Secondhand Smoke Linked to Increased Heart Attack Rate
By John Schwartz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 20, 1997; Page A02 High exposure to secondhand smoke nearly doubles a woman's risk of having a heart attack, according to the largest study ever conducted on the issue. The study, being published today, provides strong new evidence supporting the hotly disputed claim that secondhand smoke poses a major health risk, and could play an important role in the first class-action lawsuit against tobacco companies over secondhand smoke, which is scheduled to begin in Florida on June 2. Researchers asked 32,000 nurses in a large ongoing study to place themselves in one of three categories: no exposure to secondhand smoke, occasional exposure, and regular exposure. The researchers then monitored the nurses' health during the 10 years between 1982 and 1992, and found evidence of chronic heart disease in 152 cases, including 25 fatal heart attacks. The researchers estimated the relative risks of coronary heart disease for those claiming regular exposure to secondhand smoke at 1.91 times that of women not exposed to tobacco smoke at home or work. Women claiming occasional exposure were 1.58 times more likely to suffer from heart disease than those not exposed.

Orville sold his interest in the Wright Company in 1915 and settled into the role of aviation elder statesman and national folk hero. He spent much of the remaining 33 years of his life upholding the reputation he and Wilbur had earned. In 1916 Orville finally gave up the lease on the modest bicycle shop in which he and Wilbur did their pioneering aeronautical work and moved into a new laboratory he had built nearby. He served on many government aeronautical boards and commissions and was a consultant with several private aircraft companies. He received 11 honorary degrees from universities in Europe and the United States, as well as dozens of medals and awards. Study: Light drinking may cut stroke risk
Story Tools RELATED Interactive: Guidelines for stroke prevention American Stroke Association National Stroke Association Journal of the American Medical Association (CNN) Studies have indicated that drinking alcohol in moderation can cut heart attack risks, and new research supports the theory that the same holds true for preventing strokes. "Light to moderate alcohol consumption may be protective against ... stroke while heavy alcohol consumption increases the risk," said Kristi Reynolds, a doctoral student at Tulane University and co-author of the study, which is published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association. Tulane University researchers reviewed 35 studies from 1983 to 2002 and concluded that one to two drinks a day is associated with an almost 30 percent lower risk of stroke, the third leading cause of death in the United States. But the findings don't mean the public should start an alcohol habit. The research also found that heavy drinkers increased their risk of stroke by more than 60 percent, canceling out any health benefits of alcohol.

Heart Infocenter Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) How To Detect A Heart Attack The first hour of a heart attack is known as the "golden hour." If you get help during that first hour, your chances of recovery are greatly improved. Yet many people hesitate to get help when they first experience symptoms. They're afraid of the embarrassment of going to the emergency room and finding that nothing is wrong. So, it is important that you know the symptoms that may indicate that a heart attack is in progress. Many of the symptoms of heart attack can be brought on by digestive disturbances or other less serious conditions. But only sophisticated medical tests can determine for sure if you're having a heart attack. Heart attacks may vary from person to person, and from heart attack to heart attack. Women, for example, may experience "atypical' symptoms such as pain between the shoulder blades rather than crushing chest pain. This may result in them delaying seeking treatment. That is a great mistake. Heart attack is one instance where getting treatment promptly can mean the difference between life and death. If you are in doubt, err on the side of being more cautious and go to the emergency room and get yourself checked. We will try to describe some of the most common characteristics of heart attack here. Before that we will introduce the other pain called angina which is often precursor to a heart attack.

Looks at angina pectoris and explains what it is, the heart attack risks, diagnosis, treatment and the types.
http://www.muschealth.com/Cardiac/anginap.htm
Angina Pectoris What is angina pectoris?
Angina pectoris (or simply angina) is recurring chest pain or discomfort that happens when some part of the heart does not receive enough blood. Angina is a symptom of coronary heart disease (CHD), which occurs when arteries that carry blood to the heart become narrowed and blocked due to atherosclerosis. What are the symptoms of angina pectoris?
Angina pectoris occurs when the heart muscle (myocardium) does the adequate amount of blood it needs for a given level of work (Insufficient blood supply is called ischemia.). The following are the most common symptoms of angina. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • a pressing, squeezing, or crushing pain, usually in the chest under the breast bone pain radiating in the arms, shoulders, jaw, neck, and/or back chest pain usually begins with physical exertion, although, other triggers include emotional stress, extreme cold and heat, heavy meals, excessive alcohol consumption, and cigarette smoking chest pain associated with angina is usually relieved within a few minutes by resting or by taking prescribed cardiac medication

Heart Attack Risk Factors What risk factors cannot be changed?
What risk factors can I control?

Where can I get more information?
There are several risk factors that increase your chance of having a heart attack . Some can be changed while others are built-in such as age, sex and family history of heart disease. What risk factors cannot be changed?
Males are at higher risk for heart attack than females. The older you get, the more susceptible you are to having a heart attack. If heart disease runs in your family, particularly among your father, mother, brother or sister, your chances of having a heart attack are also increased. This makes reducing the factors that can be changed even more important. What risk factors can I control?
These include cigarette smoking high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol . Smoking directly boosts your risk of having a heart attack. The more you smoke the greater your risk. High blood pressure also increases your risk by causing the heart to enlarge and weaken. Depending on your individual situation, medication, diet and exercise may help keep your blood pressure in the normal range. Blood cholesterol should also be kept within the normal limits because cholesterol can build up on the walls of the arteries and reduce blood flow to the heart. In addition, you should exercise and keep your weight under control. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is a good way to reduce your risk of heart attack, and you will probably feel better in the long run.

HEART ATTACK
A heart attack occurs when there is a blockage in one of the coronary
arteries and the blood supply to a part of the heart is cut off. This lack of
blood can damage the heart. A heart attack is sometimes referred to as
myocardial infarction.
Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease, or atherosclerosis is a disease process that is
the most common cause of a heart attack. This disease occurs when the
smooth inner lining of the coronary arteries becomes damaged and
roughened, and fatty matter (sometimes called plaque) accumulates. As
plaque continues to build-up the arteries become increasingly narrowed and hard, which restricts blood flow to the heart muscle. As atherosclerosis progresses, platelets (cells in the blood that aid clotting) can easily stick to the roughened vessel wall. This can cause small clots to form which will also block blood flow to the heart muscle. Occasionally diseased arteries have spasms (vasospasms) which further narrow the artery and limit blood flow as well. Angina The most common symptom of a heart attack is angina, often referred to

Cocaine heightens heart attack risk, research shows
May 31, 1999 Web posted at: 4:20 p.m. EDT (2020 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) Within the first hour of taking cocaine, the risk of having a heart attack jumps nearly 24 times, according to a new study that strengthens the suspected relationship between the illegal drug and heart disease. Cocaine may raise the risk of heart attacks by boosting blood pressure and heart rate and increasing the contraction of the left ventricle or pumping chamber in the heart, according to Monday's issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. "Cocaine use, in addition to other adverse health effects, can acutely and immediately trigger the onset of heart attacks with a great increase in risk," said researcher Dr. Murray Mittleman of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. "This is a risk that just may not be worth taking."

January, 2003 Download this factsheet Heart attacks are the most common cause of death in the UK. Each year there are about 300,000 new heart attacks, which are fatal in 50% of cases. A heart attack is the result of a blockage in one of the coronary arteries carrying oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. When the blood supply is cut off, a part of the heart muscle dies - or infarcts. A heart attack is also known as a myocardial infarction (MI), coronary thrombosis or, simply "a coronary".
    Causes of a heart attack
The underlying cause of most heart attacks is atherosclerosis, a disease of the coronary arteries that usually develops over many years. Atherosclerosis involves the formation of fatty deposits (plaques) on the walls of the coronary arteries. These plaques can rupture, releasing substances that cause blood flowing in the coronary artery to clot. Combined, the plaque and blood clot (thrombus) can block the coronary artery altogether, resulting in the symptoms of heart attack.

These symptoms are usually worse < on exertion and by excitement. Unlike a true "heart attack" the pain usually is better > when resting. Angina is caused by arteriosclerosis that has diminished the flow of blood to the muscle. A heart attacks occur when the heart muscle itself has been damaged by a lack of oxygen. This usually happens when one of the arteries leading to the heart is block by a blood clot (coronary thrombosis). This results in cardiac infarction, which is the dead of part of the heart muscles. The victim usually experiences pain in the center of the chest that radiates down both of the arms and into the neck and jaw, breathlessness, dizziness, sweats, chills and nausea. The pain are sometimes described as being crushing, agonizing, bursting or viselike. In severe case the individual will stop breathing, collapse and loss consciousness. The action taken in the first 3 minutes may make the difference between life and death. Apply CPR immediately (refer) and call the emergency. When the patient begins to breath place the individual in recovery position and give a remedy for asphyxia as needed. Materia Medica ACONITE (3).
