What is a Heart Attack?
It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, since we are looking at preventing and reversing heart attack and stroke it is appropriate that we actually present a series of diagrams which will show us what these terms really mean. A heart attack , or acute myocardial infarction, implies the death of part of the heart's left ventricle due to a lack or marked deficiency in the heart's blood supply. In the United States, nearly 300,000 persons who die annually from heart attacks do so suddenly, prior to hospitalization. Their deaths are attributed to a suddenly ineffectual pumping action of the heart because of rhythm abnormalities (ventricular fibrillation or cardiac standstill). The main cause for the death of the heart muscle is deficient supply of oxygenated blood from the coronary arteries. The main reason for this is atherosclerosis . In some cases, however, death occurs from coronary thrombosis embolism , or spasm are less frequent causes.
How Does a Heart Attack Happen?
In Diagram 1 we see a normal heart. Blood enters from the body. As the blood has circulated throughout the body its live giving nutrients and oxygen have been used up. Blood now enters into the right side of the heart a chamber of the heart known as the Right Atrium with the next beat of the heart it is pumped into the Right Ventricle. From here the blood is sent out from the heart into the lungs where it picks up life giving oxygen. Oxygenated blood returns to the heart and eneters into the Left Atrium where in the next heart beat it is pumped into the Left Ventricle. It is in the muscluar walls of the left ventricle where heart attacks most commonly occur. When the heart is operating nnormally it will immediately pump the blood in the left ventricle out of the heart to the rest of the body. This process is repeated over and over 60 to 80 times a minute as long as we live.

WASHINGTON (AP) A 55-year-old National Guardsman died this week from a heart attack, the Pentagon said Friday, in the third such death that followed a smallpox vaccination. The Defense Department is joining the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in deferring people with heart disease from the vaccinations until any possible relationship can be investigated, said Dr. Bill Winkenwerder, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs. In Florida, where a health worker died this week after a heart attack, officials suspended their smallpox vaccination program while the issue is investigated. New York put its program on hold early this week.

You can walk into any pharmacy, grocery or convenience store and buy aspirin without a prescription. The Drug Facts label on medication products, will help you choose aspirin for relieving headache, pain, swelling, or fever. The Drug Facts label also gives directions that will help you use the aspirin so that it is safe and effective. But what about using aspirin for a different use, time period, or in a manner that is not listed on the label? For example, using aspirin to lower the risk of heart attack and clot-related strokes. In these cases, the labeling information is not there to help you with how to choose and how to use the medicine safely. Since you don't have the labeling directions to help you, you need the medical knowledge of your doctor, nurse practitioner or other health professional.

Psychology Helps After a Heart Attack
Psychologists' interventions enhance a heart-attack patient's recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence.
John worked hard to develop his family business and was proud of it. But after he had a heart attack, his wife, Kathy, took over the family business and his son quit college and moved home. These gestures were meant to help John recuperate, but instead he became increasingly angry and depressed. His refusal to follow medical recommendations led to another heart attack, and he died.
Studies show that early psychological intervention could have helped John and his family, according to psychologist Wayne Sotile, PhD.
In the United States, 4,000 people have a heart attack every dayone in five of whom are under age 60. And despite growing evidence that psychologists can help heart attack victims, only 12 percent of the medical facilities that treat cardiac disease offer psychological services to patients.
Psychologists, heart patients
Research confirms that psychologists have the expertise to help people recover from or prevent heart attacks and to avoid future health problems. "For too long in our society, a heart attack was thought of as an end," said former APA President Dorothy W. Cantor, PsyD. "Today we should think of heart attacks as the beginning of a new lifestyle for the patient."
The reason some people recover and lead productive lives while others don't lies in the relationship between health and behavior, Cantor said.

WASHINGTON (AP) The first gene linked directly to heart attacks has been isolated from an extended Iowa family that has been plagued for generations with rampant coronary artery disease. The gene, called MEF2A, plays a role in protecting the artery walls from building up plaque that can impede blood flow and lead to heart attacks, said Dr. Eric J. Topol of the Cleveland Clinic, head of a team that discovered the gene. "This is the first heart attack gene," said Topol. "Everyone who has this gene mutation is destined to have the disease. If you don't have this gene in this family, you appear to free from developing this disease." A report on the discovery Friday was in the journal Science.

AFTER HEART ATTACK By Aaron Levin, Staff Writer
Health Behavior News Service A heart attack can make anyone anxious, but women experience greater anxiety than men do after heart attacks, a pattern that is consistent across four continents, a new study notes. The higher level of anxiety among women is not connected to geography, to demographic factors like marital status and education or to medical condition, according to a report published in the July issue of Psychosomatic Medicine Moser says that difference was enough to see variations between men and women in the medical complications they experienced. And, she notes, that relationship held regardless of where patients lived. This finding confirmed earlier studies that showed no wide cross-cultural differences in the presence of depression and anxiety disorders. However, the researchers also found that both men and women under age 60 reported higher levels of anxiety than those older than 60. The study was supported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Sigma Theta Tau Research Grant, the Bennett-Puritan AACN Mentorship; Sigma Theta Tau; and the Pacific Rim Grant.

Heart Attack
(Myocardial Infarction)
What is a heart attack?
A heart attack (myocardial infarction) is the death of heart muscle due to the loss of blood supply. Usually, the loss of blood supply is caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery(an artery that supplies blood to the heart muscle) by a blood clot.
What are the features of a heart attack?
Pain: is the cardinal symptom of a heart attack. The pain is often described as a tightness or heaviness in the chest. It is often severe enough to be the worst pain that can be experienced. the usual location of the pain is in the center of the chest but it frequently radiates to the left arm or the jaw.
Anxiety: fear of impending death.
Breathlessness,
Nausea and vomiting,
Sweating, pallor and a fast pulse. Sudden death: loss of blood supply disturbs the orderly transmission of electrical impulses in the heart and as a result the heart stops to effectively pump blood. Permanent brain damage and death can occur unless oxygenated blood flow is restored within five minutes. Approximately 40% of people suffering a heart attack die before reaching to the hospital. What causes a heart attack?

Six-month public smoking ban slashes heart attack rate in community
In the first study of its kind, researchers have found that the number of heart attack victims admitted to a regional hospital dropped by nearly 60 percent during the first six months that a smoke-free ordinance was in effect in the area. The study's authors attribute much of the sharp decline in acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) to a near-elimination of the rapid and harmful effects of secondhand smoke on blood platelets and the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Damage to these and other functions increases the likelihood and seriousness of a cardiovascular "event," they note. In addition, smoke-free environments encourage smokers to stop or reduce smoking, which also reduces heart attack risk, they point out. The findings were reported at the scientific sessions of the American College of Cardiology meeting in Chicago. The study took place in Helena, Montana, where a smoke-free ordinance went into effect June 5, 2002 and was suspended in a legal challenge six months later. One hospital – St. Peter's Community Hospital – serves almost all cardiac patients in the region, with a population of 65,913.

Chart Info UK: 2 (42 weeks on chart), USA: 12 (32 weeks on chart), Japan: 23 (34 weeks on chart) Sheer Heart Attack is the first of what could be called Queen’s ‘rite of passage’ or ‘diode’ albums – the ones that split the fan base irrevocably into separate directions, so that some would continue with them no further, while others came onboard for the first time, joining those (such as myself) thrilled to see another branch appear on the Queen tree. Queen was a typical first album, full of promise and good songwriting - most bands work for years before signing an album deal, meaning that if it comes the first recording contains work that has been written, performed and therefore refined over a long period of time. The second album often feeds off this initial momentum as well, but Queen II is more ambitious: it takes the band in new directions altogether, as they discover for the first time the unique capabilities of the studio.
