A heart murmur is innocent murmurs , and doctors estimate that up to 70 percent of active, healthy children develop them at some time. Furthermore, long-term studies of people who had such murmurs during childhood indicate that they are not associated with an increased risk of adult heart disease or any other lasting complications. The vast majority of murmurs detected in childhood disappear by the time the child is ten to 14 years old. In about ten percent of cases, an innocent murmur persists into adulthood. Even in an adult, however, such a murmur does not indicate serious disease. WHEN SHOULD I SUSPECT THAT MY CHILD HAS A HEART MURMUR?
Heart murmurs are usually detected when a doctor examines the child with a stethoscope. Pediatricians often discover them during routine school screenings or in presport or precamp examinations. Because newborns have rapid heart rates, their heart murmurs are harder to detect. To hear all the heart sounds, the pediatrician listens from several angles, including the armpit and the back. Heart murmurs and other sounds
Heart, section through the middle Definition: Murmurs are blowing, whooshing, or rasping sounds produced by turbulent blood flow in or near the heart. Often, they are caused by turbulent blood flow through the heart valves. Alternative Names: Chest sounds - murmurs; Heart sounds - abnormal Considerations: A doctor can evaluate heart sounds by listening with a stethoscope. They can be further evaluated with an echocardiogram to see what the exact cause of the murmur is. The heart has four chambers two upper chambers (called atria) and two lower chambers (ventricles). The heart has valves that temporarily close to permit blood flow in only one direction. The valves are located between the atria and ventricles, and between the ventricles and the major arteries from the heart. Normal heart sounds are called S1 and S2. They are the "lubb-dupp" sounds that are thought of as the heartbeat. These sounds are produced when the heart valves close. Because the heart is also divided into a "right side" and a "left side," sometimes these sounds may be somewhat divided most commonly noted is a "split S2," caused when the right and left ventricles contract at very slightly different times. This is normal, but occasionally the nature of the split can indicate an abnormality such as enlargement of one of the ventricles.

Hello Matt The murmur happens as the blood goes through the heart's chambers or valves. The (stenotic) valve doesn't open completely, so blood may be ejected through a smaller than normal opening or the valve may not close completely which then lets some of it "leak" back into the chamber that it just left. Then, the murmur or swishing sound can be heard. As the heart contracts and relaxes during its beating cycle, the abnormal noise is heard. Sometimes, the valve is simply too tight or holes in the chambers can cause them too.
  • diastolic murmur: occur during heart muscle relaxation (no pumping of blood out of the heart to the body) and happens between beats
  • systolic murmurs: occur during heart muscle contraction (pumping of blood out of the heart) and these are the murmurs graded from 1 to 6
  • stenotic heart valve: the valve doesn't open completely, making the blood be ejected through a smaller opening as discussed above

What is a heart murmur?
A heart murmur is an extra sound between heartbeats. The sound is made by blood flowing turbulently through the heart. It is similar to the sound water makes as it flows through a pipe.
How does it occur?
Murmurs can result from:
  • the shape of the heart abnormalities of heart structures, such as the valves or heart walls, which may have been present since birth heart muscle damage caused by coronary artery disease heart infections damaged or overworked heart valves resulting from illnesses such as strep infections causing rheumatic fever, or from heart disease, heart attacks, infective endocarditis, or other valve problems.
When your heart beats faster, it changes the rate and amount of blood moving through your heart. This can cause heart murmurs. Some of the conditions that cause your heart to beat faster are:
  • anemia high blood pressure pregnancy fever stress thyroid problems.

When your doctor listens to your heart with her stethoscope, she is listening for the normal 'lub dub' sound made with each heartbeat. (These are called the first and second heart sounds.) A heart murmur is an additional sound that is heard with the stethoscope, something like a 'whooshing' noise. It may occur at different times during the 'lub dub' cycle, e.g. between the two sounds (lub whoosh dub), after the second heart sound (lub dub whoosh) or throughout the sounds of the heart beating. Overview of Heart Murmurs A heart murmur is defined as an abnormal heart sound. Normally, when a physician listens to a patient's chest wall, she will hear two heart sounds , the characteristic "lub-dub" that results from the simultaneous closing of the atrio-ventricular valves (the lub) and then the simultaneous closing of the semi-lunar valves (the dub). A heart murmur, then, is an extra sound in addition to the characteristic "lub-dub." This abnormal sound occurs because of an irregular flow of blood. However, the mere presence of a heart murmur does not always signal disease. Many heart murmurs are sounds that occur as blood circulates through the heart chambers, valves and blood vessels near the heart, and are not a cause for concern. These non-pathological heart murmurs are called "

Innocent Heart Murmurs of Childhood
What is an innocent heart murmur?
Heart murmurs are extra noises heard with each heartbeat. Many, but not all, murmurs occur even though the heart and blood vessels are completely normal. Murmurs in people that have a normal heart and blood vessels are called innocent murmurs. There are several different types of innocent murmurs that occur in childhood. Some occur when the child is very young, and others are heard later in childhood.

    http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00031.htm
Evaluation of Cough in Dogs with Heart Murmurs Clarke Atkins United States The coughing dog commonly presents both a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma to the practicing veterinarian. This is particularly true in middle-aged to aged small breed dogs, which are often afflicted with chronic respiratory disease and mitral insufficiency, each of which may result in coughing. The problem then becomes one of distinguishing the degree to which respiratory and/or cardiovascular disease are contributing to the cough. This is important because the therapies are quite different, and, in some instances, appropriate therapy for one worsens the other. The cough reflex, usually initiated by irritation of the pharynx, larynx, trachea, and larger bronchi, produces forceful expiration against a closed glottis, followed by sudden release and forced expulsion. This protective mechanism is useful in expelling foreign material, exudates, and organisms from the respiratory tract. It is also fatiguing and irritating to the patient and owner alike. However, suppression of coughing is not indicated in all instances. It is better to alleviate the underlying cause, and using cough suppressants only in a limited number of instances. For this reason, as well as to allow specific treatment and to more accurately prognosticate, a definitive diagnosis is mandatory. Causes of coughing are many, but in the population of dogs under discussion, cough most commonly results from upper airway disease, tracheobronchial collapse, chronic bronchitis of varying etiologies, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectsis, pulmonary neoplasia, pneumonia, and mitral regurgitation (the latter, usually but not always with heart failure). In mitral regurgitation, the cause of cough is not entirely clear, but left atrial impingement on the left main bronchus and/or recurrent laryngeal nerve, edema of the respiratory mucosa, interstitial fluid pressure on airways, and excessive bronchial mucous production have all been suggested as being contributory.

    What is a Heart Murmur
A heart murmur is a swishing or a whistling sound that the doctor hears when he listens to your child's heart with a stethoscope. The heart beat normally makes two sounds: the first is Lub and the second is Dub , these two sounds follow each other ( Lub Dub ) and are not separated by any extra sounds. A heart murmur will be heard as a swishing or a whistling sound in addition to the normal Lub-Dub sound. The moving blood sounds like the running water in your garden hose. A heart murmur may indicate that there is a heart problem or may be due to normal blood flow. A heart murmur is not a diagnosis or disease, it is a sign to alert our attention to check if there is anything wrong.
Most of the time heart murmurs are normal and do not indicate that there is anything wrong with the heart. However, sometimes they may result from a hole in the heart or a narrowed valve. A hole in the hose allows water to squirt out producing a whistling sound.
