heartburn. heartburn is the most common symptom of a condition called gastroesophageal reflux or acid reflux. What Does heartburn Feel Like?
http://www.gastro.org/clinicalRes/brochures/heartburn.html
Heartburn Heartburn is the most common symptom of a condition called gastroesophageal reflux or acid reflux. A sphincter (specialized muscle), known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), is located at the end of the esophagus and opens during swallowing to allow food to pass into the stomach. The LES muscle then closes quickly to prevent the return (reflux) of food and stomach juices back into the esophagus. However, the LES muscle does not always work perfectly. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES muscle either relaxes inappropriately or is weak. This allows stomach juices to back up, or reflux, into the esophagus, creating heartburn. When the acid contents from the stomach regularly back up into the esophagus, a chronic condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs. Heartburn is sometimes called acid indigestion and usually occurs after meals. In addition to heartburn, symptoms of acid reflux may include persistent sore throat, hoarseness, chronic cough, asthma, heart-like chest pain and a feeling of a lump in the throat. There are several factors that influence the frequency and severity of acid reflux: the ability of the LES muscle to open and close properly, the type and amount of stomach juices that reflux up into the esophagus, the ability of the stomach to empty properly, the clearing action of the esophagus, the acid-neutralizing effect of saliva and other factors.

Treatments for heartburn and bipolar disorder
Editor's Note: Dr. Sanjay Gupta answers medical questions submitted by e-mail at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturdays on "Your Health." The questions and answers are available on CNN.com after the show. Q: What is the best treatment for heartburn? Rose Kassardjian in Whittier, California A: Well, Rose, according to WebMD, 20 percent of adult Americans have heartburn at least once a month. There are many different approaches to treating the feeling of burning, heat or pain in the upper abdomen and throat. For mild heartburn, simple lifestyle changes such as eating smaller meals, limiting spicy or acidic food intake, decreasing pressure on your stomach, losing weight and decreasing stress may help relieve heartburn. For more serious heartburn cases, try nonprescription antacids and acid reducers. Liquid or dissolving antacids usually work faster than tablet forms. Antacids do work faster than acid reducers, but their effect does not last more than one to two hours.

Heartburn and sleep
FROM Heartburn and sleep: Nearly eight in 10 people who experience heartburn (reflux) have symptoms during the night, and most of them lose sleep because of it, a new survey indicates. More than 60 million Americans experience heartburn regularly. It occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. While it affects nearly everyone at some time, recurrent heartburn may lead to severe inflammation of the esophagus and cancer.

Lately I've felt a terrible burning sensation after eating. Is it heartburn?
During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up the pipe, which causes that uncomfortable burning sensation. Progesterone also slows down the wavelike contractions of the stomach, making digestion sluggish. In later pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, slowing elimination and pushing up the stomach acids to cause heartburn. Many women start getting heartburn and indigestion in the second half of pregnancy. Unfortunately, it usually comes and goes until your baby is born.

BOSTON (CNN) People who suffer from chronic heartburn and acid reflux are substantially more likely to develop a deadly cancer of the esophagus, according to a new study. Researchers also found that people who take antacids and other medications to battle heartburn and acid reflux do not reduce their cancer risk. Those treatments only mask symptoms and don't prevent or cure the underlying condition. The results of the Swedish study are reported in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Heartburn and Reflux Everyone has heartburn occasionally. This occurs when stomach acid flows upward (regurgitates) into the esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that carries food to the stomach. People usually feel heartburn as a burning sensation or pain behind the breastbone. Often, regurgitation of bitter-tasting stomach acid accompanies heartburn. An antacid or milk temporarily relieves heartburn for most people. Why Does Heartburn Occur?
To understand heartburn, let's look at the body's anatomy. The esophagus carries food and liquid to the stomach. A sphincter (specialized muscle) is located at the end of the esophagus. It is known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This muscle contracts much the same as the anus does to close the opening of the rectum to the outside of the body. The LES muscle should only open when food or liquid is passed into the stomach. However, the LES muscle does not always work perfectly. Sometimes it is too weak to stay completely closed, and stomach juices seep back into the esophagus. This is known as reflux. There are certain factors that contribute to reflux. The most common is eating a large meal. Along with swallowed air, a large meal causes pressure in the stomach to rise, and overpowers the LES muscle. The following are other factors that reduce the LES pressure and allow reflux:
