... Where can I get more information? What is HSP? HSP is a term for a group of rare, inherited neurologic disorders along the motor neuron disease continuum. Their primary symptom is progressive spasticity (stiffness) and weakness of the leg and hip muscles. There are at least twenty types of HSP and the genetic causes are known for eleven. The disorder is estimated to affect some 20,000 people in the U.S. There are many different names used for HSP. The most common are Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (or Paraparesis), Familial Spastic Paraparesis (or Paraplegia) and Strümpell-Lorrain Disease. Others are Spastic Paraplegia, Hereditary Charcot-Disease, Spastic Spinal Paralysis, Diplegia Spinalis Progressiva, French Settlement Disease, Troyer syndrome and Silver syndrome.

Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia
Hereditary spastic paraplegia is the term for a group of inherited neurological disorders characterized by weakness and spasticity or stiffness of the leg and hip muscles. There are at least 20 known types of hereditary spastic paraplegia, which is estimated to affect 20,000 people in the U.S. An inherited disease is caused by a gene mutation passed down from either the father or mother. With hereditary spastic paraplegia, these gene mutations alter the code for proteins involving the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, thus disrupting their proper function. There are three different modes of inheritance for hereditary spastic paraplegia: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and X-linked. Each mode has a different risk factor, ranging from almost zero to 50 percent. The most common form of hereditary spastic paraplegia, autosomol dominant, carries a 50 percent risk of inheritance.

Though the primary feature of HSP is severe, progressive, lower extremity spasticity Spasticity is a disorder of the body's motor system in which certain muscles are continuously contracted. This contraction causes stiffness or tightness of the muscles and may interfere with gait, movement, and speech. Spasticity is usually caused by damage to the portion of the brain or spinal cord that controls voluntary movement. It may occur in association with spinal cord injury, multiple

These include optic neuropathy, retinopathy Retinopathy is a general term that refers to some form of non-inflammatory damage to the retina of the eye. Most commonly it is the blood vessels that are the direct medium for the disease. Main causes of retinopathy are :
    • diabetes - diabetic retinopathy
    • arterial hypertension - hypertensive retinopathy
    • prematurity of the newborn - retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
    • sickle cell anemia

Though the primary feature of HSP is severe, progressive, lower extremity spasticity , in more complicated forms it can be accompanied by other neurological symptoms. These include optic neuropathy, retinopathy (diseases of the retina), dementia ataxia (lack of muscle control), icthyosis (a skin disorder resulting in dry, rough, scaly skin), [[mental retardation], peripheral neuropathy, and deafness . Diagnosis is primarily by neurological examination and testing to exclude other disorders. Specialized genetic testing and diagnosis are available at some medical centers. Is there any treatment? There are no specific treatments to prevent, slow, or reverse HSP. Symptomatic treatments used for other forms of chronic paraplegia are sometimes helpful. Regular physical therapy is important for improving muscle strength and preserving range of motion. What is the prognosis?

Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia What is Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia? Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), also called familial spastic paralysis, refers to a group of genetic disorders that are characterized by progressive weakness and spasticity (stiffness) of the legs. Symptoms of HSP may occur alone or, in more complicated forms of HSP, may occur in combination with a number of other neurological symptoms. Generally, the primary feature is severe, progressive, lower extremity spasticity. The spasticity sometimes occurs with abnormalities such as optic neuropathy, retinopathy (disease of the retina), dementia, ataxia (lack of muscle control), ichthyosis (a skin disorder causing dry, rough, scaly skin), mental retardation, and deafness. Is there any treatment?

There is currently no cure for HSP. However, researchers around the world are moving at a rapid pace to discover all the genes responsible for HSP and to develop effective treatments and cures. Additionally, HSP community volunteers organize meetings, conferences, fundraising events and social gatherings to help others and support researchers in the fight for a cure. Thanks to the on going DNA research there may be a cure soon. Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia is not a single disorder, but a group of inherited degenerative spinal cord disorders characterized by progressive weakness and spasticity of the legs. Symptoms can occur in childhood or at any age throughout adulthood. Initial symptoms include difficulty with balance, weakness and/or stiffness in legs, muscle spasms and dragging the toes. Other symptoms, such as bladder problems, can be associated with HSP.
