There are maladies... and there are really bloody embarrassing maladies! And there are few maladies more embarrassing than the painful humiliation of hemorrhoids. You can't even say the word without snickering, can you? And if you're old and decrepit like I am, you remember George Brett's battle with 'rhoids back in the early 80's - surely the most humiliating reason imaginable for sitting... er, standing... out a World Series? But when you get past the humiliation factor, hemorrhoids are really a most unpleasant malady, and one that is frequently misunderstood.
Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are much like varicose veins you might see on a person's legs. When bulging hemorrhoidal veins are irritated, they cause surrounding membranes to swell, burn, itch, become very painful, and bleed. Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum, forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them. The most frequent causes of hemorrhoids are: Constant sitting
Straining with bowel movements (from constipation or hard stools)
Diarrhea
Sitting on the toilet for a long time
Severe coughing
Childbirth
Heavy Lifting
There are two kinds of hemorrhoids: internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids usually don't hurt or itch; you can't feel them because they are deep inside the rectum. Internal hemorrhoids are pretty harmless. But since their bleeding could mask blood from a dangerous source like colorectal cancer, they should be treated. External hemorrhoids cause most of the symptoms we commonly hear about - pain, burning, and itching. (They also provide the gruesome images accompanying this page.) If an external hemorrhoid becomes strangulated (cut off from blood supply), a clot can form in it and become an excruciatingly painful thrombosed hemoroid. Because of these unpleasant symptoms, external hemorrhoids get the most treatment attention.

What Are the Symptoms of Hemorrhoids? How Common Are Hemorrhoids? How Are Hemorrhoids Diagnosed? ... How Are Hemorrhoids Prevented ?
1) What Are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are swollen but normally present blood vessels in and around the anus and lower rectum that stretch under pressure, similar to varicose veins in the legs. The increased pressure and swelling may result from straining to move the bowel. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, heredity, aging, and chronic constipation or diarrhea. Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external).

2) What Are the Symptoms of Hemorrhoids? Many anorectal problems, including fissures, fistulae, abscesses, or irritation and itching (pruritus ani), have similar symptoms and are incorrectly referred to as hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening. In most cases, hemorrhoidal symptoms will go away within a few days.

Back to Top General Hemorrhoids Information
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the anus and in the rectum. These veins enlarge and lose their elasticity, which results in sac-like bumps that invade the anal canal. Hemorrhoids, which should not be confused with tumors or growths, may be internal, external or prolapsed (protruding outside the anus). They usually cause pain on defecation and can result in rectal bleeding. One-half to 75 percent of all Americans experience hemorrhoids at sometime or another. Hemorrhoids can develop at any age, but they become more common between age 50 and 70, then rates tend to decrease.

Possible Causes of Hemorrhoids
Causes for hemorrhoids include pregnancy, constipation, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, heavy lifting, obesity, liver damage and food allergies. Some people believe that hemorrhoids are caused by constipation, but experts feel they are caused by straining at bowel movements that goes along with chronic constipation. Hemorrhoids are very common during pregnancy and after childbirth due to hormonal changes and pressure from the growing fetus.

Possible Symptoms of Hemorhhoids
Symptoms of hemorrhoids include burning, itching, inflammation, pain, irritation and bleeding in and around the anal area and rectum. The bleeding is often bright red, which can be alarming, but is not a sign of a serious digestive disorder when associated with hemorrhoids.

Rubber band ligation is probably the most widely used treatment for internal hemorrhoids. An applicator is used to place one or two small rubber bands around the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply (figures A and B). After 3-10 days, the rubber bands and the hemorrhoid fall off, leaving a scab which disappears within a week or two. (Illustration by Electronic Illustrators Group.) Definition
Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins in the anus or lower rectum. They often go unnoticed and usually clear up after a few days, but can cause long-lasting discomfort, bleeding and be excruciatingly painful. Effective medical treatments are available, however. Description
Hemorrhoids (also called piles) can be divided into two kinds, internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids lie inside the anus or lower rectum, beneath the anal or rectal lining. External hemorrhoids lie outside the anal opening. Both kinds can be present at the same time. Hemorrhoids are a very common medical complaint. More than 75% of Americans have hemorrhoids at some point in their lives, typically after age 30. Pregnant women often develop hemorrhoids, but the condition usually clears up after

: Hemorrhoids What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids (or piles) are enlarged veins in and around the anus and are quite common. Some form outside the anus, while others start inside the body and may protrude out of the anus during or after a bowel movement. What causes hemorrhoids?
What are the signs and symptoms?
Hemorrhoids cause rectal itching, irritation, burning and sometimes bleeding. They may cause swelling or discomfort during bowel movements and some hemorrhoids can be quite painful. What is the treatment for hemorrhoids?
There are several ways to treat hemorrhoids.
Most people can get relief by taking these simple steps:
  • Avoid foods that upset your digestion or cause diarrhea, such as spicy foods, alcohol and milk/dairy products. Drink 6 to 8 eight ounce glasses of water each day to help keep stools soft. Do not strain during bowel movements. Trying to force a bowel movement can make hemorrhoids worse and straining for more than 5 minutes can be harmful. Try not to stay on the toilet any longer than necessary.

Hemorrhoids Also indexed as: Piles Hemorrhoids are enlarged raised veins in the anus or rectum. Common hemorrhoids are often linked to both diarrhea and constipation Although the belief that hemorrhoids are caused by constipation has been questioned by researchers, most doctors feel that many hemorrhoids are triggered by the straining that accompanies chronic constipation. Therefore, natural approaches to hemorrhoids sometimes focus on overcoming constipation.

(or, at the very least, stop the itching and go on to some other aspect of your life that has got to be much more fulfilling) The simple fact that you are actually reading this says something in itself. Perhaps you have nothing better to do, which I doubt. Or, perhaps you have many better things to do, but you want to relieve, or better yet prevent, a sore heiney. 1. First, we can stop killing sharks (among our newest endangered species). "Preparation H" and its clones are made from shark liver oil. Use topical vitamin E instead. Medically speaking, "topical" means "applied directly to the surface." This really works, oh hemorrhoid sufferers. Make sure the anus is clean, and even more important, dry. After a shower or bath, blot the area with a clean, white tissue and wait ten or fifteen minutes. Then, puncture a vitamin E capsule with a push-pin. (You might even like to keep a push-pin in the bottle, as long as it is out of reach of children and brightly colored so you can spot it, too.) Place the opened end of the vitamin E capsule right up against the anus, and squeeze the capsule. Spread the slightly oily vitamin E around and you will be pleased with the prompt results. Repeat twice daily. 2. Eat more fiber. This means softer, easier to pass stools. Just lovely, this chat we're having here, isn't it?

    Definition
A mass of dilated, tortuous veins in the anorectum involving the venous plexuses of that area. There are two kinds: external, those involving veins distal to the anorectal line (a dilated vein or veins at the junction of anal mucosa with the anal skin); and internal, those involving veins proximal to the anorectal line (dilated veins of the lower rectum at the anal-rectal junction). Usually related to constipation, pregnancy, improper diet, lack of exercise, prolonged periods of sitting, heavy lifting, obesity, liver damage, and allergies. Approximately half of the population of the United States over fifty years of age suffer from hemorrhoids.
    Causes
Wrong eating habits may cause the majority of hemorrhoids. Eating a diet that contains a large amount of refined foods that are low in bulk (fiber), tends to cause small, hard stools, resulting in straining and constipation; this causes the pressure inside the colon to increase. Taking ordinary commercial laxatives that are on the market may also be a cause, as many of them irritate the membranous lining of the colon.
    Symptoms
Swollen veins are present around the anus or inside the rectum. These swollen blood vessels frequently become irritated and bleed. Hemorrhoids may itch, burn (sting), tear, and bleed, causing discomfort and pain. Severe hemorrhoids should be evaluated and treated by the doctor.

Still have hemorrhoids from the pregnancy
May 2002 Several months after my second child was born, I still have hemorrhoids from the pregnancy. I do everything recommended by the doctors (including drinking lots of water, eating fiber, exercising, and the various medications) and constipation is not a problem. I'm frustrated and on the verge of considering the more extreme solutions such as surgery. Before I do so, I wonder if anyone has tried alternative medicine for this problem. I've had acupuncture, but it didn't seem to help. You didn't mention how long it's been since you delivered your baby. I had terrible hemmoroids with my first child and I'm happy to say that I didn't have any with my second. It took ages for them to finally go away. I adapted my diet as you did. Then, ever time one popped out, I pushed it back in. I used a drop of vitamin e oil, though I think you could probably use nearly anything slippery. I also, and still continue to cleanse with wet toilet paper instead of dry. It's much more comfortable, effective, and cost conscience than adult wipes. There's also no extra chemicals. Then the other thing I did, is begin an exercise program that includes toning my perineal musculature. That has really helped then not come back. Also, less sitting and more movement breaks. I hope this helps. Good luck. Dori
