Diet and the Risk of Heart Disease
Coronary heart disease CHD is our nation's number one killer. Fortunately, we know a great deal about the factors that put people at risk for CHD, and which of those factors are in our power to change. Much of the research into risk factors for CHD indicates that changes in diet and lifestyle can help reduce some people's risk for CHD even people who are genetically pre-disposed to developing it. By looking at all the risk factors that apply to you, identifying the ones in your control, and working to make positive changes, you stand an excellent chance of reducing your risk of CHD. The Cholesterol Connection If you want to know about your risk of heart disease, the first thing you need to do is get a blood test to check your cholesterol level. The test will measure the amount of cholesterol in your blood, which is an extremely important indicator of your risk for heart disease. While it is normal to have some cholesterol in your blood, it can be dangerous to have too much. This can happen if you eat a diet that is too high in cholesterol or in the saturated fats that can increase your cholesterol level.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease in Women: Systematic Reviews of Evidence on Selected Topics
Summary
Under its Evidence-based Practice Program , the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is developing scientific information for other agencies and organizations on which to base clinical guidelines, performance measures, and other quality improvement tools. Contractor institutions review all relevant scientific literature on assigned clinical care topics and produce evidence reports and technology assessments, conduct research on methodologies and the effectiveness of their implementation, and participate in technical assistance activities. Overview
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a common disease and cause of death in women, accounting for over 250,000 deaths in women per year. Over the last two decades, multiple important studies have helped define accurate clinical tests, risk factors, preventive interventions, and effective therapies for CHD. Unfortunately, many of these studies have either excluded women entirely or included only limited numbers of women and minorities. Thus, much of the evidence supporting contemporary recommendations for testing, prevention, and treatment of coronary disease in women is extrapolated from studies conducted predominantly in middle-aged men. The two best approaches to obtain additional evidence on diagnosis and treatment of CHD in women are to conduct large studies that include adequate numbers of women and minorities to answer the research question or to perform systematic reviews and meta-analyses summarizing effect estimates by subgroup.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF or A Fib)
More than 2 million people in the United States have atrial fibrillation, making it a very common heart rhythm disorder. In A Fib, the heartbeat is irregular and rapid, sometimes beating as often as 300 times a minute, about four times faster than normal. Although it isn't life threatening, A Fib can lead to other rhythm problems, chronic fatigue and congestive heart failure. Chances of having a stroke are five times higher for those with A Fib. [ more Atrial Flutter (AFL)
Atrial flutter is similar to A Fib because it too is characterized by a rapid heartbeat. Instead of many disorganized signals, however, AFL is caused by a single electrical wave that circulates very rapidly in the atrium, about 300 times a minute, leading to a very fast, steady heartbeat. [ more Sick Sinus Syndrome (SSS)
SSS is not a specific disease, but a group of signs or symptoms that indicate the heart’s natural electrical pacemaker, the sinoatrial node, is not functioning properly. In SSS, the heart rate can switch back and forth between a slow rate (bradycardia) and a fast rate (tachycardia). A permanent pacemaker, sometimes in combination with medication, is the primary treatment.

This is the second edition of a report by the Brewers of Europe about the beneficial effects associated with the moderate consumption of beer, produced in 2002. The report is presented in PDF format, which requires Adobe Acrobat software. The Brewers of Europe Web site is described separately in Altis. health heart diseases alcoholic beverages beers ... What is an Atrial Septal Defect ? The two upper chambers of the heart are called the right and left atrium. They are separated by a "wall" , called the ATRIAL SEPTUM. Sometimes, this "wall" is not complete. There is a HOLE in it. This hole is called an Atrial Septal Defect - or ASD , in short ! ASD's may be large or small, single or multiple. The heart may be normal in all other ways, or there may be other defects too. http://www.bharatonline.com/heart/htcod6.html What is a Ventricular Septal Defect? I have discussed atrial septal defects before. Well, ventricular septal defects - also called VSD - are similar. A VSD is a "hole" in the wall between the two lower chambers of the heart - the ventricle s . This hole may be small, medium-sized or large, and may be single or multiple. It may occur in different parts of the wall, and may sometimes be found along with other heart defects. http://www.bharatonline.com/heart/htcod7.html

The Lillehei Heart Institute is an inter-disciplinary research institute within the University of Minnesota’s Academic Health Center and Medical School. It was made possible by a generous gift from Kaye Lillehei, wife of C. Walton Lillehei, the “Father of Open Heart Surgery.” Dr. Lillehei received five degrees from the University of Minnesota and completed his training in surgery at this institution. He was on the faculty in the Department of Surgery from 1951 until 1967. During this pivotal epoch, Dr. Lillehei and the outstanding team assembled at the University of Minnesota pioneered the field of open heart surgery. The Lillehei Heart Institute is dedicated to honoring the past with the C. Walton Lillehei Museum, while supporting the future through its Lillehei Scholar Program. Annually, over $200,000 is awarded to the best and brightest students in the field of cardiovascular and respiratory research. LHI has been an integral partner with the Medical School in implementing its cardiovascular strategic plan. In 2002 and 2003, LHI has participated in the recruitment of four new faculty in cardiovascular science, and most currently (August 2003) provided leadership along with the Medical School, Stem Cell Institute, and BioMedical Engineering Institute to recruit Dr. Doris Taylor for the Medtronic Bakken Chair in Cardiovascular Repair. She will direct the Center for Cardiovascular Repair upon her arrival in November 2003.

NYCC projects are associated with some of the premier research and educational institutions in the United States. Past projects have included the pioneering use of the cardiac stent at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and research into stress reducing techniques such as biofeedback at Columbia. We are involved in educating young researchers through a unique project called UPTAM , in association with The Stevens Institute of Technology, and cardiologists of all ages in association with the New York chapter of the American College of Cardiology and the New York Cardiological Society.
One of our current projects, in association with Yale University School of Medicine, has dramatically changed the protocol for heart transplants. An important article, published in 1998 in The New England Journal of Medicine described how this new treatment protocol is more effective than conventional immunosuppression in preventing episodes of cardiac rejection. More importantly, new coronary artery disease in these hearts is markedly reduced after transplantation. Another project, in association with Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, uses high-speed MRI and CT techniques with the goal of producing non-invasive studies of the heart and associated arteries.

Tips On How To Have A Healthy Heart If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what would it take to avoid a heart surgeon? Would you believe a good vitamin + mineral supplement and some omega-3 oil (canola, flax, fish) ? Add a diet naturally high in fiber but low in processed food and hydrogenation hardened fat. Maintain a good lifestyle (don't smoke, control waist size, some exercise and manage stress well) and you will improve your general health, and prevent or help heart disease. This website looks at the food, supplement and prevention side of the picture. Nutrition in medicine is my long-term interest, not my job, so this site doesn't generate money or sell anything. You'll find tips and info that may well improve your health, your "distance to disease". Science shows that a healthy diet is one with relatively unprocessed foods, with veggies and fruits, and with rice or grains that retain much of their original kernel- structure . Those are the foods that became scarce in Western diets. If you can't recognize part of the original food, the item is processed or refined. Some fresh eggs, liver or fish are probably also vital for most of us.
