I am on veralean pm 100mg. and desperimine 10mg. to try and decrease the migraine attacks. Veralean pm for 1yr. desperimine 2wks. Thanks in advance Answer Posted By: CCF-Neuro-M.D.-RPS on Sunday, June 24, 2001
Dear Penny40:
I am sorry about your symptoms. I do not think that you have hemiplegia migraine. The word Hemi-means one side and your symptoms are both sides. Hemiplegia migraine is something that you would not develop from taking immetrix. I am not sure what is causing your symptoms. What might be happening is that the injection of serotinon was inducing vasospasm and causing your numbness. However, this does not explain why your getting symptoms without the medication. It might be that one of your other diseases is beginning to have more dominant symptoms. It is difficult to tell over the internet. I would favor the latter.
Sincerely

Question Posted By: marie toth on Sunday, May 10, 1998
I am 22 years old. I have had migraines since I was 8 yrs old. I never saw a doctor for them before I was 20. After I met my paternal grandmother she told me she also gets migraines but thinks they were associated with her heart condition.
What I am wondering is recently someone told me about Bam, and Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. What are the tests for this and could there be possibly something that is being overlooked here? Also I will probably be exiting the Air Force soon due to my condition can you tell me if there are any headache clinics in my area, and if there is a program for this at Johns Hopkins. I don't want to start out cold again to find a good neurologist.
Dear Marie Toth:
I am going to answer your questions briefly:
1. The association between migraine, basilar migraine and epilepsy has been previously reported. But the mechanisms of this association is unknown. What you describe could be seizures that are independent from your migraine headaches (which they seem to be more frequent than average).

Hemiplegic Migraine
This response submitted by Lawana on 10/7/96. Author's Email: beard@hiwaay.net I have migraines with aura as well as numbness and pain on the left side of my body. I also sometimes have severe pain in the left side of my face where the nerve goes through the cannel in the jaw (trigeminal neuralgia).
I've been diagnosed with everything from MS to fibromyalgia as well as classic migraines. I had to go off the depakote (for the migraines) because it was causing my hair to fall out. Because of pain and etc. I can't do the things I want to do for my family. I recently met a lady who was diagnosed with hemiplegic migraines. Could someone explain a little more about this and where to get more information and help.

Posted by mercedes on July 16, 2003, at 3:16:19 In reply to Re: BAM/familial hemiplegic migraine , posted by bookgurl99 on July 15, 2003, at 22:02:57 Books, fhm is in the BAM family. I looked it up. I feel for you because I can also relate to the loss of words after an attack. The more attacks I have the worse I get. I too considered myself very intelligent, being in the acctg field my entire career, getting promotions regularly until 7 years ago. Really feel sorta dumb now. I have trouble comprehending/short term memory loss. I think I mentioned this before, can't remember. I was on Depakote (prescribed by a neurologist) about a year ago. Took it for about two years. I still had the attacks and it made me very sleepy and lathargic but, I was also on xanex which could have contributed to the SE. For me, the depakote didn't do a thing for the attacks. I stopped the depakote when I started taking effexor. Effexor has not stopped the attacks altogether but they are less now. Again thank you for leading me in the right direction re: BAM. I have to do more research on it but will surely mention it to my Dr.

Background: Many conditions exist under the rubric of “migraine variant.” Migraine variants (MVs) generally are paroxysmal disorders, which include either headache as a prominent feature among a collection of symptoms or occurrence in individuals who have a personal or family history of migraine. MVs occur more frequently in children and adolescents than in adults; they may precede the development of more typical migraines in adulthood. MVs are less recognized, less understood, and far less common than migraines; consequently, little population-based data are available describing the incidence or prevalence of MVs. Few randomized, controlled trials exist that describe efficacious treatments for these unusual entities. Recognition of MV is important, since many respond to typical antimigraine medications. Also, the clinical presentation of MV may suggest ominous disease processes which can lead to extensive and invasive diagnostic evaluations that may not be warranted. MVs include the following:
  • Familial hemiplegic migraine
  • Basilar migraine
  • Benign coital headache
  • Ophthalmoplegic migraine
  • Retinal migraine
  • Alternating hemiplegic migraine (primarily in childhood)
