SBH Queensland
Welcome to the site of SBH Queensland, the main provider of services to the spina bifida and hydrocephalus communities in Queensland, Australia. Where is Queensland? If you are returning to this site looking for information on spina bifida, hydrocephalus or any similar conditions and their treatment, you will notice that all of the information has gone. It has been updated, added to and generally improved and moved to the Australian site - The Australian Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association (ASBHA) If you want to know more about spina bifida and hydrocephalus please take the time to have a good look around this site. You will probably learn a lot from it. In future the information on the ASBHA site and the URL, spinabifida.org will be taken over by the International Federation for Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida and used as part of their planned Knowledge Centre. This site is maintained by Bill Shead, the Information Officer for SBH Queensland. To ask a question (after visiting the ASBHA site first, please), make a comment or let me know about problems with this website please email me . This is only a temporary site and I hope to do a lot more with it early in 2004.

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the primary characteristic is excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain. It may be congenital or acquired. Congenital hydrocephalus is present at birth and may be caused by either environmental influences or genetic predisposition. Acquired hydrocephalus develops at the time of birth or at some point afterward. Acquired hydrocephalus can affect individuals of all ages and may be caused by injury or disease. Hydrocephalus is most often treated with the surgical placement of a shunt system.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is formed in a region of the brain known as the choroid plexus. CSF usually circulates through channels of the brain known as ventricles, as well as flowing around the outside of the brain and through the spinal canal.
When the circulation or absorption of this fluid is blocked, or excessive fluid is produced, the volume of fluid in the brain becomes higher than normal. The accumulation of fluid puts pressure on the brain, forcing it against the skull and damaging or destroying the tissues.
Symptoms vary depending on the cause of the obstruction to CSF circulation, the age at which the problem develops, and the extent of damage to brain tissue caused by the swelling.

Congenital hydrocephalus... can be traced to a birth defect or brain malformation
In 1983, at the age of 13, I acquired hydrocephalus when I was hit in the head by a baseball. It was a freak accident.
The term "communicating hydrocephalus" means that the site of increased resistance to CSF drainage resides outside of the ventricular system in the subarachnoid space.
Non-communicating, or obstructive, hydrocephalus is caused when there is an obstruction in the flow of CSF within the ventricular system of the brain.
Hydrocephalus is often associated with Dandy-Walker syndrome, neural tube defects, and spinal bifida.
CSF is constantly being produced, flowing through, bathing, protecting, and cleansing the structures of your brain....
To communicate effectively with neurosurgeons, patients who have hydrocephalus need to become familiar with the basic structures of the brain. The effect that hydrocephalus has on an area of the body greatly depends on where the blockage or abnormal accumulation of CSF is located. Hydrocephalus occurs when there is an obstruction of one of the ventricles or ventricular foramina (CSF passageways) that restricts the flow of CSF

hydrocephalus. In some babies born with hydrocephalus the condition is arrested if the blocked passage opens or the fluid is channelled elsewhere.
http://www.spinabifida.org/hydrocephalus.htm
HYDROCEPHALUS A clear, saltwater-like liquid called cerebrospinal fluid surrounds the brain. This fluid protects and nourishes the brain, carries away wastes from brain cells and contains important chemicals and nutrients. Each day the brain produces about a pint of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which flows in a continuous circuit through the brain cavities (ventricles) and over the surface of the brain and spinal cord until it is absorbed by the body. In approximately 90 percent of people with spina bifida, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid is obstructed. A blockage at the base of the brain results in a build up of fluid in the ventricles of the brain, which then expand and push against brain tissue and the bones of the skull. In an infant the plates of the skull are not yet fused together. This enables the plates to shift and accommodate the excess cerebrospinal fluid and thus lessen the amount of damage to the brain. In some babies born with hydrocephalus the condition is arrested if the blocked passage opens or the fluid is channelled elsewhere. If it continues to develop there is continuing pressure on the brain, which if untreated will cause brain damage. Hydrocephalus is usually treated by insertion of a shunt. A shunt is a device which is designed to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and carry it to other parts of the body. A one-way valve is used, which usually sits outside the skull, but beneath the skin, somewhere behind the ear. (

Prior to the advent of computerized axial tomography (CAT scans), the prognosis for children with hydrocephalus was generally poor. It was believed that an abbreviated life span would be plagued by numerous shunt revisions and associated complications. There was little optimism concerning physical and intellectual well-being over the course of a lifetime; patients, families and physicians were exasperated by the many problems associated with the equipment available to manage the condition.
The CAT scan has changed this situation enormously. Most patients and families can now look forward to the likelihood of normal longevity with little or no intellectual or physical impairment. To assure this, however, the neurosurgeon must be highly experienced in treating hydrocephalus and must keep continually informed of advances in the understanding the condition and its treatment.
The following discussion will center on innovations in the treatment of hydrocephalus, and the problems that must be considered by the treating physicians, families, and the community.

Over drainage of the ventricles can result in collapse of the brain away from the inner surface of the skull with a resultant risk of bleeding with compression of the brain. Long term, over drainage can result in headaches of a very debilitating degree. Consequently, several design modifications of the pressure differential valve have been developed. First, an anti-siphoning device was developed to be added to the standard shunt just below the shunt's reservoir. This device is responsive to atmospheric pressure as transmitted through the skin. When the pressure within the fluid column of the shunt drops to below atmospheric pressure (as is the case with siphoning), atmospheric pressure transmitted through the skin pushes a diaphragm down to close the fluid passage way and block further flow of CSF through the system until such time as the pressure within the ventricles climbs back to above atmospheric pressure. When this occurs, the diaphragm is pushed back open. A variation on this is the
