Vascular Malformations and Hemangiomas
What is a hemangioma?
A hemangioma is a type of birthmark. It is the most common benign (non-cancerous) tumor of the skin. Hemangiomas may be present at birth (faint red mark) or may appear in the first months after birth. A hemangioma is also known as a port wine stain, strawberry hemangioma, and salmon patch.
What is a vascular malformation?
A vascular malformation is another type of birthmark, or congenital (present at birth) growth, made up of arteries, veins, capillaries, or lymphatic vessels. There are several different types of malformations and they are named according to which type of blood vessel is predominantly affected. A vascular malformation is also known as lymphangioma, arteriovenous malformations, and vascular gigantism.
What is the difference between a hemangioma and a vascular malformation?

Health Newsfeed # 1553
HEMANGIOMAS/A BLEMISH ON CHILDHOOD That beautiful skin, that flawless face...the joy of a newborn is every parent’s delight. But for some parents a glance at their baby soon becomes a source of concern. By 2 months of age, nearly ten percent of infants develop fast-growing lesions called hemangiomas. The growths can be large and unsightly, and half appear on the head and neck, but according to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Dermatologist Bernard Cohen they’re usually not dangerous. Most of these hemangiomas don’t cause medical problems. Occasionally, the more complicated hemangiomas can cause medical problem, because, like real estate, it’s where they come up, where they pop up. If they pop up on your eyelid, sit in the way and block your fields of vision, it’s a problem. So there are certain unusual complications that need to be dealt with, but most of the kids do great, and don’t need any special interventions.” :23 Cohen adds that many hemangiomas completely clear up by the time kids begin grade school. At the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, I'm Mat Edelson reporting.

Journal of Drugs in Dermatology
Dec, 2002 by Alysa R. Herman John A. Carucci
Introduction Hemangiomas are benign neoplasms of vascular endothelium. They represent the most common pediatric tumor and are seen in 8-12% of Caucasian children by age 11. Hemangiomas have a female predilection, occur with greater incidence in premature infants, and demonstrate a characteristic and distinctive clinical course marked by rapid growth during the first year of life, followed by a slower period of regression. Statistically, more than 90% of these lesions will have involuted by age 10. While the vast majority of hemangiomas are asymptomatic, in some cases they can be life-threatening and require emergency treatment. Indications to treat include obstruction of the visual, respiratory or genitourinary tracts, high output cardiac failure, perichondrial involvement, ulceration, and bleeding. Treatment modalities include intralesional and systemic corticosteroids, interferon-alpha, surgery, and laser ablation (2,3). Case Report A 3-month-old baby girl was admitted to New York Presbyterian Hospital with stridor and respiratory distress. While hospitalized, Dermatology was consulted to evaluate a rash on her right face that had been progressively worsening for 4 weeks. The child was born in New York, had no significant past medical history, and no family history of dermatologic or other medical problems.

A very important grant has been denied. It is needed to help fund research and treatment studies for Birthmarks. This study would have helped many families and saved some lives (yes, some Birthmarks can be life threatening).
Please read this petition and sign it. If you know other people who would be willing to sign this, please forward it to them.
If you need more information about Hemangiomas and other Birthmarks, please visit my support group and learn more. My site is at http://tarheelhemangiomas.tripod.com. Please read on to learn more about this Grant.....
THIS FUNDING WOULD HAVE PROVIDED CRITICAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO HELP EXPAND THE MEDICINE AND SCIENCE OF HEMANGIOMA AND VASCULAR MALFORMATION, AS WELL AS COORDINATE PATIENT SUPPORT IN THE FIELD.
Because the NIH denied this grant the necessary funding will not be available to the institutions thus delaying the development of a multicenter organization. THIS DENIAL WILL EFFECT OUR CHILDREN.
According the to physicians involved it is apparent that some politics are involved in these applications and while it is not clear what programs have received funding it is suggested that some already well funded programs have received more funding from the NIH.
