AMC Radiology Casebook 2001 ISBN preface Since the year Asan Medical Center was founded in 1989, I have had a privilege of experiencing so many interesting cases in the Department of Radiology, where almost a million radiological studies are performed each year.
A latent sense of incompleteness over my duty has always been there for the last several years, gradually becoming the drive to publish this book. Only a small number of cases have been shared with radiologists locally and globally through the papers published in scientific journals and only a few cases could be shown to the medical students in the lecture room, while most of the invaluable radiological cases were dumped onto x-ray file racks or, after installation of hospital-wide full PACS, sleeping in the optical discs.
This case book was written to present the most educational and informative cases in the Department of Radiology, Asan Medical Center, and will be updated every year in order to renew the ?ases-of- the-year.

High mental functions in healthy individuals and in cerebrovascular diseases A knowledge of time parameters of the high mental functions of the brain under normal and pathological conditions may serve as a key to understanding of their intimate mechanisms. During the first stage of the study a set of different tests including “word association”, “paired words learning” was used to compare these indices in patients with atherosclerotic discirculatory encephalopathy and in normal individuals. The dynamics and volume of the short-term memory and processes of attention were evaluated. An increase of the response latencies in the paired words’ tests and a decrease of both volume of short-term memory and the processes of attention were identifid. Application of the tests with semantically similar or unlike words was informative. M.Yu. Drobizhev, S.I. Ovcharenko, E.N. Ischenko, K.A. Baturin, O.V. Vishnevskaya

Abstract
Background/Aims: Deterioration of hepatic encephalopathy is a major concern with the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt procedure. Symmetric hyperintense globus pallidus on T1-weighted cranial magnetic resonance imaging in patients with liver cirrhosis anticipates hepatocerebral disease. It is hypothesized that hepatic encephalopathy and basal ganglia signal intensity progress in patients with cirrhosis of the liver undergoing transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt.
