Patient's struggle shows another side to drug bans
WASHINGTON (AP) Unable to speak, Rob O'Neill moans in pain as his stomach and intestines struggle to digest food. It's a sound the parents of this disabled man have heard since July, when the only therapy that helps the heartburn drug Propulsid was pulled from pharmacy shelves. Propulsid's maker promised a special program to keep shipping the pill to certain people with no other hope, but doctors say many patients like the 22-year-old O'Neill of Lexington, Kentucky who cannot process food because of severe cerebral palsy are still waiting.

Heartburn
Definition: Heartburn is a painful burning sensation in the esophagus, which lies just below the breastbone. The pain often rises in your chest and may radiate to your neck or throat.
Alternative Names: Pyrosis; Non-cardiac chest pain
Common Causes: Almost everyone has occasional heartburn. If you have frequent, ongoing heartburn, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Reflux is when food or liquid travels from the stomach back up into the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach). This partially digested material is usually acidic and can irritate the esophagus, often causing heartburn and other symptoms. Normally, when you swallow, the muscular walls of the esophagus move in waves to push the food down into the stomach. Right after the food enters your stomach, a band of muscle at the end of your esophagus (called the lower esophageal sphincter or LES) closes off the esophagus. If this muscle fails to close tightly enough, the stomach contents can back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. Heartburn can also be a side effect of certain drugs, including:

New warning for heartburn drug Propulsid
June 30, 1998
Web posted at: 11:15 a.m. EDT (1515 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) The Food and Drug Administration is urging doctors to try everything else before prescribing Propulsid, a heartburn drug taken by President Clinton, out of concern the drug may cause serious heart problems. The FDA ordered strengthened warnings for Propulsid Monday after reports of heart rhythm abnormalities, including 38 deaths, since the pill hit the market in 1993. The FDA said it cannot prove the drug caused any deaths but noted that Propulsid already was known to cause irregular heartbeat rhythm, known as heart arrhythmia, when taken together with certain other medicines. Monday's action strengthens those warnings, adding newly discovered drug interactions and a list of other illnesses that increase the risk. The drug's manufacturer, Titusville, New Jersey-based Janssen Pharmaceutica

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Beating holiday heartburn
Dr Sanjay Gupta says his personal hot dog eating record is roughly 25 over a five year period. (CNN) The Fourth of July can be fraught with pitfalls like dangerous fireworks, boating injuries and good old fashioned heartburn. With the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest in mind, CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta considered this burning question and talked Thursday with CNN anchor Leon Harris about loading up your plate without loading down your stomach. GUPTA: Heartburn the name is sort of a misnomer. It actually, obviously has nothing to do with your heart. A lot of people used to confuse that sort of pain with chest pain from heart pain, and really [they are] two totally different things. Obviously, it's an acid that actually comes from your stomach, bubbles up into the esophagus, and causes an indigestion-type pain. Why does that occur? Usually because people eat a lot of food, and sort of keep the things open between the esophagus and the stomach, and that allows acid to pop back up.

Bush on Israel: Heartburn for All
by Daniel Pipes
New York Post
March 4, 2003
Consistency and predictability are core strengths of George W. Bush as a politician. Be the issue domestic (taxes, education) or foreign (terrorism, Iraq), once he settles on a policy he sticks with it. There is no ambiguity, no guessing what his real position might be, no despair at interpreting contradictions. Even his detractors never complain about "Tricky George" or "Slick Bush." But there is one exception to this pattern. And - couldn't you have predicted it? - the topic is the Arab-Israeli conflict. Here, Bush not only seems unable to make up his mind, but he oscillates between two quite contrary views. For example, at the height of the Palestinian assault against Israel last April, the president delivered a major address that contained within it a flagrant contradiction. * He began by slamming Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority (PA) for its terrorism against Israelis, and he fingered several groups, one of them (Al-Aqsa Brigades) under Arafat's control, attempting to destroy Israel. In this spirit, not surprisingly, Bush approved of Israeli efforts at self-protection, saying that "America recognizes Israel's right to defend itself from terror."

Heartburn is a burning sensation that often extends from the lower throat to the bottom of the breastbone. It is caused by both hormonal and physical changes in your body. During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone , which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the oesophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up the pipe, which causes that uncomfortable sensation of heartburn. Progesterone also slows down the wave like contractions of the stomach, making digestion sluggish. In later pregnancy, the

Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA
FDA Approves Prilosec OTC to Treat Frequent Heartburn
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced the approval of Prilosec OTC (omeprazole), the first over-the-counter treatment for frequent heartburn. "Today’s approval of over-the-counter Prilosec is yet another example of the important role FDA serves in improving access to safe and effective treatments for conditions that people can treat themselves,” said Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., Commissioner of Food and Drugs. “As has been the case for many other over-the-counter switches, the availability of Prilosec OTC will help reduce costs and expand the availability of treatment options for millions of Americans.” Unlike the two classes of currently marketed over-the-counter heartburn treatments, antacids and acid reducers, Prilosec OTC is indicated for the treatment of heartburn that occurs two or more days per week (frequent heartburn). It stops acid production at its source in the stomach. Prescription Prilosec is currently widely prescribed for frequent heartburn and other related, but more serious, problems that need the care of a physician. Antacids and acid reducers, which have long been available over-the-counter, are used for the relief of acute heartburn symptoms. Acid reducers are additionally used for the prevention of meal-induced heartburn.

Heartburn
General Welcome/Mission Health Centers Services Departments ... Links/Resources What causes heartburn? Each time you swallow food, it travels down the esophagus to the stomach where it is mixed with stomach acid and other powerful digestive enzymes. The stomach is lined with cells that secrete mucus to protect it from this potentially destructive cocktail. A muscular ring at the base of the esophagus, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), relaxes to allow food to pass into the stomach, and then tightens to prevent backflow or reflux of acidic stomach contents into the more vulnerable esophagus. Unfortunately, a number of factors can interfere with this protective mechanism. Reflux is common, and often occurs without causing any symptoms because the body responds by quickly neutralizing and clearing the acidic contents from the esophagus. In some individuals, however, the protective mechanisms are not adequate to meet the challenge for reasons that we don't understand well. In these individuals, inflammation of the esophagus (called esophagitis) will occur and produce the classic symptoms of GERD. What are the symptoms of GERD?

AlkaSeltzer relieves heartburn, acid indigestion, over-indulgence, and sour stomach, with headache. heartburn does not involve the heart.
http://www.alka-seltzer.com/as/facts.htm
Acid Indigestion (also referred to as sour stomach or upset stomach), is a term used to describe abdominal discomfort often associated with food intake.
Symptoms include:
  • abdominal fullness
  • bloating
  • belching
  • heartburn
Heartburn
Heartburn does not involve the heart. This is a very common myth and it's certainly a scary one to think about. Heartburn can cause a burning sensation under the breastbone and mimic the pain of angina, but it has nothing to do with the heart. However, distinguishing between heartburn and heart disease can be difficult. If chest pain persists or is accompanied by other symptoms (such as light-headedness, sweating and rapid pulse), you should call for help immediately.
Occasional acid indigestion or heartburn is common in normal persons. However, frequent and severe symptoms may be signs of a serious condition that requires treatment under a doctor's supervision. Home Search FAQ's Alka-Seltzer Line of Products ... Site Map
