Barbara, Sinatra's wife of 20 years, and other family members were with him when he died, she added. The spokeswoman said a private funeral was planned. Sinatra has not been seen in public since a heart attack in January 1997, and had been in and out of the hospital several times since then. His family had occasionally acknowledged he was ill but denied rumours that he was on his death bed. The BBC's Richard Anthony Baker remembers the man and the music (5'18") Regular updates by the Sinatra family on their Website, including photographs of the singer enjoying himself, helped show that he was battling on. In February the family used the Internet site to deny rumours that the star had inoperable cancer after he was taken to hospital for a series of tests amid reports that he had cancer of the bladder. American author Gore Vidal told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the singer had played a unique part in the life of his country. ... The heart is a complex, highly specialized muscle that contracts approximately 70 times each minute to pump blood to the head, arms, chest, abdomen, and legs. This pumping action requires oxygen, which is carried in the blood by specialized red blood cells. Three blood vessels, called the coronary arteries , supply the heart with blood and oxygen. Over time, plaques made of cholesterol and other substances can develop in these arteries and partially block the flow of blood. Occasionally, the surface of one of these plaques can burst or rupture. When this happens, a blood clot may form on top of the plaque, further blocking blood flow in the artery. If a blood clot becomes large enough, it can completely block the flow of blood through the coronary artery. This makes the heart muscle

What is a heart attack?
A heart attack occurs when there is a severe blockage in an artery that carries oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. The blockage is usually caused by the buildup of plaque (deposits of fat-like substances, or atherosclerosis ) along the walls of the arteries. The sudden lack of blood flow to the heart muscle deprives the heart of needed oxygen and nutrients. If the blockage is not opened quickly, the heart muscle is likely to suffer serious, permanent damage as areas of tissue die. The medical term for a heart attack is acute myocardial infarction . Acute means sudden, myo refers to muscle, and cardia refers to heart. The myocardium is the medical name for the heart muscle. Infarct means that (heart) tissue has been destroyed or killed because of the clogging of the blood vessels that supply oxygen to the heart.

Heart Disease Diagnosis Accurate. When used properly by a trained physician expert, the 3DMP Electrocardiogram (EKG) System can be an excellent aid to help physicians achieve an accuracy much greater than the conventional 12-lead EKG. In a like manner, a much greater accuracy from 3DMP can be obtained over other non-invasive or semi-invasive diagnostic modalities currently available on the market. Physicians and insurance companies have come to trust it for the early detection of mild to moderate disease and the early warning of severe disease stages. It presents the clinician with an impressive alternative to other, less effective means of coronary artery disease (CAD) diagnosis, for example: the thallium stress test, the standard EKG/signal average EKG (SAEKG), and the echocardiogram. Timely. Time is a critical factor when it comes to heart diagnosis and treatment. 3DMP makes inexpensive, accurate, diagnostic aid possible within half an hour. Non-invasive. The 3DMP EKG system is harmless and does not require any surgery, medications, or painful procedures.

Daily Wine News > Current Headlines Frequent Drinking Lowers Chance of Heart Attack, Study Shows Posted: Friday, January 10, 2003 By Jacob Gaffney Men who drink at least three times a week may be less likely to develop heart disease than are nondrinkers and less-frequent drinkers regardless of whether they prefer beer, wine or spirits, according to a new study from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption can help prevent heart disease, but the roles of drinking patterns and type of beverage were unclear. The latest research indicates that how often you drink may be more important than how much or what you drink. The findings "imply that ethanol, per se, is the active agent" in reducing heart disease, said lead researcher Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, who had conducted an earlier study that concluded that moderate consumption of alcohol after a heart attack lowered the chances of having another.

Treating a Heart Attack
If an electrocardiogram (EKG) shows that you are having a heart attack, a number of medications can be used to assist the heart. Here is a brief description of some of the more common medications used to treat a heart attack. Nitroglycerin Nitroglycerin dilates the vessels that supply blood to the heart. This medication, often administered sublingually (under the tongue), works quickly to reduce or relieve chest pain. Nitroglycerin also can be administered intravenously so that it works more quickly. A patient who uses nitroglycerin tablets at home is usually instructed to take a tablet as soon as there is chest pain. The pills can be repeated at five-minute intervals for a total of three tablets. If chest pain is still present following three doses of nitroglycerin, the patient should go to the nearest hospital. Thrombolytic agents These are the newest medications available to treat a heart attack. Thrombolytics or "clot busters," as they are often called, are given intravenously in an attempt to dissolve the blood clot that is causing the heart attack. When given early on, during the first hours of a heart attack, thrombolytics can save heart muscle that would otherwise be destroyed during a heart attack. This is why you should not delay treatment for chest pain. Your physician will determine if you can get this treatment, since some pre-existing medical conditions may prevent you from receiving thrombolytic agents. Emergency angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting procedures are often carried out instead of using thrombolytic agents.

What is a heart attack? Heart attacks result from blood vessel disease in the heart. Coronary heart disease (CHD), sometimes referred to as coronary artery disease (CAD), are more general names for heart attack (and angina). A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle itself (the myocardium) is severely reduced or stopped. This occurs when one of the coronary arteries (the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle) is blocked by an obstruction, often plaque due to atherosclerosis. A heart attack also can be caused by a blood clot lodged in a coronary artery. Such an event is sometimes called a coronary thrombosis or coro- nary occlusion. If the blood supply is cut off drastically or for a long time, muscle cells suffer irreversible injury and die. Disability or death can result, depending on how much heart muscle is damaged.

Something told me I was in trouble," he said. Herb went to a hospital in New York City, his home, and received the best treatment available. "I had confidence that my doctor would know what should be done, and that I would get top-notch care. It was a quiet confidence," Danska said. Danska was luckier than many. According to a study in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association, heart attack treatments can vary greatly depending on where in the United States the victim lives. "For the most part, patients treated in the Northeast received appropriate treatment more frequently than patients in some of the other regions around the country," said Dr. David Vorchheimer, a cardiologist at New York City's Mount Sinai-NYU Medical Center.

Time to read the signs: Symptoms of heart attacks in women
May 12, 1999 Web posted at: 2:36 PM EDT (1836 GMT) In this story: Know the signs What to do Happy ending RELATEDS By Michelle Holcenberg (WebMD) Four years ago Nancy Loving had never heard the phrase "women and heart disease," despite having done public relations work for a number of health campaigns. That changed the day she woke up at 4 a.m. feeling light-headed and clammy. She might have passed it off as a bout of the flu if it hadn't been for the tremendous pain in her upper back. Thankfully she read the pain as a warning sign and had her teenage daughter drive her to the emergency room. When Loving arrived at the hospital, the doctor realized she was having a heart attack and immediately administered a blood clot-busting drug. At 48 she'd had no previous symptoms of heart disease, but all the warning signs were there she smoked, was overweight, got little exercise, and had a stressful job and a family history of heart attacks. And at the hospital she found out her cholesterol was at 313, well above the healthy range.
