From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Allergic rhinitis , also called pollinosis hay fever or nasal allergies , is a collection of symptoms, predominantly in the nose and eyes, that occur after exposure to airborne particles of dust, dander , or the pollens of certain seasonal plants in people who are allergic to these substances. When these symptoms are caused by pollens, the allergic rhinitis is commonly known as "hay fever". Table of contents 1 Causes

Causes
Allergies are caused by an oversensitive immune system , leading to a misdirected immune response . The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances such as bacteria and viruses . Allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to substances ( allergens ) that are generally harmless and in most people do not cause an immune response. As noted above, hay fever involves an allergic reaction to pollen. A virtually identical reaction occurs with allergy to mold, animal dander, dust, and similar inhaled allergens. The pollens that cause hay fever vary from person to person and from region to region, but generally speaking it's the tiny, hardly visible pollens of wind-pollinated plants that are the culprits. Pollens of insect-pollinated plants are too large to remain airborne and pose no risk. Examples of plants commonly responsible for hay fever include:

Definition
Hay fever, which is also called allergic rhinitis , is a common allergic condition. A main feature of the condition is an inflammation of the nasal passages, or rhinitis, caused by an allergic reaction to pollen. Hay fever usually occurs when airborne plant pollens are at their highest levels in the spring, summer, and early fall.
Description
Hay fever is one of the most common chronic diseases in the United States. It is estimated that about 35 million people in the United States are affected. Hay fever can develop at any age, but it shows up most often in childhood through the early 20s. The term "hay fever" is not quite accurate, since the pollen of hay grasses is only one of the many possible allergens involved, and there is no fever. Although an allergy to pollen does not appear to be inherited, the tendency to allergic sensitivity in general may run in the family.
Of all the things that can cause allergies , pollen is one of the most widespread. Trees, weeds, and grasses produce pollen in large amounts for seed production. These pollens are dispersed by the wind, and many never reach the intended targets. Instead, they are inhaled into human noses and throats. Different plants release their pollen at different times of the year, so the timing of hay fever symptoms is different from person to person, depending on which plants provoke a response.

Define Hay Fever and Allergies
Hay fever describes the symptoms of runny nose, itchy eyes and throat, uncontrollable sneezing and sometimes itching of the skin. It is not caused by hay , and does not produce fever . The correct name for the condition is seasonal allergic rhinitis.
Many seasonal "colds" are actually allergic rhinitis and will hot respond to antibiotics. Seasonal allergic rhinitis happens when pollens and/or particles of plant or animal dander, mold spores, etc., come into contact with the lining of the nose, eyes, or throat. The body's immune system recognizes their presence and starts a reaction to prevent their invasion. In most people this is not a problem. However, in some patients the immune system is overactive and identifies normally harmless particles as dangerous, producing an excessive reaction that actually causes inflammation. This is known as allergy and the substances causing it are allergens. People are allergic to only certain substances, and the reaction does not usually appear until after several exposures to that substance.

Hay Fever
Hay fever is usually caused by an allergy to pollens of trees, grasses and weeds, or molds. It may occur any time of the year, but particularly during the spring or the fall months of the year. Hay fever symptoms include sneezing, itching and weeping eyes, stuffy or running nose, and cough. Hay fever is also called allergic rhinitis. Although the cause of allergy in hay fever usually comes from a plant pollen, allergic rhinitis can have other causes. These can be things like feathers, dust, or animal dander. Sometimes it is hard to know whether a stuffy nose or itchy eyes is due to pollen or another cause. People with hay fever have developed antibodies against pollens that circulate in the blood stream and stay in the tissues of the nose and in the skin. Antibodies react with pollen, causing histamine to be released in the blood. This causes the lining of the nose, sinuses, eyelids, and eyes to swell. These allergic attacks may last 15 to 20 minutes, or for several days. People with hay fever usually have symptoms at the same time every year, when certain plants bloom. For many, hay fever is only a minor problem, but for others it interferes with daily activities.

As the tender age of 21 Coward struck out for America, convinced that he would find Broadway success. While such success was still a few years off, he did experience the American acting style for the first time, a style which was much more animated and energetic than that of British actors in the 20s. More significantly to audiences of Hay Fever , he met and spent many weekends with actress Laurette Taylor, her husband writer Hartley Manners, and their two rather free and precocious children, Dwight and Marguerite.

Up to ten allergic rhinitis . The most well known of these reactions, hay fever, also causes a scratchy throat and itchy, watery eyes. Hay fever is triggered by ragweed and various pollens in the spring and fall. Other substances, however, can also lead to respiratory allergies in children. These include molds (which may cause symptoms in the early spring and late fall), animal dander (tiny flakes of skin from beneath the fur of household pets), and dust mites (microscopic bugs that grow in house dust). Although respiratory allergies are generally considered seasonal illnesses, those that are triggered by dust and animal dander can occur year-round. In small children, these allergies are more common than hay fever, which rarely shows up before the age of six. Children who are prone to allergic rhinitis also tend to develop symptoms when exposed to cigarette smoke, strong fumes, and in some cases, cold air. The incidence of asthma, chronic sinusitis and chronic middle-ear infections is particularly high in children with allergic rhinitis. WHAT CAUSES ALLERGIC RHINITIS?
