Hodgkin's Disease Fact Sheet
Hodgkin's Disease is a type of Cancer that begins in the lymphatic tissue. The lymphatic system is a connected network of lymph vessels (similar to blood vessels), lymph nodes, and other structures including the spleen, thymus, and bone marrow. Lymph nodes are small, bean shaped structures that form and store white blood cells to fight infection ... more
Hodgkin's Disease Treatment Options

Treatment options for Hodgkin's Disease (like all cancers) can vary with the stage of development that the disease is in. Radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy are almost always a part of the treatment plan. Bone marrow transplants are also now being included as part of the treatment plan for certain cases ... more

62. A Hodgkin S Disease Experience
I am a Hodgkin s disease patient who has relapsedtwice and is currently awaiting a BMT.
http://www-scf.usc.edu/~jmcdermo/hodgkins/symptoms.html
T he most common symptom of Hodgkin's Disease is a painless swelling of one or more lymph nodes. This swelling is obvious in the neck and underarm sites. This swelling is much more difficult to detect when the thoracic nodes are swollen. In my case these nodes had swollen from the normal bean-sized 0.5cm to a whopping 10cm x 5cm. This large body of swollen lymph nodes in the chest is called a mediastinal mass and is common in newly diagnosed patients. Other symptoms include one or more of the following:
  • drenching night sweats
  • unexplained weight loss or weight gain
  • fevers and chills
  • discomfort after alcohol
  • fatique or pain
  • itching The presence of one or more of these symptoms weighs in the staging of the disease.
My symptoms: from itching to "you have cancer!"
    Diagnosis
Diagnosis for Hodgkin's is pretty uniform in the US and elsewhere. When a patient presents with symptoms a series of scans are performed. The most common types of scan are Computerized Tomography Scan (CT or CAT-scans) and/or Magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) These scans are initially performed for the chest abdomen and pelvis. Usually in the case of HD a

    http://www.med.utah.edu/healthinfo/adult/Hemat/hodgkins.htm
What is the lymphatic system? The lymphatic system is part of the immune system, whose function is to fight disease and infections. The lymphatic system includes: lymph - fluid in which the lymphocyte cells are suspended. lymph vessels - thin tubes that carry lymph fluid throughout the body. lymphocytes - cells that fight infection and disease. lymph nodes - bean-shaped organs, found in the underarm, groin, neck, and abdomen, that act as filters for the lymph fluid as it passes through them. Hodgkin's Disease What is Hodgkin's disease?
Hodgkin's disease is a type of lymphoma, a cancer in the lymphatic system. It is a rare disease, accounting for less than 1 percent of all cases of cancer in the US, and occurs most often in people between the ages of 15 and 34, and in people over age 55. Hodgkin's disease causes the cells in the lymphatic system to abnormally reproduce, eventually making the body less able to fight infection. Hodgkin's disease cells can also spread to other organs. What are the symptoms of Hodgkin's disease
The following are the most common symptoms of Hodgkin's disease . However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

Signs and Symptoms Hodgkin's disease occurs in three distinct forms:
    • Childhood, 14 years of age and younger Young adult, 15 to 34 years of age Older adult, 55 to 75 years of age
Hodgkin's disease peaks in young adults and again in those over 50 years of age. It is slightly more common in males than females, and is more common in Caucasians. This disease is very rare in children younger than 5 and tends to cluster in families. The main malignant cell of Hodgkin's lymphoma is the "Reed-Sternberg" cell that originates from B or T cells, cells that contain antibody molecules. Several types of Hodgkin's disease also are associated with the Epstein-Barr virus, a member of the herpes virus family and one of the most common human viruses. Four types of Hodgkin's disease are:
    • Nodular Sclerosing This accounts for about 40 percent of all Hodgkin's disease and for 70 percent of the Hodgkin's cases in adolescents. This is the only form of Hodgkin's that is more prevalent in women. It can involve the lower cervical lymph nodes.

Symposium Description Dr. John Ultmann was a pioneer in the treatment of lymphoma and devoted his life to the understanding of this disease. This symposium has been organized to honor his achievements and to look ahead to what our increased understanding of both Hodgkin's Disease and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma will mean to the development of new treatment strategies for the care of these patients. Our distinguished faculty will discuss changes in the treatment of Hodgkin's Disease and new insights into the biology of this disease. We will also discuss the development of new antibody and vaccine therapies and the impact of these therapies on treatment options for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. New treatment approaches for diseases such as mantle cell and high grade lymphomas will be presented. This symposium has been designed for medical and radiation oncologists and will provide an update on findings from recent lymphoma trials, define the current standard of care in treatment, and provide data on new therapies.

    What is Hodgkin's disease?
Hodgkin's disease, first described by Dr Thomas Hodgkin in 1832, is a cancer which affects the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is the body's natural defence against infection. It is made up of a network of lymph glands (nodes) which are situated throughout the body in the neck, armpits, chest, abdomen and groin. Tiny lymph vessels connect the glands. The tonsils and the spleen (which breaks down old blood cells), are also part of the lymphatic system. A diagram showing the main groups of lymph nodes in the body (d) back to top

    DESCRIPTION
    What is Hodgkin's disease?
Hodgkin's disease is a type of lymphoma. Lymphomas are cancers that develop in the lymph system, part of the body's immune system. The lymph system is made up of thin tubes that branch, like blood vessels, into all parts of the body. Lymph vessels carry lymph, a colorless, watery fluid that contains white blood cells called lymphocytes. Along the network of vessels are groups of small, bean-shaped organs called lymph nodes. Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the underarm, pelvis, neck, chest, and abdomen. The lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting cells. The spleen (an organ in the upper abdomen that makes lymphocytes and filters old blood cells from the blood), the thymus (a small organ beneath the breastbone), and the tonsils (lymph tissue in the throat) are also part of the lymph system.

Feedback Form A DULT H ODGKIN'S D ISEASE Hodgkin's Disease Overview Hodgkin's Disease, often referred to as Hodgkin's Lymphoma, is a malignancy that starts in lymphatic tissue and may move into other parts of the body including the testes, lung, and bone marrow. Other lymphomas are classified as Non-Hodgkin's and occur more frequently than Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Hodgkin's Lymphoma is differentiated for the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells in the area of malignancy. This cell, and other forms of it, are specific to Hodgkin's Disease. Because of the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells, cancer cells in Hodgkin's disease look different under a microscope than cells of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and other cancers. Reed-Sternberg cells are believed to be a form of malignant B-lymphocyte. Normal B- lymphocytes are the cells that make antibodies that help fight infections. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) appears to be a factor in about 40-50% of Hodgkin's patients. Other recent studies also show that Interleukin-13, a natural cytokine in the body, may be produced rapidly by malignant Hodgkin's cells. The cause of Hodgkin's disease has not yet been found and is currently being researched.

It is slightly more frequent in men than in women, and is more commonly seen in the third decade of life, after age 50. This disease is caused by overproduction of lymphoid cells . Hodgkin's Disease is highly curable, even in advanced stages. Causes: The cause of this illness is unknown in the majority of patients. Certain viruses like EBV or HIV have been linked to causation of Hodgkin's Disease.. Signs and Symptoms Patients may not show any signs for sometime. As the disease progresses, it can cause any of the following problems: Diagnosis The diagnosis is made by taking a biopsy of an enlarged lymph node or involved organ of the body. Evaluation of bone marrow under microscope may also lead to this diagnosis. Staging Refers to the extent of the disease and is a very good guideline as to the treatment plans and outcome of the disease. The extent of the disease can be established by physical examination
