New generation of interferon treatment helps hepatitis C
BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) Two industry-sponsored studies in this week's New England Journal of Medicine have found that a new longer-acting form of interferon is far more effective than regular interferon for blocking the virus responsible for chronic hepatitis C. In tests on hundreds of patients, both teams of researchers found that more people who were given weekly injections of peginterferon alfa-2a responded better to the treatment than volunteers given the older, shorter-acting form known as interferon alfa-2a.

What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is a liver disease. It makes your liver, an important organ in your body, swell up (or become inflamed) and stop working well. A healthy liver helps your body fight infections, stops bleeding, takes drugs and other poisons out of your blood, and stores energy. Hepatitis can be mild and last for a short time or be very serious and cause liver failure and death.
What causes hepatitis?
Hepatitis is caused by a virus (a germ that causes sickness). Other things can harm the liver, such as alcohol or drug abuse and long-term use of some medications. Hepatitis affects millions of Americans and is a serious health problem in parts of Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.
What are the different types of hepatitis and how do you get them?
There are 5 types of hepatitis - A, B, C, D, and E - each caused by a different hepatitis virus.

    Hepatitis A
(infectious hepatitis) What is hepatitis A? Hepatitis A (formerly known as infectious hepatitis) is a liver disease caused by a specific virus. The disease is fairly common; more than 2,500 cases are reported in New York State each year. Who gets hepatitis A? Anyone can get hepatitis A, but it occurs more frequently in children, people travelling abroad, and men who have sex with men. How is the virus spread? The hepatitis A virus enters through the mouth, multiplies in the body and is passed in the feces. The virus can then be carried on an infected person s hands and can be spread by direct contact, or by consuming food or drink that has been handled by the individual. In some cases, it can be spread by consuming contaminated water. What are the symptoms of hepatitis A? The symptoms of hepatitis A may include fatigue, poor appetite, fever and vomiting. Urine may become darker in color, and then jaundice (a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) may appear. The disease is rarely fatal and most people recover in a few weeks without any complications. Infants and young children tend to have very mild symptoms and are less likely to develop jaundice than are older children and adults. Not everyone who is infected will have all of the symptoms. How soon do symptoms appear?

Hepatitis December 2001 WHAT IS HEPATITIS? Hepatitis Hepatitis is a disorder in which viruses or other mechanisms produce inflammation in liver cells, resulting in their injury or destruction. [ See Box The Liver.] In most cases, this inflammatory process is triggered when the immune system fights off infections caused by viruses. It can also be caused, however, by an overactive immune system that attacks its own liver cells. Inflammation of the liver can also occur from medical problems, drugs, alcoholism, chemicals, and environmental toxins. Hepatitis varies in severity from a self-limited condition with total recovery to a life-threatening or life-long disease.
Experts define hepatitis in one of two ways:
    • Short-term (acute hepatitis).
    • Prolonged (chronic hepatitis).
In some cases, acute hepatitis develops into a chronic condition, but chronic hepatitis can also occur on its own. Although chronic hepatitis is generally the more serious condition, patients having either condition can experience varying degrees of severity.
The Liver The liver is the largest organ in the body, occupying the entire upper right quadrant of the abdomen. It performs over 500 vital functions. Among them are the following:

530 hepatitis cases linked to restaurant
Story Tools HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library What is hepatitis A? Digestive system PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) The number of cases of hepatitis A linked to a Mexican restaurant rose to 530 Wednesday, but state health officials said the outbreak has slowed considerably since last week, when dozens of new cases were being reported daily. Secretary of Health Calvin Johnson said officials still haven't determined whether tainted green onions are behind the outbreak at the Chi-Chi's restaurant, but were continuing to investigate. Although at least one person reported contracting the disease after eating at the Beaver Valley Mall restaurant northwest of Pittsburgh as early as September 20, hundreds of cases have been linked to people who ate there in the first week of October, officials said.
