Adult hydrocephalus is an important condition often neglected. This group treats patients with hydrocephalus of all kinds including idiopathic and normal pressure hydrocephalus.  Dr. Peter Black is wll known for his clinical and research work for patients with hydrocephalus. During the past five years he and his team have participated in a national research project testing a programmable shunt valve and its use in the management of hydrocephalus. The pressure on the programmable shunt can be increased or decreased without additional surgery.  Presently volumetric imaging has been added.
This group also specializes in the care of patients thought to have idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. Utilizing standard and investigational diagnostic testing, patients are evaluated to assess whether a shunt placement would be helpful.
Please contact Nancy Olsen-Bailey, R.N. or Donna Dello-Iacono at (617)732-6826 for more information. To schedule an appointment call (617)732-6810.

    Kori 1997
I wanted to create a place for loved ones to come and learn a little more about hydrocephalus. My oldest daughter, Kori, has hydrocephalus. She is now 5 years old. She was diagnosed when I took her in for her 2-month well baby check-up. She was shunted the following morning at The Children's Hospital, in Denver, Colorado. When she was an infant, I would have given anything to know what to expect from her as she grew up. Nobody told us that she may be developmentally delayed or that she would be at risk for learning disabilities. I have learned so much in the past few years, that I would hope that I could help somebody else. Above all, I just want everybody to know that Hydrocephalus is not a death sentence. Children are amazingly resilient, and with a lot of love, patience, and hard work, children with hydrocephalus can grow to achieve great things! So, sit back, check out my links to other hydrocephalus sites, read Kori's story, but most of all check out the links to the personal web pages. Upon them you will meet some amazing children! Don't forget to sign my guest book! Thanks!!!!!!!!!
These were both taken when she was 2 mos old. This is how she looked 5 days before she had her

Diving With Hydrocephalus and Shunt Diving with hydrocephalus can be accomplished if several aspects of the problem are taken into account: 1. The extent of neurological disability; how much numbness of your extremities and whether or not there is any "autonomic" instability. This means things like postural hypotension, blood pressure changes and ability to react to cold water immersion. 2. All of the neurological deficits should be carefully documented so that a diving physician will have this information available in case of an accident. 3. If there is good circulation, a shunt should not be a problem since there is no air involved and there should be no pressure differentials from the changes in pressures of diving. 4. If there is an open wound you must be aware of the increased risk of infection from pathogens in the seawater. Dr. Nick McIver

Melissa's Journey
A Story of Hope and Courage.
This page is to introduce you to my daughter Melissa,
she is 18 years old and a junior at our local High School.
She likes music, videos and she loves little children
especially babies. She dreams of the day she will become
a mother. This all sounds pretty normal I guess but
the part of her life that we want people to know about and
possibly help with is she has also had 40 shunt revisions
for a condition she has called hydrocephalus
She also has cerebral palsy, a seizure disorder,
and is developmentally delayed. Melissa has not been one of the lucky ones that normal medical treatment works for, no one understands exactly why (and we have been to many doctors, some of the best in the east). Melissa's joumey started at birth when she was born 8 weeks too soon, she developed spinal meningitis at birth and because of the meningitis and respiratory distress she was suffering she developed seizures at 3 days old. Her first 6 weeks of life were spend in the neonatal intensive care unit as we all waited and prayed she would continue to survive another day. In those first weeks we had no idea what we were up against and all we wanted was to be able to have our beautiful daughter live. We would deal with whatever else we had to as time went on. She was able to leave the hospital when she was six weeks old but we only had her home for three days before we found out she would be going back four days later to have a shunt placed to treat the hydrocephalus that had began before she was even discarded from the hospital.

93. Fetal Hydrocephalus, Children's Hospital
This condition is called hydrocephalus. Traditionally, hydrocephalus is detected and treated after birth with a shunting procedure.
http://fetalsurgery.chop.edu/HYDRint7.shtml
Fetal Hydrocephalus
Developmentally, the brain starts out as a tubular structure. As the brain grows, the inner tube remains as a series of interconnected cavities termed ventricles. Cerebral spinal fluid is produced by the choroid plexus within the ventricles starting at sixth week of gestation. By the neonatal period, approximately 300-500 cc of CSF is produced per day. The CSF flows through a series of foramens in the brain and out into the subarachnoid space where it is reabsorbed by the venous system. CSF production continues despite high pressure states. Consequently, if the CSF pathways are obstructed or obliterated by a variety of developmental or acquired abnormalities, CSF accumulates under pressure within the ventricular system. The ventricles begin to dilate with thinning and stretching of the cerebral mantle. This condition is called hydrocephalus. To a certain extent, brain compliance can accommodate the ventricular dilatation without significant neuronal loss. As the process continues, however, irreversible brain damage inevitably occurs. Hydrocephalus is one of the most common congenital anomalies affecting the nervous system, occurring with an incidence of 0.3-2.5/1000 live births. Traditionally, hydrocephalus is detected and treated after birth with a shunting procedure. With the advent of prenatal high quality ultrasonography, ventricular enlargement is now routinely diagnosed in utero. This knowledge has facilitated obstetric care, but presents a source of uncertainty for the family and a challenge for the team counseling parents regarding their fetus.

I dedicate my website to Doctor John Parker Mickle, Adjunct Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Research Faculty, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, and my daughter, Gina Marie. The following "categories" of information was provided to me in 1978. It was the only information I had available to read while I waited through the initial shunt surgery of my two-week old daughter. I have referenced that information throughout this website and add links to information and resources I find. It is hoped that the more information I can provide, will give insight to VP Shunt recipients and their families. GET INFORMED!

yes no Hydrocephalus is commonly, but inaccurately, known as 'water on the brain.' A watery fluid known as Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF) flows through narrow passageways in the brain from one ventricle to the next, out over the inside of the brain and down the spinal cord. CSF is continuously absorbed into the blood stream and the amount of pressure is kept within a narrow range. If the flow of fluid is obstructed at any point, it accumulates in the ventricles causing them to enlarge and compress surrounding brain tissue. In babies - but not older children or adults - the head will enlarge. Treatment may be by insertion of a 'shunt' to redirect the excess CSF or, in some cases, by a third ventriculostomy. This will entail a hole being made in the floor of the 3rd ventricle to allow CSF flow. Symptoms caused by raised pressure usually improve, but other signs of brain damage may remain. These can include subtle learning difficulties. Shunts can become blocked leading to headache, nausea, photophobia, inertia and irritability. Chronic infection may cause gradual deterioration in overall performance. Medical advice should be sought in cases of mental or physical deterioration in those with shunts, or if a shunt blockage is suspected.

Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus can be caused by a variety of reasons. Congenital hydrocephalus is hydrocephalus that is present at birth. Some types of congenital hydrocephalus include aqueductal stenosis or spina bifida. Acquired hydrocephalus is hydrocephalus that develops after birth. Some causes of acquired hydrocephalus include intraventricular hemorrhage, meningitis, head trauma, and brain tumors. Hydrocephalus can be diagnosed with ultrasound, CT, or MRI. A spinal fluid shunt system consists of flexible tubing made of synthetic material which has a one way valve that empties into another part of the body, usually the abdomen. This is called a Ventriculo-Peritoneal (V-P) Shunt. Your doctor may have chosen to place a Tele-sensor within the tubing of the shunt. The Tele-sensor allows your doctor or nurse to monitor the pressure inside the ventricles. Your child will probably have incisions on his head and abdomen. The incisions are closed with either paper tapes, dissolvable stitches, or nylon stitches. The nylon stitches will be removed at your follow-up appointment.

Hydrocephalus
