can be quite uncomfortable. I remember getting hives after being stung by a jellyfish, and I couldn't sleep without Benadryl for several nights. I also discovered that distraction can sometimes help with the itching. This is one situation where videos and kid’s cassettes might be a real boon. And don’t forget to add an extra hug or two. What is it?

Urticaria - Hives Hives , or "wheals", are pale red swellings of skin that occur in groups on any part of the skin. Urticaria is the medical word for hives. Each hive lasts a few hours before fading without a trace. New areas may develop as old areas fade. They can vary in size from as small as a pencil eraser to as large as a dinner plate and may join together to form larger swellings. Hives usually are itchy, but may also burn or sting. Hives are formed by blood plasma leaking out of small blood vessels in the skin. This is caused by the release of a chemical called histamine. Histamine is released from cells called "mast cells" that lie along the blood vessels in the skin. Allergic reactions, chemicals in foods, or medications can cause histamine release. Sometimes it's impossible to find out why hives are forming. Hives are very common - 10-20 percent of the population will have at least one episode in their lifetime. Most episodes of hives disappear quickly in a few days to a few weeks. Occasionally, a person will continue to have hives for many years.

7. Beekeeping In Top-Bar Hives (tbh's)
Website with information and links about this alternative method of beekeeping.

Top Bar Hive Beekeeping
An Alternative to Conventional Beekeeping
What's New
This website is devoted exclusively to collecting and distributing information about beekeeping with top-bar hives (tbh's). Tbh's offer many beekeepers an inexpensive but satisfying way of keeping bees that produces less (but better) honey and more beeswax. Enjoy your visit to this website, learn about tbh's, and give them a try. These top bar hives are on a stand, which permits them to be worked without bending over.
Organization of the information
Files of frequently asked questions (FAQ's) are maintained at this website to answer most of your questions about this method of beekeeping. You may have other questions which, if you will ask, can be incorporated into the files as they are edited. These files of "frequently asked questions" and "not so FAQ's" pertaining to beekeeping in top bar hives (tbh's) were compiled and edited with the help of many others, especially Joel Govostes. I include my personal opinions, but also those of others who made comments to the tbh thread that was on BEE-L. Please send me any corrections or offer different opinions to these questions if you wish. I'll edit this file to include them. If you make your comments referenced to section and question number, it will aid me greatly. For example, you will see how I have inserted responses from Tim Haarmann throughout the files. I shall always be indebted to my email mentor, Paul Magnuson of Pretoria, South Africa, who gave me the

Urticaria
Urticaria refers to a group of disorders in which red patches and weals occur in the skin. The release of chemicals from mast cells in the skin causes small blood vessels to leak and results in tissue swelling. The weals can be a few millimetres or several centimetres in diameter, coloured white or red, often surrounded by a red flare, and frequently itchy. Each weal may last a few minutes or several hours, and may change shape. Weals may be round, or form rings, a map-like pattern or giant patches. The surface weals may be accompanied by deeper swelling of eyelids, lips, hands and elsewhere. The swelling is called angioedema . Angioedema may occur with or without urticarial weals (10%).

Generalized urticaria (hives) is often classified according to how long it has been present.
  • Acute urticaria is of recent onset (hours, days or a few weeks).

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Colds, aches, pains, and other ailments Hives? Originally Published: December 03, 1993 Dear Alice, What about hives? Signed, Itchy Dear Itchy, Hives are one of many of your body's inflammatory responses to an allergen. Allergic reactions are a response of the immune system, but actually an inappropriate response that is usually perceived as annoying, and occasionally can be life-threatening. Your body recognizes a relatively harmless substance, such as dust, pollen, animal hair, or a type of food, as a dangerous antigen and mounts an immune response to it. The accompanying inflammation can be in the form of hives, asthma, itchy eyes, vomiting, etc. Though allergies certainly involve physiological and immunological responses in the body, many believe they are also strongly associated with a person's emotional and psychic state. Sometimes, skin eruptions may be a sign of "itching to get away" from something or someone. This is not to suggest that the allergy is not real, but that the causes are complex and lie as much within us as in what we are exposed to in the environment. So in looking for the cause of your own hives, make sure you look at foods, dust, air quality, etc., as well as how you are feeling your mind-body balance.

Over-the-counter status for Claritin considered to treat hives
WASHINGTON (CNN) An advisory committee for the Food and Drug Administration will decide Monday whether to recommend making the popular allergy drug Claritin available over the counter to treat hives. An advisory committee recommended making it available over the counter for allergies last summer. However, the FDA has yet to act on that recommendation. The agency is expected to make a decision by the end of November. The FDA usually goes along with what its advisory committees recommend, although it is not required to do so. No medication for hives is available without a prescription. The same dosage of Claritin to treat hives is used for allergies, and it would be impossible to stop consumers from taking the drug as an allergy remedy if it was sold over the counter.
Allergy drug costs
Claritin Zyrtec Allegra $52 or $99* * Cost of Allegra depends upon the dosage Source: Random sampling of pharmacies for a 30-day supply An FDA advisory panel deemed Claritin safe to sell over the counter last year. Changing its status likely would bring the cost of the drug down considerably. Insurance companies, however, would no longer have to pay for the drug once it's available without a prescription.

Urticaria (Hives) I. Definition: Hives are itching red welts or small bumps that last for 15 minutes to several hours. They usually appear suddenly and leave no trace when they disappear. Crops of hives may appear several times a day, they may even last for weeks, sometimes longer. Hives are harmless except when they cause throat swelling; this is rare but requires immediate treatment. II. Causes:
  • Hives can be caused by something taken internally, most often a medicine such as penicillin or aspirin. Sometimes foods cause hives; shellfish and strawberries are well-known examples. Hives are also sometimes caused by infection. Most of the time, we do not find the cause.
III. Treatment:
  • When treating hives, we try to find their cause. Medicine is prescribed to control the rash and itching. Hives are usually controlled with antihistamines. (Caution: antihistamines may cause drowsiness; if you feel sleepy, don't drive. Also do not drink alcohol.) Injections of epinephrine (Adrenalin) may be used for treating severe hives. Sometimes epinephrine-like medicines taken by mouth are used in combination with antihistamines.

NEWSFLASH NEWSFLASH!!
New picture surfaced. This one is no fake.
As you have already read previously in the PRINT, and quite probably, noticed yourself, The Hives are still missing from the world of music. Last issue this reporter could reveal that no more than 9 months ago they had been in a lake in Sweden. And now, a new picture has surfaced. We came across this photograph in an envelope with no stamp on the doorstep of our HQ. This would indicate that someone dropped it off in person. The envelope carried the legend R.F. Could this mean Randy Fitzsimmons!?! Even if it doesn't someone knows about our quest and wants us, and eventually, you to know. This much is clear. The picture was immediately rushed to the lab and dusted for prints and fibers but unfortunately nothing was found. Whoever these people where they must have been seriously skilled professionals. Now for the real interesting part...
