10 ways to avoid password headaches

by Tom Spring ALSO Expert: Hotmail hole likely started in Sweden Sign up for the Computer Connection email service For more computing stories (IDG) Passwords are the scourge of the digital age. Never mind the anguish the millennium bug is predicted to cast. Time and again, we are tortured by a multitude of passwords that force us to rack our brains for cryptic words like Get used to it, say computer experts. Increasingly, passwords are our last line of defense protecting our computer, our finances, and our medical records. At work, we have passwords to log on to a local area network, start Windows, and do things like check e-mail and surf a half-dozen Web sites. At some companies, you can't even use the restroom without punching in a five-digit pass code. Experts say employers have a lot to be paranoid about. Password-based attacks on small and large companies are steadily on the rise, say researchers at the CERT Coordination Center, a Carnegie Mellon University organization that collects reports on computer security problems.

What is a migraine and how does it differ from tension headaches?
Tension headaches are usually described as a continuous pressure pain or tightness of varying severity over the entire head, whereas migraine headaches are a severe, throbbing pain over one or both temples, or behind one eye or ear, and are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. A migraine often starts on waking up in the morning, but can occur later in the day and can last hours to one or two days. In individuals with a form of migraine called classic migraine, visual symptoms described as bluriness, dazzling zigzag lines, blind spots or sensitivity to light occur just before and sometimes during the headache. While fatigue and stress can sometimes bring on both tension and migraine headaches, bright lights, noise and alcohol are specific factors that can trigger a migraine.

Migraine Headaches
What most people think are migraine headaches are really tension headaches. "Real" migraine headaches are usually associated with nausea or vomiting and tend to be preceded by seeing flashes of light, zigzags, blind spots, or stars. Doctors call these preceding visual symptoms "auras," which are not nearly as much fun or as practical as what New Age people refer to as auras (and the nausea is no fun at all). Migraines are often triggered by psychological stress, but distinct from tension headaches, migraines tend to begin after a stressed person is finally able to relax; then that "relaxing" weekend or vacation becomes relaxation hell. During a migraine headache, blood vessels initially become overly constricted and then abnormally widened. You usually experience this pain on one side of the head, which can make you feel lopsided. Causes of Migraine Headaches
by Sue Dyson Anyone who has ever suffered from migraine will be only too aware of the effects of the illness on daily life. According to the National Headache Foundation — an organization set up to help migraine and other headache sufferers — American industry loses around $50 billion from absenteeism and medical expenses, all linked to headache pain. In fact, headaches account for about 157 million lost working days in a year. But we are not just talking about inconvenience and economic difficulties; the cost in terms of individual suffering is infinitely higher. Apart from the practical problems they face, sufferers and their friends and families are often in a state of anxiety and bewilderment, particularly in the days following initial diagnosis.

Headaches loom large after Congo's peace party
Story Tools JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) Years of killing, millions of corpses and the tatters of past deals say Congo's latest bid for peace can not work, but the alternative is more of the same. With a broad peace deal finally signed, the Democratic Republic of Congo's warring factions face a long haul if they are to silence guns, form a new government and bring the rule of law to their vast, anarchic country after 4-1/2 years of war. "For several years now the Congolese people have had no faith in these ceremonies, whose impact will be forgotten as soon as the doors close," said a scathing editorial in Thursday's edition of Kinshasa daily L'Avenir "The Future." Hours earlier, Congo's government, rebels and politicians thronged an elaborate tented complex in South Africa's gambling resort of Sun City to sign a deal on an interim administration. The goal is to end a war that has caused millions of deaths and organise the first democratic elections in four decades.

ENT Health Information Sinus Sinus Headaches Fact Sheet: Sinus Headaches
Not every headache is the consequence of sinus and nasal passage problems. For example, many patients visit an ear, nose, and throat specialist to seek treatment for a sinus headache and learn they actually have a migraine or tension headache. The confusion is common, a migraine can cause irritation of the trigeminal or fifth cranial nerve (with branches in the forehead, cheeks and jaw). This may produce pain at the lower-end branches of the nerve, in or near the sinus cavity.
Pain in the sinus area does not automatically mean that you have a sinus disorder. On the other hand, sinus and nasal passages can become inflamed leading to a headache. Headache is one of the key symptoms of patients diagnosed with acute or chronic sinusitis . In addition to a headache, sinusitis patients often complain of:
  • Pain and pressure around the eyes, across the cheeks and the forehead
  • Achy feeling in the upper teeth
  • Fever and chills
  • Facial swelling
  • Nasal stuffiness
  • Yellow or green discharge
However, it is important to note that there are some cases of headaches related to chronic sinusitis without other upper respiratory symptoms. This suggests that an examination for sinusitis be considered when treatment for a migraine or other headache disorder is unsuccessful.

Experimental implant under scalp zaps away headaches
Story Tools RELATED Interactive: How it works eliminating pain without medicine
American Council for Headache Education
National Headache Foundation WASHINGTON (AP) Teresa Lamesch endured a constant, incapacitating headache for almost two years. The slight touch of wind blowing against her forehead caused shocking jolts of pain. Bright sunlight or loud noises could make her retch. Heavy-duty narcotics and every other treatment failed to help. Then Dr. Sandeep Amin tried a last-ditch experiment. He hooked a tiny electrode to a needle and tunneled it under the skin by Lamesch's left eye, stopping atop the nerve responsible for her pain. Powered by a battery implanted near her collarbone, the device continually zaps that nerve with electric pulses blocking the Illinois woman's pain. "The minute he put it in, the pain was gone," says a grateful Lamesch. An estimated 20 million Americans suffer severe headaches, and as many as 10 percent of them have intractable head or facial pain. Treatment after treatment fails. Some are true migraines, which stem from inside the brain, but others mistakenly called migraines result from damaged nerves along the face or scalp.

What kinds of headaches are there?
More than 90 percent of headaches can be classified as tension-type, migraine or cervicogenic. Migraines are periodic severe, throbbing headaches that afflict far fewer people (and more women than men), usually hurt on one side of the head, can cause loss of appetite, nausea and even vomiting, and may involve a visual change called an aura. Cervicogenic headache is a muskuloskeletal form of tension-type headache (which may also be related to migraines). Many times, cervicogenic headache goes undiagnosed as such due to the relative newness of this classification. Who suffers from headaches? Many millions of adults, worldwide, get headaches regularly. Headaches are among the most common physical complaints prompting people to treat themselves or get professional assistance. One estimate holds that some 50 million people in the U.S. get severe, long-lasting, recurring headaches. Most headaches are not signs of serious underlying conditions, but they can be very distracting, debilitating and account for significant amounts of time lost from work.

Headaches common for many children, study finds
From Susan Deutchman Lilly CNN Medical Unit CINCINNATI, Ohio (CNN) Headaches, especially migraines, are a real and prevalent problem in children, according to new research released Monday. Scientists at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio studied 577 children aged 8 to 18, who sought treatment for headaches. More than one-third were found to suffer from chronic daily headaches defined as having at least 15 headaches per month. Among children in that group, more than one-third had frequent but not daily headaches, nearly 44 percent had daily headaches, and almost 20 percent had continual headaches. Also, 92 percent of those having at least 15 headaches a month suffered from migraines. Migraine headaches are vascular headaches that last about 2 to 3 hours in youngsters, but about 12 hours in adults.
