Heart attack more likely to kill women than men, study says
July 26, 1999 Web posted at: 5:48 PM EDT (2148 GMT) By Hacsi Horvath (WebMD) Younger women have a greater chance of dying of a heart attack than men, researchers have found. The study, published in this week's The New England Journal of Medicine, has revealed that of men and women younger than 50 years of age who suffered a heart attack, women were twice as likely to die from that heart attack. Three percent of the men in the study and 6 percent of the women died, reported lead author Dr. Viola of the Yale University School of Medicine and collaborating scientists from several major research hospitals. The difference in the number of deaths was less among older people. For example, 144 out of every 1,000 men aged 70 to 74 died of a heart attack; about 166 out of every 1,000 women in the same age group died, the results showed.

By Marc Kaufman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, April 23, 2004; Page A01 For the first time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning people at risk of heart disease to avoid all buildings and gathering places that allow indoor smoking. The CDC disclosed its new advisory in a commentary to a study published in the British Medical Journal yesterday, saying doctors need to warn people with heart problems that secondhand smoke can significantly increase their risk of a heart attack. The agency said that as little as 30 minutes' exposure can have a serious and even lethal effect. The commentary accompanied a study showing that the number of heart attacks in Helena, Mont., decreased substantially after the city banned indoor smoking, then rose quickly to its former level after the law was struck down in court. That study found that during the six-month period in 2002 when the ban was in effect, the number of heart attacks reported by Helena's heart hospital fell by 40 percent.

Medical field split on smallpox vaccine NEW GUIDELINES Under the new, temporary guidelines, people who have been diagnosed with serious heart disease such as coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, previous heart attack and angina are being told not to get the vaccine. ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Federal health authorities Thursday announced that a second health-care worker who had recently been inoculated against smallpox has died, but they said they were not sure whether the vaccination played any role. Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified the fatality as a 57-year-old woman who died Wednesday 10 days after suffering a heart attack, and 17 days after being inoculated against smallpox. The woman, who had a history of heart disease and high blood pressure, developed difficulty breathing and dehydration six days after receiving a smallpox vaccination, said Dr. Walter Orenstein, director of the CDC's National Immunization Program.

Add up all of those who died from the four next most common causes (cancers, accidents, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes) and you still don't top the heart disease body count. Researchers have made great progress in understanding the disease and its risk factors, but we still can't predict who will get coronary heart disease, the most common form, caused by decreasing blood flow to the heart because of a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. When this happens, you're often headed for a heart attack. • As many as one of every five heart attacks occurs among apparently healthy individuals who have none of the major risk factors: smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Pill seen as advance for 'mild heart attack'
March 19, 2001 Web posted at: 11:58 a.m. EST (1658 GMT) By Rhonda Rowland and Debra Goldschmidt CNN Medical Unit ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) A pink pill called Plavix could change the way people with chest pains are treated and save thousands of lives, researchers told a meeting of the American College of Cardiology Monday. These severe chest pains unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, also known as "mild heart attack" are the most common reason that people with heart problems go to the hospital. Plavix, also known as clopidegrel, is an anti-platelet drug that works similar to aspirin. "We studied patients with what's called acute coronary syndromes," said Dr. Shamir Mehta, a cardiologist with McMasters University. "These are patients who have chest pain, but it's not an actual heart attack. Although they're at risk of having a major heart attack within the next several days or the next year." The CURE (Clopidogrel in Unstable Angina to Prevent Recurrent Ischemic Events) trial found the drug could reduce further heart problems by 20 percent. Researchers said deaths, heart attacks and strokes could be reduced by nearly 100,000 if patients with acute coronary syndromes take both aspirin and Plavix. The study included 12,562 patients in 28 countries.

Apr 19, 8:55 AM (ET)
CHICAGO (Reuters) - McDonald's Corp. (MCD.N) Chairman and Chief Executive Jim Cantalupo, who helped turned the company around with a focus on better food and service, died on Monday of an apparent heart attack, the company said. Cantalupo, 60, died in Orlando, Florida, where he was attending a McDonald's meeting for its restaurant owners and operators. The world's largest restaurant chain could not immediately say who was taking over Cantalupo's responsibilities. "We're focusing on Mr. Cantalupo and his family," McDonald's spokeswoman Anna Rozenich, said. The news sent the stock of the Oak Brook, Illinois, company down 3 percent in premarket trading, and was seen pulling the Dow Jones industrial average lower at the start of trading. Cantalupo, a former vice chairman and president of the company, was brought back to lead McDonald's in January 2003, when the company was struggling to cope with falling profit in a saturated hamburger market, outbreaks of mad cow disease and poor service. In little over a year, he had helped turn the company around with a focus on improving operations and menu offerings. New items like entree-sized salads and all-white-meat chicken nuggets helped McDonald's post the highest sales gain in 30 years at U.S. restaurants open more than a year in February.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) The powerful drugs that beat back the AIDS virus may have a deadly drawback they may increase the risk of heart attack, according to a study in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. However the findings may not be the final answer on whether the AIDS virus, HIV, or the drugs used to treat it, heighten the odds of heart problems. Another study published in the Journal earlier this year suggested that heart disease rates were not higher among people taking the latest HIV treatments. Smaller studies had suggested that the risk was real. The largest studies may have reached different conclusions because neither included a control group of uninfected people, said Peter Sklar and Henry Masur in an editorial in the Journal.
