal drainage of the CSF. The primary form, discussed here, is seen most often in brachycephalic (dogs with a shortened head) and toy breeds. How is hydrocephalus inherited? The mode of inheritance is unknown, but there is a predisposition to this condition in the breeds listed below. What breeds are affected by hydrocephalus Toy breeds - Cairn terrier, chihuahua, Maltese, Manchester terrier, pomeranian, toy poodle, Yorkshire terrier - and brachycephalic breeds - Boston terrier, English bulldog, Lhasa apso, Pekingese, Shih tzu For many breeds and many disorders, the studies to determine the mode of inheritance or the frequency in the breed have not been carried out, or are inconclusive. We have listed breeds for which there is a consensus among those investigating in this field and among veterinary practitioners, that the condition is significant in this breed. What does hydrocephalus Puppies with severe hydrocephalus often die at a very early age due to pressure from the increased fluid in the brain. In other less severely affected pups, the signs gradually become apparent over the first few months of life, and in some mild cases the condition is only diagnosed later in life.

or Nancy Bradley (see above) Who am I ? I am a thirty-six year old woman with hydrocephalus who has been shunted since birth. I am a graduate of the University of Southern California with a B.S. in education and the mother of two healthy children. In November of 1986, I became pregnant with my first child. The pregnancy was normal with no complications but the delivery turned out to be a very difficult vaginal delivery due to the size and position (posteriorhead down, face up) of the baby. Six weeks after his birth, I had a sudden onset of shunt malfunction symptoms that lead to an emergency revision. My husband and I were convinced that the difficult delivery and the shunt malfunction six weeks later were somehow related. Because I found very little information on pregnancy and maternal hydrocephalus in the years immediately following my son’s birth, I started the database in 1994 to see how other shunted mothers had fared during their pregnancies, deliveries, and postpartum periods.
I have two healthy children, ages 11 and 3 and a rocket scientist husband.

A. CSF Circulation
Pathway: lateral ventricles, foramen of Monro, third ventricle, aqueduct of Sylvius, fourth ventricle, foramina of Magendie and Luschka; subarachnoid space over brain and spinal cord; reabsorption into venous sinus blood via arachnoid granulations.

B. Non-Communicating Hydrocephalus
Obstruction to CSF flow within ventricular system or at outlet foramina . Sites of narrowing are commonly obstructed, e.g. aqueductal stenosis.

C. Communicating Hydrocephalus
Obstruction to CSF flow in the subarachnoid space after exit from fourth ventricle. Causes include leptomeningitis (fibrosis seals subarachnoid space and obstructs CSF flow) and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

110. The Role Of Neurotrophins.....in Infantile Hydrocephalus.
Infantile hydrocephalus studies, theories and findings toward developing potential therapeutic strategies.
http://www.ufbi.ufl.edu/~coleman/project.html
BACK TO CV
Abstract The pathophysiology of infantile hydrocephalus is poorly understood and is complicated by underlying brain developmental processes. Early-onset hydrocephalus in the H-Tx rat provides an opportunity to investigate this. Neurotrophic factors play an important role in promotion of neuronal connectivity and survival and become upregulated in a variety of brain insults. Using the chick ganglion bioassay for protein levels and in situ hybridization for mRNA expression and localization, this project will study changes in forebrain neurotrophic factors at different stages of ventricular dilatation and the effect of shunt treatment on these changes. The results will enable potential therapeutic strategies to be designed for testing in animal models and eventually in humans. Hypothesis The long-term goal of this research project is to provide a scientific basis for potential therapeutic administration of appropriate neurotrophins to treat hydrocephalus. The hypotheses to be tested are that: 1. Neurotrophin levels and neurotrophin gene expression are altered by the trauma of infantile hydrocephalus. 2. Shunt treatment will affect these changes, depending on the age at the time of surgery. Through the identification and localization of specific neurotrophins affected by hydrocephalus and by shunt-treatment, a rationale will be formulated to test possible therapeutic strategies which will reduce the neurological consequences of hydrocephalus. Background and Significance

Hydrocephalus
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Hydrocephalus, also known as "water on the brain," is a condition in which there is extra cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid acts as a cushion for the brain and spinal cord, supplies nutrients and takes away waste products. Hydrocephalus occurs when there are problems with the flow or absorption of cerebrospinal fluid.

Mediante ultrasonido, Approximately 50 to 60 percent of these fetuses have an associated CNS abnormality, with myelomeningocele composing 30 percent of this group. Sonographically, the hydrocephalus may be obscured on the side of the head closest to the ultrasound transducer and more obvious in the hemisphere distant from the transducer. This is known as an artifact. The prognosis of a fetus with hydrocephaly depends primarily on the presence and severity of associated abnormalities. Morbidity increases with the presence of abnormalities outside the CNS, and neurological prognosis depends on the presence of associated CNS abnormalities. Extensive counseling and amniocentesis are recommended in all cases of fetal hydrocephaly.
