Red decolouration of the urine can have various causes: edit
Analysis
A patient will be asked a number of questions:
  • Have you passed any blood clots Has a kidney stone been passed (noise in toilet bowl)? Is the red colour mixed in completely, or does the colour change during an episode of urination? Does it only occur after getting up? Have you recently had a sore throat?

Diagnosis
Often, the diagnosis is made on the basis of the medical history and some blood tests Ultrasound investigation of the renal tract is often used to distinguish between various sources of bleeding. X-rays can be used to identify kidney stones , although CT scanning is probably more precise.

Hematuria means blood in urine. Significant hematuria is defined as more than 5 red blood cells/HPF of a standard urinary sediment. The site of bleeding can be from kidneys / pelvicalyceal system / ureters / urinary bladder or urethra. Rarely hematuria is due to coagulation disorder. The colour of the urine can give clue to the site of hematuria eg. Investigations of hematuria Urine -color -dipstick to detect blood / benzedine test (+ve with Hb / myoglobin and proteinuria) -microscopy of urine for RBC's -Wright's stain / phase contrast microscopy / Coulter counter can detect source of bleeding from glomerular or non glomerular source Clinical clues from history and physical examination Dysuria, loin pain, colic -

Overview of this condition Hematuria is a clinical term referring to the presence of blood, specifically red blood cells, in the urine.
Whether this blood is visible only under a microscope or present in quantities sufficient to be seen with the naked eye, hematuria is a sign that something is causing abnormal bleeding in the patient's genitourinary tract. The source of the bleeding can be located anywhere along this tract: the kidneys, the ureters (the tubes running from the kidneys to the bladder), the prostate gland (in men), the bladder or the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body). The bleeding may happen only once or it may be recurrent. It may or may not be accompanied by pain or discomfort during urination, and it can indicate different problems in men than in women. The cause may be as routine as an infection or as serious as cancer. Whatever the circumstances, hematuria should be regarded as a danger signal demanding immediate attention. Only a thorough physical examination and medical evaluation can interpret its meaning, determine its cause, or provide the patient with facts needed to make informed decisions about its treatment.

Hematuria
Microscopic hematuria: more than 5 red blood cells per high power field in the sediment from 10 mL of centrifuged freshly voided urine. Gross hematuria (visible to the naked eye): may originate from the kidney (may contain red blood cell casts, and is usually brown) or from the bladder and urethra (pink urine, may contain clots). Recurrent gross hematuria Recurrent episodes which usually develop 1-2 days after the onset of a viral upper respiratory tract infection. It resolves over 1-2 weeks, but microscopic hematuria may persist. Biopsy is recommended after the second episode. Underlying diseases: IgA nephropathy (Berger nephropathy)
Idiopathic hematuria
Familial nephritis (Alport syndrome)
Idiopathic hypercalciuria
Berger nephropathy: IgA is the predominant immunoglobulin in mesangial deposits. It affects most commonly males than females (2:1); patients present with gross or microscopic hematuria. Progressive disease develops in 30% of patients. The development of hypertension, diminished renal function or proteinuria > 1 g/ 24 h indicate a poor prognosis. Idiopathic hematuria: the diagnosis is established by normal findings on biopsy. Long term follow up is necessary to exclude Alport syndrome. The development of diminished renal function, proteinuria or hypertension demands a second biopsy.

Toilet Training - Microscopic Hematuria
Potty Training Hematuria There are several different types of urine samples. The two most common are ..... How do I give a urine sample? A nurse will give you an antiseptic wipe (to clean yourself) and a sterile urine collection cup. In the bathroom, wash your hands with soap and warm water first. Is it the same for girls as it is for boys? For Girls: Use the antiseptic wipe to clean your vagina by wiping yourself from front to back 3 times before you urinate. Fold the wipe each time you use it, so that you are wiping with a clean part each time. For Boys: Use the antiseptic wipe to clean the head of your penis. If you're not circumcised, pull the foreskin back behind the head of the penis before you use the wipe. Move the wipe around the head of your penis before you urinate. Ready To Start urinating in the toilet. About halfway through the urination, start catching the urine in the cup. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Give the sample to the nurse. Your Pediatrician Can Help If any concerns come up before, during, or after toilet training, talk with your pediatrician. Often the problem or problems are minor and can be resolved quickly, but sometimes physical or emotional causes will require treatment. Your pediatrician's help, advice, and encouragement can help make toilet training easier. Also, your pediatrician is trained to identify and manage problems that are more serious.

Hematuria
Overview
Hematuria is the presence of red blood cells (RBCs) in the urine. In microscopic hematuria, the urine appears normal to the naked eye, but examination under a microscope shows a high number of RBCs. Gross hematuria can be seen with the naked eye the urine is red or the color of cola. Several conditions can cause hematuria. Most of the causes are not serious. For example, exercise may cause hematuria that goes away in 24 hours. Many people have hematuria without having any other related problems. But because hematuria may be the result of a tumor or other serious problem, a doctor should be consulted. In order to find the cause of hematuria, or to rule out certain causes, the doctor may order a series of tests, including urinalysis, blood tests, intravenous pyelogram, and cystoscopic examination.

General Discussion
Symptoms
Benign Familial Hematuria is a nonprogressive kidney disorder that usually begins in childhood and is characterized by the presence of red blood cells in the urine (hematuria) and scattered thinning of microscopic parts of the kidney (glomerular basement membranes). The amount of blood in the urine may be microscopic or visible, and is often preceded by a respiratory infection. Unlike other kidney disorders, there is little or no blood plasma protein in the urine (proteinuria), and there is no change in the renal (kidney) function. In children with this disorder there may be a clearing of the urine after each episode; in adults the blood in the urine may be more persistent.
