What Is Hay Fever? News Canada (NC)-Well, it's not caused by hay, and it isn't a fever. In fact, " hay fever" is a complete misnomer. The term was first used by English doctors over a hundred years ago when they noticed that during the hay-cutting season, some people suffered sneezing fits, runny noses and itchy eyes.
The more accurate name for hay fever is seasonal allergic rhinitis. It's an allergic reaction that may cause a runny nose, red, itchy, watery eyes, pressure in the eyes, sore throat and headaches. Symptoms, in fact, which are deceptively similar to those of a cold.
There are two kinds of allergic rhinitis. The first is perennial allergic rhinitis and it affects people year round. Since the substances causing the allergy - house dust, animals, mould - are found inside, it strikes mostly in the winter, when we're indoors the most.
The second, seasonal allergic rhinitis, is fairly easy to recognize, because it occurs at the same time each year. Pollen seasons vary according to the different types of pollen and the geographical location. It's important to know your pollen season, because medications like antihistamines are most effective if you start taking them before your peak season starts. To find out more about pollen levels in your area check the Claritin Pollen Forecast every 28 minutes past the hour on the Weather Network.
Also, it's important to be able to function normally while you to treat your allergy symptoms. Make sure to read your medication package properly because not all antihistamines are non-sedating. More specifically, look for the words "non-drowsy" on the box. With a little information and proper medication you will be able to control your hay fever and continue your outdoor activities this spring and summer season.

WHAT IS RHINITIS?
The nose is separated into two passages by a wall of cartilage called the septum and is lined with a membrane that produces mucus. The mucus, a thin clear liquid, traps small particles and bacteria that are drawn into the nose as a person breathes. The trapped bacteria usually remain harmless in healthy individuals. Normally, a cycle of congestion and decongestion occurs continuously throughout the day. When one side of the nose is congested, air passes through the open, or decongested, side. The sides alternate between being wide open and being narrowed.
Rhinitis describes a group of symptoms, including runny nose, itching, and sneezing, that are caused by irritation and congestion in the nose. Changes in the nasal passages caused by excessive exposure to environmental irritants, such as cigarette smoke, chemicals, changes in temperature, stress, exercise, or other factors may provoke symptoms of rhinitis in people who are susceptible, such as those who have allergies or structural abnormalities in the nose or face. If symptoms last less than six weeks, the condition is referred to as acute rhinitis and is usually caused by a cold or other infection or temporary overexposure to environmental chemicals or pollutants. [Infectious rhinitis is discussed in the Well-Connected Report #94

Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever, and Other Sneezy Things)
It is though by some people that up to 20% 1 out of 5 people in the United States suffer from some sort of respiratory allergy. (I heard this estimate from an allergist, mind you... but the number of patients I see with respiratory allergies is pretty high, so he may very well be right.) Although the most common and most infamous respiratory allergen is ragweed pollen, which is responsible for hay fever, there are thousands of other allergens floating around in the air we breathe, and many people are susceptible to more than one. (I myself am allergic to 42 different airborne allergens and that's out of only 46 to which I was tested for reactions.) There are things we can do about allergic rhinitis, though. Although you may not think so if you have had it long enough, there are many different treatments available for hay fever and other respiratory allergies, and if you have been suffering for a long time, you might want to ask your doctor about some of the newer therapies available.

HAY FEVER, ALLERGIES, ASTHMA
Hay fever is a chronic condition characterized by sneezing, nasal congestion, runny and itching nose, palate, ears and eyes. If you recognize any of these symptoms chances are, you or some member of your family has experienced hay fever at one time or another. Doctors call it allergic rhinitis. Most people know it as hay fever and if you've got it - - as 22 million Americans do - - you're likely to be plagued during the spring and fall seasons by such annoying symptoms as sneezing, congestion, runny nose, itchy throat and red, watery eyes. Allergy has different names. Allergy reactions occurring in the nose and sinus are called "sinus" or "hay fever" or "allergic rhinitis." And when allergy reactions occur in the chest we call it "asthma." Allergy reactions in the skin are named "hives" or "angioedema." So you see, allergy has different names depending upon where in your body it occurs. One out of every six Americans suffers from an allergic condition. Allergy is an inherited trait, a genetic susceptibility towards the production of certain allergy anti-bodies. Hay fever is basically an allergic reaction to pollens from trees, weed and grasses. Unlike garden flower pollen, which is carried by insects, the dry lightweight pollens which cause allergic rhinitis are generally spread by wind currents which make them difficult to avoid. In fact, samples of ragweed pollen have been found 400 miles at sea! While most people suffer mild discomfort with hay fever, it is estimated that more than 40 percent of the 5.8 million children who have respiratory allergies miss some school, stay in bed or feel upset by the condition.

HEALTHTRACK - JUL/AUG 97
A SUPPLEMENT TO THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE FOR THE WAITING ROOM Summertime is sneezin' season for people who have hay fever. For them, Mother Nature is sending out tiny 'guided missiles' in the form of pollen grains and mold spores. I f you're a hay fever sufferer, it might help to know you're not alone. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, based in Bethesda, Maryland, estimates that 35 million Americans experience upper-respiratory allergic reactions to airborne pollen.
Why Do I Sneeze?
Hay fever is another term for allergic rhinitis , a condition that seasonally affects people who are allergic to pollen or mold, and year-round affects people who are allergic to house dust or furry animals. It's thought that people inherit the tendency to have allergies. Problems occur when a person's immune system reacts to the pollen, mold, dust, or other irritant as if it were an alien invader. The result is watery nasal discharge; sneezing; coughing; itchy eyes, nose, and throat; nasal congestion; and dark circles under the eyes.
Pesky Pollen
Pollen allergies, common during spring, summer, and fall, are caused by trees, grasses, and weeds. Weeds deserve their bad reputation as heavy pollen offenders; ragweed is the major culprit.

September 12, 1990 Heyday of Hay Fever
Article #995 by Carla Helfferich This article is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. Carla Helfferich is a science writer at the Institute. In the north, autumn snows creeping down the mountains have long been known as "termination dust." That first white glitter signals the beginning of the end for summer jobs, building projectsand seasonal sneezes. Hay fever sufferers have real reason to welcome the first snows, and there are more of them every year: allergy to wind-borne pollen is an epidemic on the increase. Surprisingly, it's a relatively new disease. The first accurate account of hay fever entered medical annals only in 1819 when a London physician described his own "unusual train of symptoms." The first American description of hay fever didn't appear until 1852 In Japan, it was virtually unknown before the 1950s. There's always a suspicion that minor diseases appear or increase when people are less plagued by major illnesses (why worry about a seasonal runny nose when you're dying of tuberculosis?) and are more willing to report comparatively trivial symptoms to their doctors. Yet detailed historical studies show that the number of hay fever sufferers did increase rapidly during the 19th century, and clinical statistics suggest the increase is continuing. This bloom of allergy doesn't make evolutionary sense. People and pollen have coexisted peacefully at least since protohominids went roaming semi-upright through clouds of grass pollen on the African savannas. Is something new in the environment triggering trouble?
