Varroa-Tolerant Bees Keep Hives Buzzing
An eight-legged, blood-sucking parasite known as the varroa mite ranks as one of the worst enemies of honey bees worldwide. About one-sixteenth inch in size, Varroa jacobsoni mites have attacked in nearly every state, killing bees needed for making honey and for pollinating an estimated $8 to $10 billion worth of crops. Varroa mites feed on the blood of adult bees and developing young bees that are still soft, white pupae. Parasitized bees may have deformed wings and abdomens and a shorter life span than their unparasitized hivemates. What's more, varroa mites are thought to transmit at least a half-dozen bee viruses. But honey bees that can tolerate attack by the mite may hold an important key to stopping today's devastating losses to this parasite. ARS entomologist Eric H. Erickson and colleagues monitored mite infestations in research apiaries. The scientists populated the apiaries with survivors from hives that had not been treated with mite-controlling chemicals, or miticides. "We rated a hive as varroa-tolerant if it had no more than 15 mites for every 100 adult bees," says Erickson, who heads the ARS Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Tucson, Arizona. "Our experimental apiaries, which we kept miticide-free, usually scored better than this, often having fewer than 7 mites per 100 bees."

Hives (Urticaria)

These lectures are not meant to replace your physician and are simply provided as a free educational service to all our visitors. If you feel that you have a skin problem, please see your doctor. Urticaria is a common skin disorder that is characterized by the spontaneous development of swollen pink or red itching areas called "hives", "whelps", or "wheels". These are produced by the leakage of a liquid portion of the blood through the walls of tiny blood vessels into the skin or mucous membranes of the body. Urticaria usually comes on abruptly, with large numbers of "hives" in repetitive crops. A "hive" can be a few inches to several inches in size and when individual "hives" join together they can even cover an entire body area. An individual "hive", from a particular crop, will usually disappear after a few minutes to several hours without leaving any permanent changes in the skin. Typically, most individuals, have a single attack of urticaria that lasts only briefly - for several days. This is referred to as ACUTE URTICARIA. Unfortunately, some cases of urticaria may also persist and "come and go" with attacks being intermittent or continual for years. When urticaria lasts more than three months, we refer to that type as CHRONIC URTICARIA.

hives. What are hives? hives (urticaria) are raised, red, itchy areas on the skin(also called wheals or welts) that appear as an allergic skin reaction.
http://scc.uchicago.edu/hives.htm
Hives What are hives?
Hives (urticaria) are raised, red, itchy areas on the skin (also called wheals or welts) that appear as an allergic skin reaction. There can be one or many hives that vary in size and shape. How does it occur?
Most often, no cause for hives can be identified. Clusters of hives may appear as an allergic reaction to one or more factors (irritants) such as foods, medications, insect bites or stings, infections, or emotional stress. Histamine, a body chemical, is released in response to the irritant that causes the hives to form. These hives or wheals may appear on any part of the body, but are most common on the arms, legs, and trunk. The rash may last for a few minutes or several days. It may recur and can be uncomfortable. In the case of a severe reaction to a bee sting, for example, your face and throat may swell. Hives may rarely cause problems with breathing, creating the danger of suffocation. How is it diagnosed?
Your doctor will examine the affected area and will ask about your history of sensitivity to such things as: • foods (commonly eggs, shellfish, milk, nuts, berries, dyes or other additives)

What are hives? Hives are red, raised, swollen areas on the skin that are very itchy. They can appear on any part of the body, may come and go, and usually last from a few hours to a few days, but can stay for weeks or even months in some cases. What causes hives? The most common cause of hives in young children is a viral infection such as a cold or stomach virus. Otherwise, they may be the result of an allergic reaction to something your baby has been exposed to (though often you won't be able to identify the cause). About 10 to 15 percent of infants will have hives at some point in their early childhood years. Here are some common causes: food allergens that cause hives are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (such as cashews and pecans), soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish. Babies who have developed an allergy to cats may also breakout in hives when they touch the kitty.

Definition
Hives is an allergic skin reaction causing localized redness, swelling, and itching
Description
Hives is a reaction of the body's immune system that causes areas of the skin to swell, itch, and become reddened (wheals). When the reaction is limited to small areas of the skin, it is called "urticaria." Involvement of larger areas, such as whole sections of a limb, is called "angioedema."
Causes and symptoms
Causes Hives is an allergic reaction. The body's immune system is normally responsible for protection from foreign invaders. When it becomes sensitized to normally harmless substances, the resulting reaction is called an allergy. An attack of hives is set off when such a substance, called an allergen, is ingested, inhaled, or otherwise contacted. It interacts with immune cells called mast cells, which reside in the skin, airways, and digestive system. When mast cells encounter an allergen, they release histamine and other chemicals, both locally and into the bloodstream. These chemicals cause blood vessels to become more porous, allowing fluid to accumulate in tissue and leading to the swollen and reddish appearance of hives. Some of the chemicals released sensitize pain nerve endings, causing the affected area to become itchy and sensitive.

Top of Page Bees live in colonies, often with several hundred bees sharing the same hive or nest. The hive is usually built in the ground, in trees, or even buildings. Worker bees collect pollen and nector from flowers which are used to create wax to build the hive. The queen bee creates the wax in her abdomen, which she uses to build chambers or cells where she lays her eggs. In the process of building their hive, bees play a very important role pollinating flowers and plants. As a bee gathers nectar from a flower, tiny grains of pollen will stick to its hairy legs and body. When the bee flies to another flower for nector, the pollen on its legs and body brushes off to help furtilize the flower.

11.15 Urticaria (Hives)
Presentation
The patient is generally very uncomfortable, with intense itching. There may be a history of similar episodes and perhaps a known precipitating agent (bee sting, food, or drug). Most commonly the patient will only have a rash. Sometimes this is accompanied by edematous swelling of the lips, face and/or hands (angioedema). In the more severe cases, patients may have wheezing, laryngeal edema and/or frank cardiovascular collapse (anaphylaxis). The urticarial rash consists of sharply defined, slightly raised wheals surrounded by erythema and tending to be circular or serpiginous. Each eruption is transient, lasting no more than 8-12 hours, but it may be replaced by new lesions in different locations.
What to do:
  • Attempt to elicit a precipitating cause, including drugs, foods, stress, or an underlying infection or illness, (e.g., collagen vascular disease, malignancy, or, when accompanied by arthralgias, anicteric hepatitis).
  • For immediate relief of severe pruritis, you can try 0.3cc of epinephrine (1:1000) subcutaneously, but this wears off quickly, and adds a number of side effects the patient may find worse than the itching: tachycardia, shaking, dry mouth, wet palms, hypertension, and even angina and myocardial infarction.

Urticaria
The diagnostic challenge of hives Richard J. Sveum, MD VOL 100 / NO 2 / AUGUST 1996 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE This is the second of five articles on allergy Preview : Patients who present with hives are often hoping their physician can tell them what caused the condition. In acute cases, that is often possible, but unfortunately, the majority of chronic cases are idiopathic. In this article, Dr Sveum puts the spotlight on urticaria. He stresses the importance of taking a careful medical history and describes treatment options. U rticaria is part of a more severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, in which hypotension or respiratory distress can be present. When a patient presents with flaring or reddened skin and wheals, prompt evaluation is needed. Once the physician is sure anaphylaxis is not occurring, the next step is to proceed with careful history taking. Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a vascular reaction in the upper dermis, marked by the development of wheals on virtually any area of the body. Acute urticaria is defined as hives that last for less than 6 weeks (1); when the hives last for more than 6 weeks, however, the condition is considered chronic. Chronic urticaria can be particularly frustrating to diagnose and treat, since most cases are idiopathic. Fortunately, the condition can often be controlled with appropriate medical management.

http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/hlthconn/items/hives.htm
Hives Hives , or wheals , are raised red itchy bumps that develop on the skin. Hives often occur as a result of allergies or insect bites (see Insect Stings for more information), but sometimes the cause is not clear. Common triggers for hives:
  • foods such as shellfish, milk, eggs, strawberries, nuts or food additives
  • drugs such as penicillin, sulfa drugs, aspirin, codeine or anti-inflammatory medications
  • handling certain plants or being in contact with animal hair
  • occasionally, pollens, molds or dust can cause the problem
  • heat, cold, sunlight
  • minor traumas such as pressure from chair seats or hand clapping may cause hives in some people
  • hives may also appear around the site of a scrape or scratch and then fade within 10-15 minutes
  • emotional or physical stress
  • new clothing that hasen't been washed
  • new soap or skin care products
  • viruses.
Hives can occur almost anywhere on the body. They tend to occur within 1/2 to 2 hours after being exposed to the trigger.
If hives are accompanied by swelling (especially around the mouth and face), shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, wheezing, or a feeling of tightness in your chest or throat, you need immediate medical attention. Dial 911 or have someone take you to the emergency department immediately.
