There are two private rooms in Intermediate care and both were empty when we made the transfer from CCU. All the rooms are the same size, so that meant that a semi-private room gave you half the space of a private. As David, who is an architect, noted, this was equivalent to the size of a prison cell. I was spending about 12 hours a day at the hospital and had assumed the responsibility of David's non-medical care - changing his sheets several times a day when he sweat through them, staking out the least threadbare patient gowns on the laundry cart, scrubbing his bathroom, bathing him, and bringing in takeout food from the neighborhood for our meals together. This meant that there were two of us sharing his half of the room. A private room seemed like more of a necessity than an extravagance. David was still too weak to complain, or even much care where he was, but I was getting annoyed. Surely hospitals have noticed that their staff is overworked, so shouldn't they be reasonably attentive to the requests of a patient who comes equipped with his own full-time maid. They can't have overlooked the fact that their budgets are shrinking while their expenses are rising. On the day David was transferred out of CCU we were told that when he left the hospital he'd have to look elsewhere for a cardiac rehab program because the one at Lenox Hill had closed six months ago due to budget cuts. So it would be reasonable to think that they'd jump on the opportunity to fill a more expensive private room for a week. But reason didn't seem to be part of the equation.

Altitude blamed for cleric's heart attack By Jean Torkelson, Rocky Mountain News
April 20, 2004
Colorado's altitude is being blamed, in part, for a heart attack suffered Sunday night by a visiting head of a branch of Russian Orthodoxy. The Metropolitan Valentine was rushed by ambulance from an Orthodox monastery in Buena Vista to Rocky Mountain Medical Center in Salida. Advertisement GetAd('31', false, 'c1', 250, 250, 'RELIGION_ARTICLE_DETAIL', ''); He was transferred Monday morning to Penrose Community Hospital in Colorado Springs and by late afternoon was being evaluated for surgery, according to his local hosts. "The doctors think it (may) be too serious to delay any longer," said Bishop Gregory, head of the Colorado region for the Russian Orthodox Autonomous Church in America, who hosted the visit. Orthodox leaders usually are identified by one name only. Metropolitan is the honorary title given a head of the orthodox church. He said doctors surmised that the metropolitan's condition was worsened by the 9,000-foot altitude of the monastery, called Dormition Skete.

Heart disease is the nation's number one cause of death, and about half the deaths from heart disease are from heart attacks. Learn to recognize these signs:
  • Uncomfortable pressure or pain in your chest that lasts for more than a few minutes.
  • Discomfort in jaw, neck, shoulders, or back.
  • Severe stomach discomfort or indigestion.
  • Light-headedness, fainting, dizziness or nausea.
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • Unexplained anxiety, weakness or fatigue.
  • Palpitations (increased heart rate), cold sweat or paleness.

Half of all people having a heart attack wait
more than two hours before getting help. You don't need to experience all of these symptoms to be having a heart attack.
Remember the three little numbers that can save your life - 911. If you have any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. In many cases, doctors can reverse the damage of a heart attack if treatment is given soon enough.

Buying life insurance after a heart attack
Insure.com Heart attacks raise a red flag for life insurance companies. Yet, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be denied a policy or pay sky-high premiums if you answer "yes" when asked about heart disease on your life insurance application.
"We are able to offer an insurance policy to the vast majority of people with a history of heart disease." Depending on the severity of your heart disease and the steps you've taken to treat it, you might get a life insurance policy with affordable rates. "We spend our lives underwriting diseases," says Dr. Robert Gleeson, a vice president and medical underwriter at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. "And, as an industry, we've had a lot of experience with coronary disease." According to Gleeson, over time people who have had heart attacks, and other forms of heart disease, tend to have predictable life expectancy rates, and the more predictable your life, the more willing insurers will be to sell you a life insurance policy.

February 13, 2001 Huntsville, AL, USA They can fetch your slippers and bring you the newspaper, but could you ever imagine that a dog would be able to rescue you from a heart attack? Mike Lingenfelter of Huntsville knows it; his golden retriever Dakota has the amazing ability to sniff out an impending myocardial infarction well before it hits. Mr. Lingenfelter suffers from severe angina, an inflammation of the muscles surrounding the heart, a condition that frequently results in fatality. Mr. Lingenfelter himself had two heart attacks in 1992. Then along came Dakota. Dakota's story is no less difficult; he had been chained to a cow spike in a Texas yard and had been dying of heartworms when he was rescued by the Delta Society several years ago. Vets struggled to revive Dakota, even after his own heart had stopped beating. Once recovered, Dakota was trained as a service dog, whose initial job was simply to encourage his owner to exercise by nudging and pestering, if his owner becomes sedentary for too long. In 1995, Dakota was presented to Mike Lingenfelter by the Greater Houston Golden Retriever Society.

What You Need To Know
Taking Aspirin to Lower Your Risk of Heart Attack
If you are at risk for a heart attack, taking aspirin every day or every other day can lower your risk.
How Do I Know if I Am At Higher Risk for A Heart Attack?
You may be at higher risk for a heart attack if you can say yes to any of the following:
  • I am a man over 40. I am a woman past menopause. I smoke. I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease.
If you answered " Yes " to any of these, talk to your doctor or nurse about whether taking aspirin is right for you.
Is Aspirin Safe?
For most people, taking aspirin is safe. But for some people, aspirin can increase the chance of bleeding in the stomach or intestines and may cause a small increase in some kinds of stroke. For that reason, taking aspirin is not the right choice for everyone. The higher your risk of heart disease, the more you have to gain by taking aspirin.
What Should I Do?
Ask your doctor or nurse about taking aspirin. They can help you decide:
  • Whether to take aspirin.

And Finally

T HANKS FOR dropping by my web site. At the age of 43 I had a heart attack, three years later in 2000 I had a quadruple heart bypass operation so should I roll over and give in to heart disease. The answer yes would have been easy, instead I changed my diet and my lifestyle. I am now addressing my working life. No more long hours, more time at home and more time away on holiday.
I went back to work, went back to some old ways and now wish I hadn’t. I ended up being very stressed and had some old symptoms returning. So I don’t intend to do that again and now I want to concentrate on having some quality time doing what I need to do. Part of quality to me is the Costa Del Sol in Spain and I have been several times, Maybe I will end up there who knows?
Here you will see links to some apartments I can recommend them follow the link.
Make sure most of all that you make time for you and your family as part of your recovery and you will get better and stay better if you make those life changes.

Learn the Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack
It's important if to seek treatment immediately. you think you might be experiencing heart attack symptoms. "Some experience the onset of a heart attack as a sharp radiating pain across their chest and back, while others feel more of a heavy pressure in their chest," said Robert Shesser, M.D., Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University Hospital. "For each person it's different... that's why everyone needs to become familiar with all the symptoms of a heart attack." Common symptoms include:
  • Pain in the chest
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
Time can be critical. Waiting too long before going to the emergency department may increase the amount of heart damage. That's why it's important to go immediately to your nearest emergency room or call 911. According to Shesser, seeking immediate treatment can make a big difference in the quality of life after recovery.
