Important Safety Information
FAMVIR (famciclovir) is not for everyone. In clinical studies with FAMVIR, the most commonly reported side effects included headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Ask your doctor if FAMVIR is right for you. If you have kidney problems, your doctor will determine if FAMVIR is appropriate, and if so, what the right dose is for you. See the full Prescribing Information for more information about FAMVIR. The efficacy of FAMVIR has not been established for the treatment of an initial outbreak of genital herpes infection. The safety and efficacy of FAMVIR for suppressive therapy beyond 1 year of treatment have not been established. Even with antiviral treatment, it is possible to spread the herpes virus.

Welcome to your Australian forum offering practical information about living with and managing the genital herpes virus.
Genital herpes is a common viral infection generally spread through sexual contact. Approximately 1 in 8 sexually active Australians has genital herpes. Of these, 20 per cent are aware that they have the virus, 60 per cent are unaware that they have it, but have symptoms, while another 20 per cent have no symptoms. However help is available. Medications can minimise the symptoms and spread of genital herpes. Your doctor can provide the best advice about which medication is right for you.

An Experimental Study on 472 Herbs Relating Antiviral Actions on Herpes Simplex Virus By Zheng Min Shi
Department of Microbiology
Jiangxi Medical University, (330006), China From "Journal of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine", Vol.10, No.1, pp 39-41, 1990. Using tissue culture method, the above study was primarily concerned with evaluating the antiviral effects of 472 traditional medicinal herbs comprising raw material 10mg/ml, through both initial (qualitative) and repeated (quantitative) screens, on type 1 herpes simplex virus. When dealing with water and alcoholic extracts, herbs found effective during initial screens were reduced after repeated screens by a range of 28.8 - 80.0 percent. Employing the basic value attained by the simultaneous route of drug administration, a stepwise declining of effective herbs would be: The more the routes of drug administration the less the multiple-route simultaneous efficacy of a herb. Through repeated screens, 10 highly effective herbs were identified:
  • Aristolochia debilis Artemisia anomala Lindera strychnifolia Patrina villosa Pinus massiana Prunella vulgaria Pyrrosia lingua Rhus chinensis Sargussum fusiforme and Taraxacum mongolicum
Clinically, among the 78 cases of herpetic keratitis due to HSV1 treated by Pyrrosia lingua and Prunella vulgaris eye drops, a cure was effected in 38 and an improvement in 37 with 3 being of no benefit.

Herpes Simplex The herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes blisters and sores around the mouth, nose, genitals, and buttocks, but they may occur almost anywhere on the skin. HSV infections can be very annoying because they may reappear periodically. The sores may be painful and unsightly. For chronically ill people and newborn babies, the viral infection can be serious, but rarely fatal. There are two types of HSV — Type 1 and Type 2.
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1
Often referred to as fever blisters or cold sores, HSV Type 1 infections are tiny, clear, fluid-filled blisters that most often occur on the face. Less frequently, Type 1 infections can occur in the genital area. Type 1 may also develop in wounds on the skin.
There are two kinds of infections — primary and recurrent. Although most people get infected when exposed to the virus, only 10 percent will actually develop sores. The sores of a primary infection appear two to twenty days after contact with an infected person and can last from seven to ten days. The number of blisters varies from one to a group of blisters. Before the blisters appear, the skin may itch, sting, burn, or tingle. The blisters can break as a result of minor injury, allowing the fluid inside the blisters to ooze and crust. Eventually, crusts fall off, leaving slightly red healing skin.

Skin Cancer Updates
Herpes Zoster Herpes zoster, also known as shingles or zoster, is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. Anyone who has had chicken pox can develop herpes zoster. The virus remains dormant (inactive), in certain nerve cells of the body, and when it reactivates it causes zoster. About 20 percent of those people who have had chicken pox will get zoster. Most people get zoster only once.
It is not clear what makes the virus reactivate or “awaken.” A temporary weakness in immunity (the body’s ability to fight infection) may cause the virus to multiply and move along nerve fibers toward the skin. Although children can get zoster, it is more common in people over the age 50. Illness, trauma, and stress may also trigger zoster.
People with a weakened immunity for any reason like cancers, leukemia or lymphoma, and AIDS are prone to developing zoster. Medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation for cancer, drugs taken to prevent rejection of transplanted organs, and cortisone taken for a long time, can make someone susceptible.
What are the symptoms of zoster?

A compound in red wine prevents herpes from entering the body
An ingredient of red wine could prevent the spread of herpes, according to scientists. Research carried out in the US has found that the compound in red wine, when daubed on infectious sores, can stop a sufferer passing it on and could even lessen the chance of sores developing fully. The scientists suggest this compound could also be used to treat facial cold sores if rubbed onto the affected area before the sores appear. They also suggest it could be put in condoms or contraceptive foams to prevent the spread of genital herpes. Herpes is caused by two different viruses. The first called herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) causes cold sores. The second is called herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) or genital herpes. Neither are curable or fatal if contracted by an adult. Genital herpes can cause painful blisters, ulcers or crusts in the genital area and the buttocks. It can be dangerous if passed from mother to baby during pregnancy causing blindness and life-threatening illness in the infant.

Herpes
Herpes simplex is a common and usually mild recurrent skin condition. It can cause "cold sores" or "fever blisters" on the mouth or facewhat is called oral herpes. It can also cause similar symptoms in the genital area, which is known as genital herpes.
A virus causes herpeseither herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) or herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2). As with all viruses, there is no cure for herpes. It is different from other common viral infections because once it is introduced it lives in the body over a lifetime, often without symptoms or with periodic symptoms. This is called "latency." The virus can travel the nerve pathways in a part of the body and hide away, sleeping, in the nerve roots for long periods of time. Even though HSV may not cause "cold sores" or genital signs or symptoms at the moment, it can still cause symptoms later. Find Questions and Answers about herpes here

    38. Etiology Of Bell's Palsy
of symptoms and risk factors associated with facial paralysis (Bell's palsy). Explanation of the connection with herpes Simplex 1.......
    http://pbl.cc.gatech.edu/mindy/310
    Etiology of Bell's Palsy
    ETIOLOGY OF BELL'S PALSY:
As sited by numerous journals and references, Bell's Palsy is a diagnosis resulting from the process of elimination of other Facial Palsy causes. Left and right side paralysis occurs equally. Its etiology remains unknown, although various studies have led people to believe that it is a mononeuritis cranialis or neuritis vestibularis induced by either a viral infection or an autoimmune disease(Schrader and Sumner, 1996).
Acquisition of these recent infections and diseases are all considered to be associated factors to possible episodes of facial paralysis (Billue, 1997):
    - Upper Respiratory infections
    - Ear infections
    - Epstein-Barr virus
    - Cytomegalovirus
    - Group G Streptococcus
    - Mycoplasma
    - Kawasaki Disease
    - Chlamydia - HIV - Herpes Simplex Virus - Diabetes - Hypothyroidism - Hypertension - Cancer - Syphilis - Sarcoidosis - Multiple Sclerosis THE VIRAL ETIOLOGICAL HYPOTHESIS: RISK FACTORS: The onset of Bell's Palsy creates maximal unilateral motor deficits occurring over a few hours. Pain behind the ear is a common symptom that generally precedes paralysis by one or two days, as well as fever, tinnitus, and a slight hearing deficit. Voluntary and involuntary movements of the muscles are affected, and often impaired. Obvious physical signs that the patient exhibits are facial asymmetry, drooling, a widened palpebral fissure, smooth forehead, and a flattened nasolabial fold causing a depressed cheek. Symptoms not associated with Bell's Palsy are facial twitching, otorrhea, severe otalgia, and balance dysfunction.
