Promising results from these studies plus extensive pre-clinical testing and scientific discovery paved the way to begin worldwide, multi-center, randomized clinical trials. These trials are designed to confirm the safety and further evaluate the efficacy seen in earlier, non-randomized studies of the CorCap. The randomized trial in the United States began in June of 2000 and expanded to 18 centers in 2001. Nine additional centers will be added in 2002. Over 155 implantations of the CorCap have been performed to-date and over 190 patients have been enrolled in Acorn's safety and randomized clinical studies. Acorn has obtained CE Marking for the CorCap in Europe. In addition, Acorn has achieved ENISO 9000 and EN 4600 Quality System Certification. Acorn is in the process of setting up European distribution to facilitate commercialization of the CorCap. Much progress has been made in the last two decades in understanding and treating the heart failure syndrome, especially in the areas of symptom relief and prevention of disease progression. But as fine as these accomplishments are, multiple studies are indicating that current medical treatments are limited in how far they go in preventing heart failure progression. The Acorn CorCap represents a simple, yet profound, new strategy for treating moderate heart failure.

What is heart failure?
Heart failure is a disorder in which the heart loses its ability to pump blood efficiently throughout the body. The oxygen and nutrients in the blood provide the body with the energy it needs to operate efficiently. Heart failure may affect the left, right, or both sides of the heart. If the left half of the heart fails (left ventricular failure), fluid will build up in the lungs due to congestion of the veins of the lungs.
The heart is the most important muscle in the body, pumping blood to every part of the body.

It is important to take your medicine every day as directed by your doctor or healthcare provider. Do not stop taking Coreg suddenly, because you could have serious side effects, such as chest pain or a heart attack. If your doctor decides you should stop taking Coreg , your doctor or healthcare provider may slowly reduce your dose over a period of time before stopping it completely. Some common side effects associated with Coreg include shortness of breath, a slow heartbeat, weight gain, fatigue, dizziness or faintness. People taking Coreg who have any of these symptoms should call their doctor. Additionally, if patients experience fatigue or dizziness, they should sit or lie down and avoid driving or hazardous tasks. As with any medicine, there are some people who should not take Coreg . The people who should not take Coreg include those with severe heart failure who are hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Also, people who require certain intravenous medications that help support their circulation (inotropic medications) should not receive

Quinapril
(kwin' a pril)
Brand name(s): Accupril
Why is this medication prescribed?
Quinapril is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It decreases certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels so that blood flows more smoothly and the heart can pump more efficiently. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How should this medicine be used?
Quinapril comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take quinapril exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Quinapril controls high blood pressure and heart failure but does not cure them. Continue to take quinapril even if you feel well. Do not stop taking quinapril without talking to your doctor.
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking quinapril

Heart failure at one time was an almost untreatable disorder. Times have changed. Today, there are many important and effective measures that can be utilized to improve the symptoms, and the survival, of patients with congestive heart failure. Perhaps more than in other conditions, it is important to understand what is going on, and for the patient to participate in the care of this condition. It is very common, affecting over 2 million people in the United States including one in 10 people over the age of 75, and is the leading cause of hospital admissions for patients in the Medicare population. It is increasing in frequency as our population ages and as we find better ways to help people survive initial heart attacks they now can survive to experience CHF. It may be worthwhile to learn or review about [ How the Heart Works ] now or at some point in your reading of this section. ©COPY;1997 HeartPoint Updated June 1998

H eart failure affects an estimated 4.9 million Americans, or 1 percent of adults 50 to 60 years of age and 10 percent of adults in their 80s. Each year, about 400,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed in the United States. This clinical syndrome is the most frequent cause of hospitalizations in the elderly and is responsible for 5 to 10 percent of all hospital admissions. Heart failure causes or contributes to approximately 250,000 deaths every year. The clinical syndrome of heart failure manifests when cellular respiration becomes impaired because the heart cannot pump enough blood to support the metabolic demands of the body, or when normal cellular respiration can only be maintained with an elevated left ventricular filling pressure. Zachary Chase Oakes,
born Fri. Oct. 13th, 1995 ,6 weeks early.
Zac was born with a very rare Heart Disease,
called Transposition of the Great Vessels.
At this time , there were very few cases in the US
with this type of Transpostion.
Zac would undergo his First Heart operation at only 4 days old.
Without Surgery right away ,Zac had no chance of survival. Zac remained in the Hospital approx a month following Surgery. He seemed to go down hill , but bounced back pretty quickly. There were a few times I broke down wondering if I would be able to take my baby home. While Zac was recovering from Heart surgery , he also had to learn to eat from a bottle , and we had to learn to put down an NG tube

"Heart Failure" occurs when the heart muscle cannot keep up with the needs the body has for blood flow. Weakening of the heart muscle can occur for a number of reasons, including heart attacks and long-term high blood pressure. It is a very important condition for which there is much to be done. Study links abnormal protein, heart's ability to pump blood
Story Tools RELATED Guidelines to heart disease prevention A new sign of heart disease risk Study: Heart after exercise test can predict death risk Science magazine WASHINGTON (AP) In a study that could lead to new treatment for congestive heart failure, researchers have shown that an abnormal form of a protein can be a fundamental cause. Earlier studies in animals had suggested that the protein phospholamban, or PLN, played a key role. Now, by studying four generations of a family in which the heart disease was common, researchers have shown that an abnormal form of the protein molecule was the primary cause. Dr. Christine E. Seidman, a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Harvard Medical School, said the abnormal PLN disrupts the calcium cycle in heart muscle and causes the heart to lose its ability to efficiently pump blood. Calcium causes heart muscles to contract and PLN then helps move the calcium away so that the muscles can relax between beats. This action, called a calcium pump, is essential for the proper beating of the heart.

Exercise Treatment of Congestive Heart Failure Sometimes, following damage to the heart muscle from an illness, (heart attack, viral infection or some other illness), the heart muscle is weakened. The heart looses the ability to feed oxygenated blood to the body or remove waste products from the organs of the body. This weakening of the heart muscle is called congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy. Symptoms that are commonly associated with congestive heart failure are:
  • Fatigue Shortness of breath, especially while laying flat or with any exertion Loss of appetite Swollen legs or ankles Weight gain Decrease urination during the day and increased urination at night
People develop congestive heart failure for different reasons. Your doctor will take a careful history of your condition and often recommends tests to help determine the underlying cause. The physician may recommend an echocardiogram , chest x-ray, electrocardiogram or stress test , lab test or angiography (heart catheterization). Once heart failure is diagnosed, it is often treated with medications, salt restriction and a balance of exercise and rest.
