What Are the Symptoms of Hives?
Usually you can identify hives right away because of the pale bumps often surrounded by reddened skin that start forming on your skin. In most cases they will itch, but some hives may also burn or sting. They can appear on any part of your body and last from minutes to hours to days. Some people get hives immediately after eating a food that triggers their hives, but for others, hives don't appear until a couple of hours after eating the food. Hives also come in different sizes and shapes. Sometimes they can even look like rings. What Will the Doctor Do?
Don't be afraid to go to the doctor for your hives. Usually doctors don't need to do any special tests to tell if you have hives - just looking at them or hearing your story of what they looked like is usually enough to make the diagnosis. Mostly, the doctor will ask you questions about what you do during the day, what you eat, and possible allergies you may have to figure out what might be causing the hives and what to do about them. In many cases, hives clear up on their own without any medication or doctor visits. Sometimes, doctors will prescribe an over-the-counter or prescription antihistamine medicine to help clear up your hives.

Help with Hives
By Christine Haran
Some people break out in hives whenever they share a room with a cat. Others find themselves covered in these itchy red bumps when they're feeling stressed. While stress-induced hives usually resolve on their own, other types of hives require treatment that can range from antihistamines to oral steroids. Most of the time hives are short term, but some people suffer from chronic hives that can last for years, leading to problems such as sleep loss and depression. Hives are part of an allergic reaction that occurs when a chemical called histamine is released by cells in the body called mast cells. The release of histamine can be triggered in response to a variety of stimuli, including certain foods, medication or even heat or cold. In some cases, chronic hives may be a sign of an underlying disease condition. In others, it can very difficult for an allergist-immunologist to figure out the cause of hives.

Jon's homepage Wednesday, February 06, 2002 Hives, swarming, scale, and connectedness When a beehive gets to critical mass, it makes a new queen, and then a bunch of the bees swarm off to create their own hive. (Although irrelevant to my point here, it is a strange fact, according to Richard Dawkins' remarkable 1996 book, River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life , that the old queen, and not the new one, travels with the swarm.) Parallels exist in human societies. There is, for example, a notion that the maximum size of a productive working community of humans is in the low hundreds. When a company grows larger than that, swarming often occurs and can be beneficial even if the new hive is just another building in the same office park. In a discussion of reputation management, Bill Seitz notes: Scaling such a system is the big challenge. CPAN is small enough to gather ratings info or comments about. But to try and do so for UseNet postings becomes really really hard. He adds: The big meta-problem I see with reputation management is aggregating karma across sites/markets.

Links John's Beekeeping Notebook Observation Bee Hives Observation hives can tell us a lot about what is happening in the bee yard. They tell us whether there is a nectar flow and what is happening with brood-rearing. I have enjoyed working with several types of observation bee hives. The experimenting was fun, and I learned a lot about bees! This page features movable frame hives. The next page features natural comb hives and design suggestions. Movable Frame Observation Bee Hives Movable frame hives allow a beekeeper to examine and replace comb, and to medicate bees. Here are a few designs that I have used: A Six-frame Hive This hive has viewing surfaces on two sides, and is two combs wide. The hive is thin enough that brood is usually seen on the outside combs. The queen is occasionally seen laying eggs on the outside combs during the daytime, but she is often hidden from view. Hives with only a single comb width are great for a temporary display, but very stressful on bees. Double or triple comb width hives allow the bees better temperature control.

Home Observation Hives Cell-plug Queen Rearing Beekeeping History ... Overseas Beekeeping [ Top Bar Hives ] Links John's Beekeeping Notebook Top Bar Hive Beekeeping One of the great things about beekeeping is the many ways that bees can be housed. The Kenya-style "top bar" hive is a lower cost alternative to the standard movable-frame hive, but produces less honey. I experimented with top bar hives in the early 1980's, and then used them when serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Fiji. I still occasionally maintain one or two Kenya-style top bar hives. My friend Petero (right) inspects a hive by removing one top-bar to give some working room, then lifts each comb to check colony development and condition. Each comb is returned to the hive in the proper order. The Kenya top bar hive has been used extensively in development work because it is easy to build and its relatively low cost. Ordinary lumber will do nicely. This hive design is often practical for small-farmers in developing countries. The entrance is best built on the end of the hive, not the middle of the side as shown left. Bees tend to build their brood nest near the entrance, so an entrance at the end allows a beekeeper to harvest honey from the opposite end. No queen excluder needed!

Urticaria
Urticaria, commonly known as hives, usually strikes suddenly. First the skin itches, then it erupts into red welts. The itching may be severe, keeping people from working or sleeping. It's a distressing disorder which affects an estimated 20 percent of the population at one time or another in their lives. What is urticaria?
Most cases of urticaria are acute, lasting from a few hours to less than six weeks. Some cases are chronic, lasting more than six weeks. The welts may appear in one place, disappear after a short time, then erupt at another spot, then another. They are made worse by scratching. Each individual hive lasts no more than 24 hours. What kinds of things can trigger attacks of urticaria?
Bouts of urticaria have been traced to such triggers as infections, drugs (including aspirin), certain foods and additives, cold, sun exposure, insect stings, alcohol, exercise, endocrine disorders and emotional stress. In some people, pressure caused by belts and constricting clothing causes eruption. Urticaria may be a response to infection including the common cold, strep throat and infectious mononucleosis. In the urticaria-prone person, these triggers cause the body to release chemical mediators, including histamine, from cells. Histamine (which causes itchy, runny noses and watery eyes in hay fever sufferers) dilates the walls of blood vessels, allowing fluids to leak out into the surrounding tissues. Swelling and itching are the result.
