I took my cat to the vet and he thinks he might have Horner's Syndrome. His pupil is dilated, he can't walk without falling over, his head stays cocked to the left and is very wobbly. He gave him two strong antibiotic shots and liquid antibiotic 2 days ago. He has not gotten any better at all. How long does it take for symptoms to start subsiding. Last changed: September 24, 1999

My 9 month old Golden was just diagnosed with Horner's. He is suggsting that we wait a week or so before doing blood tests of x-rays. I can't figure out why he has this. We don't use a choke collar and he has only been on a leash a few time and doesn't pull (mostly jumps). Could he have hurt his neck playing? Is there anything I can do? He just had surgery at 5 month for severe OC. He is on Rimadyl (sp?). Could this be a side effect? Should I see a Cert. Vet. Oppthal.? Any info would be appreciated. Last changed: September 24, 1999

Causes and Risks There are many potential causes of Horner's syndrome. Any interruption of the sympathetic nerve fibers which start in the hypothalamus (a central brain region) and run via the upper spinal cord near the carotid artery and to the face may lead to Horner's syndrome. Such injuries can result from a stroke in the brainstem, injury to the carotid artery, a tumour in the upper lobe of the lung and cluster headaches. Rarely, Horner's syndrome may be congenital (present at birth) and associated with a lack of pigmentation of the iris. Eye drops and certain medications may also lead to this condition. Ency. home

horner s syndrome. The Question My vet told me that my cat had horner s syndrome. Can you tell me exactly what this is and if there is a treatment for it?

Horner's Syndrome
The Question: My vet told me that my cat had Horner's Syndrome. Can you tell me exactly what this is and if there is a treatment for it? It only affects her one eye and I was curious about the long term effects of this disease. Thank You, M. Perrus The Answer Horner's syndrome is an abnormality in the nerve signals of the eye resulting in one or more of the following signs: miosis, prolapse of the third eyelid, ptosis, and enopthalmus. In other words the eye looks smaller, the third eyelid is often covering half of it and the pupil is constricted. It usually occurs on one side, but can be bilateral. You can use drugs which affect the sympathetic nerve pathways and see if they will override the affect to see if you indeed have Horner's syndrome. There are a variety of causes for Horner's syndrometrauma to the nerves innervationg the eye being the most common. Viruses, masses placing pressure on the nerves, anything causing inflammation of the nerves can cause Horner's syndrome. Horner's syndrome itself is not life threatening and is treated by treating the underlying cause. (reduce swelling from trauma, remove mass etc. ) I would imagine your cat has been diagnosed with some other problem and when this is cured the Horner's syndrome will go away.
