Description Return to top Heart transplants are the fourth most common (corneas, kidneys and liver are the most common) transplant operations in the U.S. (over 2,200 cases per year). A healthy heart is obtained from a donor who has suffered brain death but remains on life-support. The healthy heart is transported in a special solution that preserves the organ.
While the patient is deep asleep and pain-free (general anesthesia), an incision is made through the breast bone (sternum). The patient's blood is re-routed through tubes to a heart-lung bypass machine to keep the blood oxygen-rich and circulating. The patient's diseased heart is removed and the donor heart is stitched in place. Indications Return to top A heart transplant may be recommended for:

OK, so there's really nothing humorous or easy about heart transplant surgery. Last year in the U.S., almost 800 men, women, and children died while waiting for suitable donor hearts. But despite this general shortage of hearts, the operation was (and is) routinely performed in American hospitals (During the same period, about 2,300 hearts were successfully transplanted.*) Lasting up to seven hours (and sometimes longer), the surgery is time-consuming and the work, intricate and involved. The step-by-step procedure, however, is fairly straightforward and not at all difficult to comprehend.
Enter our virtual NOVA operating theatre, where you will be given a scalpel and perform a heart transplant of your own. Yes, our version of the operation has been greatly simplified. Nevertheless, all of the basic steps are outlined in this feature, and by the end of the operation, you will have a pretty good idea of what's involved in taking the heart of one human and making it work in another.
Have no fear. The surgeons by your side will guide your every move and prevent you from taking any missteps.

Heart Transplant In a nutshell This is very brief but it is a good general guide for more in-depth details read the other pages on the website and/or contact me or anyone of the transplant buddy's listed Patient becomes ill with heart failure of some kind (pumping action of the heart is greatly reduced) Heart transplant recommended by Doctors Admitted to hospital for transplant assessment Patients name is now added to the heart transplant waiting list The time spent on the list will vary considerably Patient gets the call and has to go to the hospital straight away they are prepared for surgery while the donor heart is retrieved (all being well they can move on to next stage) Patient is taken to theatre and transplant operation begins A transplant is the replacement of a patient's diseased heart with a normal heart from someone who has died, called a donor. The donor's heart is completely removed and quickly transported to the patient, who may be located across the country. The heart is cooled and kept in a special solution while being taken to the patient. During the operation, the patient is placed on a heart/lung machine. This machine allows surgeons to bypass the blood flow to the heart and lungs. The machine pumps the blood throughout the rest of the body, removing carbon dioxide (a waste product) and replacing it with oxygen needed by body tissues. Doctors remove the patient's heart except for the back walls of the atria, the heart's upper chambers. The backs of the atria on the new heart are opened and the heart is sewn into place.

Heart, Heart-Lung, and Lung Transplant Program
Stanford has been recognized as the pioneering center for heart transplants.
Dr. Norman Shumway and his colleagues developed the experimental basis for transplants in their early work, which laid the groundwork for the first adult heart transplant in the United States at Stanford in January of 1968. Since then, many innovations have originated with the Stanford program, which continues to advance new techniques in surgery. The Stanford team has conducted more than 1000 heart transplants. In 1981, the first successful transplantation of the lung was performed at Stanford by
Dr. Bruce Reitz and his colleagues as a heart-lung transplant. This was made possible by the use of the immunosuppressive drug, cyclosporine, and previous laboratory research performed at Stanford. The Stanford team is the longest continually active team performing lung transplantation, and new advances continue to be made in our research laboratories. At Stanford, more than 150 patients have received a heart-lung transplant, and recently, more than 120 patients have received either a single lung or double lung transplant. Innovations, which have been introduced in the transplant field from Stanford, have included:
