Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are the only non-dangerous headache that strike men more often than women. (Read about " Headaches ") It's a ratio of about five to one, according to the National Headache Foundation (NHF). It's estimated that less than one percent of the population suffers from cluster headaches, most between the ages of 20 to 45. The American Council for Headache Education (ACHE) says cluster headaches arrive without warning, grow in intensity in 10 to 15 minutes and usually last 30 to 45 minutes. Once it goes away however, that isn't the end of it. NHF says that most people have up to four headaches a day when they are having cluster headaches. Often the headaches will start either early in the morning or at night, waking the person up. Clusters headaches often occur in the spring and fall, so many people associate them with allergy season, according to NHF. Symptoms and causes Cluster headaches are almost always on one side of the head. Often they start around the eye and the temple. The pain is described by many terms, such as:
  • stabbing
  • burning
  • throbbing
Most victims say they can not sit still and will rock or even hit their head against something.

But what will shock you is how little medicine it took to get him in trouble. Peterson's problems started in high school with migraine headaches that hit him a couple of times a week. Daily Habit Can Trigger Serious Health Problems Initially, Peterson was able to manage his headaches by taking two Excedrin just two to three times a week. But that was enough to lead to rebound headaches. Soon, Eric was taking the pain relievers every day, which was very bad for both his head ... and his stomach. Peterson's health problems became painfully clear last summer at a Chicago Cubs game. SEATTLE (CNN) A trade meeting of 134 nations this Tuesday threatens to create political headaches for President Clinton and the presidential campaign of Vice President Al Gore In this story:
Unions plan protests

Congressman wants Castro indicted

Thorny subjects such as Cuba, China and labor relations all may intersect when the World Trade Organization opens its four-day conference in Seattle. Cuban President Fidel Castro is considering attending the WTO conference, where he might again use the world stage to castigate the Clinton administration for the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba. With few exceptions, the nations represented in Seattle share Castro's view that the embargo, now almost four decades old, should be lifted. And Chinese trade minister Shi Guangsheng announced Saturday his intention to join the meeting on the sidelines.
Unions plan protest
Thousands of U.S. union workers plan to be in Seattle Tuesday to protest the recent trade agreement between Beijing and Washington.

I have been taking 25 mg Amitriptyline and 120 mg Verapamil daily for migraine management for about 2 months now. Do either of these medications stimulate weight gain?
Amitriptyline (trade name Elavil or Endep) is an antidepressant. It increases your appetite for carbohydrates and may increase your need for riboflavin above your RDA, which is 1.3 mg for adult females and 1.7 mg for adult males. You should avoid alcohol and limit caffeine. Some other effects are possibly nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, altered taste, loss of appetite, increased or decreased weight, increased or decreased blood glucose. I know many of these are contradictory, but are provided as significant. Verapamil (trade name Calan or Isoptin) regulates irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia). It does not have any effect on your food intake nor should it effect your weight unless you already have problems with fluid retention because of your heart's ability as a pump. You should avoid alcohol as well with this medication. Constipation may be a problem associated with taking this prescription. Since this is a calcium channel blocker, calcium supplements may decrease the effect of this drug. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist.
My husband experienced a bout with bad headaches last July. After months, they finally went away. He constantly "diets", eats a lot of Snack Well products, drinks 0% fat milk and fruit and 1 or 2 diet cokes per day. Has had every test for headaches, outside of allergy tests. After several months of being headache free, he has again started with severe headaches. I can't convince him to see his doctor, because all tests showed nothing "wrong".

HEADACHES INTRODUCTION. The most common pain complaint of civilized man, headache pain may be mild and of short duration, or it can be severe enough to incapacitate the sufferer totally. Fortunately, the majority of headaches do not have a serious cause. In fact, chronic headaches are rarely caused by organic diseases such as brain tumors. Headache is one of the most common complaints of those who suffer with various types of TMJ problems. The first well-known classification of headache pain was proposed in 1962 by the Ad Hoc Committee on Classification of Headache of the National Institute of Neurolgical Diseases and Blindness. This committee divided headache pain into three (3) basic categories: (1) vascular headaces; (2) traction-inflammatory headaches; and, (3) muscle contraction headaches. Because there are certainly more than three main types of headaches, in 1987 the International Headache Society developed more specific criteria to provide greater uniformity and reproducibility in the diagnosis of headache. This new classification system divided headache pain into 13 different categories, with TMJ and facial pain falling into category number 11: Headache or facial pain associted with disorder of cranium, neck, eyes, nose, sinuses, teeth, mouth, or other facial or cranial structures.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) They are excruciating headaches that last for days and return at a moment's notice. Often, they surface in the teenage years and last through much of adulthood. It's a condition that has existed for centuries, doctors say. But only recently has it been given a name: "chronic daily headaches," or CDH, defined as migraines or neck- and head-squeezing tension headaches that are present 15 or more days each month. Some might think it sounds like just another excuse to skip school. But young people such as Rachel Gohmann, an 18-year-old college freshman from St. Cloud, Minnesota, know how serious the condition can be. Blinding headaches that often left her bedridden caused her to miss more than 100 days of her senior year of high school with her worst migraine lasting nearly a month.

    Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Creating a popular new computing approach always seems to bring with it a familiar catch-22: security issues. And Web services is no exception. Extensible Markup Language and XML-based protocols are rapidly becoming a common way for businesses to format and exchange corporate information. But even as those Web services technologies are becoming widespread, companies are not fully aware of the associated security vulnerabilitiesnor that most are not addressed by mainstream network protection systems, according to analysts. News.context
    What's new:
XML and Web services applications are becoming widely used by businesses, creating a fresh target for malicious attacks. Bottom line:
Right now, the risks of malicious attacks on XML and Web services are relatively contained, but once companies start using XML-based protocols more extensively, they need to reconsider how they are exposing their data and to what.

Factory flaws yield headaches for chipmakers
Last modified: April 24, 2004, 8:46 AM PDT By Reuters
For chipmakers, problems on the factory floor are increasingly turning into big headaches in the executive suite. Some of the world's biggest chipmakers have lost both money and time straightening out the extraordinarily complex process of turning microchip designs and discs of silicon into working electronics. The difficulties have only worsened as the industry adopts new design features smaller than the wavelength of light, while moving to larger silicon wafers that can produce more than twice as many chips as previous wafers. While those new technologies greatly increase the potential for churning out stacks of more powerful chips at lower costs, they have also thrown up hurdles that even the largest chipmakers have occasionally stumbled over. The most recent slip-up comes from IBM's $3 billion fabrication plant , or fab, in East Fishkill, N.Y. IBM executives have acknowledged that manufacturing problems at the plant contributed to a $150 million loss that the company's chip business had last quarter.

Nervous System Function Facts While the brain is the master controller, the nervous system also has local control points. For example, a burn reflex travels to and from the spinal cord so that you withdraw your hand before your brain knows what happened. Nerves carry messages differently than copper wire carries electricity. Like a string of interlinked batteries, each nerve is chained to others and normally only has to send a signal a short distance to a neighbor. The neighbor then fires the message along the line to another. These messages can be transferred up to 400 feet per second throughout the body. Nerves transmit two types of messages: activate or relax. Some nerves operate on an automatic system (like the heartbeat, breathing and digestion) and some are controlled voluntarily (like walking, lifting and swallowing).

    http://ucneurology.uchicago.edu/Neurological_Disorders/Headaches/headaches.html
University of Chicago neurologists provide a range of therapies for preventing, treating and managing migraine headaches including acute, chronic and cluster headaches. Patient care is based on a scientific approach that applies wisdom gained first-hand through lab research into the treatment of challenging headaches. By studying the complex mechanisms within the brain which initially trigger headache pain, these neurologists develop better insights into effective treatments. About Migraine Headaches Migraine headaches often are inherited. They may be triggered by stress, diet, insufficient sleep, hormonal changes and other factors. Symptoms Headache pain may be chronic (long-term) or acute (sudden onset with severe pain). Some migraine headaches arise in a predictable pattern, such as during a woman's menstrual cycle. Pain may be concentrated in a specific region of the head or widespread. Cluster headaches may develop several times in a single night, often after falling asleep. Symptoms can include: intense pain or throbbing, often concentrated in a single region; nausea, sometimes with vomiting; blurred vision. Diagnosis Diagnosis is based on a detailed physical exam and medical history. Understanding each person's headache history and lifestyle habits can help physicians pinpoint the individual's causal factors and headache patterns. The medical team also analyzes each patient's lifestyle habits including diet, sleep, exercise, work activities and recreational activities.
