Allergic rhinitis - not just a runny nose by Dr Lesley Hickin Itchy eyes, runny nose and constant sneezing are symptoms of this increasingly common condition. Dr. Lesley Hickin gives advice on allergic rhinitis and its most common form, hay fever What is allergic rhinitis? Inflammation of the membrane lining the nasal cavity is known as rhinitis. It can affect people all year round (perennial rhinitis) or can be seasonal (usually called hay fever), occurring at a specific time of year. advertisement To understand allergies you need to know a little about the immune system and how it works. Your immune system protects you from infection by producing antibodies that kill harmful organisms. When you have an allergy your immune system overreacts to substances that you eat, breathe or touch. Immune system cells are located in areas of the body where they are in the front line of attack when an allergen appears. These areas are the nasal cavity, including the tonsils, the lungs and the intestines. Reducing your exposure to allergens may help prevent allergic reactions but this is not always practical, and various treatments are available to combat the problem.

  • Preventing allergy symptoms: The first step to better allergy control In 1974, Kleinschmidt started having mild allergy symptoms. When she moved to rural Minnesota in 1976, she sought medical treatment because she found her symptoms unbearable. When her symptoms are severe, Kleinschmidt says she doesn't function very well. "I just don't have the energy. I spend most of my time scratching my eyes or sneezing. It creates a lot of frustration and fatigue," she says. To help prevent allergy symptoms, Kleinschmidt plans ahead. At home, she keeps her windows closed and turns on the air conditioning. Until she had air conditioning, she was miserable and had difficulty sleeping at night.

Spring heralds the return of pollen season, which brings discomfort to so many of us. Find out which herbs have been tested and shown to alleviate the congestion, sniffling, and sneezing of hay fever, so you can enjoy the warmer weather and longer days. Here are six herbal allies that can help you find n*atural relief from your seasonal allergies.
    Simple Solution:

Do be aware that just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t cause side effects in some. Always proceed cautiously with any medication, herbal or otherwise. Most of these herbs may be found at your local natural foods store, or go online to find an herbal purveyor. Butterbur may be a very effective treatment for hay fever. It was recently compared to an antihistamine and did just as well in controlling hay fever symptoms, but did not produce drowsiness. This plant contains substances that are known to affect the immune system, and it has also been used to treat asthma. Stinging nettle was thought to be as good as, or better than, previous hay fever medications by half of the patients tested. The dose used was two 300 mg capsules taken whenever the symptoms were experienced. This is not a conclusive study, but it does suggest that stinging nettle might be a useful treatment. It is probably a safe herb.

    Hay fever and rhinitis
Every year millions of people in the UK experience the discomfort of hay fever. Some people only have symptoms during the summer. Others have hay fever-like symptoms all year round (called 'perennial allergic rhinitis'). This booklet describes the symptoms and causes of both conditions. It offers practical advice on how to avoid your triggers and find the treatment that's right for you.
Case study: Doreen Moore and her daughter Claire
I developed hay fever three years ago and have had the summer sneezes ever since. I tend to get an itchy nose and my eyes water. I take antihistamines as soon as my symptoms start. I'm quite lucky because if I take my antihistamines quickly enough they really do keep my hay fever under control. My ten-year-old daughter Claire isn't so lucky. Claire has severe hay fever. From early April she takes mild antihistamines and then takes increasingly strong ones as the summer goes on. She also has to use a nasal spray and eye drops. Unfortunately, pollen is a trigger for Claire's asthma too so she has to adjust her asthma medication during the summer. Claire's hay fever has a big impact on her own life and ours. We've all had to learn how to adapt. For example, Claire's eyes run and her nose itches as soon as she steps outside, and she's learned that she's better off reading indoors while the rest of us are out in the garden.

What are the symptoms of hay fever? Inhaled allergens trigger sneezing and inflammation of the nose and mucous membranes (conjunctiva) of the eyes. The nose, roof of the mouth, eyes, and throat begin to itch gradually or abruptly after the onset of the pollen season. Tearing, sneezing, and clear, watery nasal discharge soon follow the itching. Headaches and irritability may also occur.

Immunology Center Environmed Research Inc There are different types of allergy. The immediate or type 1 hypersensitivity is easily recognized because it involves quick and dramatic symptoms. Hay fever is the most common expression of allergy and is a prototype of immediate hypersensitivity. Hay fever is a reaction to airborne plant pollens in the nose. Allergy tests are positive, antihistamines help and allergy shots can reduce the reactivity over time. Delayed patterns of allergy are not so obvious and generally go unrecognized. Allergy skin tests do not show this problem nor do IgE antibody tests. Common specific problems obviously related to allergy include hay fever, asthma, rhinitis, otitis media, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, and anaphylaxis Shrinking Definition of Allergy The reason for the definition of "allergy" to shrink toward a narrowly-defined clinical practice probably was the skin test. If anything distinguished an allergist from his/her colleagues, it was the skin test. By a practical evolution of allergy practice, those clinical problems which were diagnosable by skin reactions became the special property of allergists. Allergy therapy became synonymous with desensitization (immunotherapy) injections.

Congestion or inflammation of the nose (rhinitis), sinuses (sinusitis), and throat (pharyngitis) may be due to airborne irritants and allergens; however, food allergy may be the undiagnosed cause of these common problems. Food allergy is suggested by these respiratory symptoms: nasal stuffiness, snoring, increased mucus flow in nose and throat and recurrent sore throats. Recurrent middle ear "infections" are very common in the first five years of life and may be eliminated by proper diet revision. Milk, wheat, and egg white allergy are the most common cause of respiratory symptoms, but many foods do this. Otitis Media Allergic Eye Symptoms Asthma Antihistamines ... More on Food Allergy Allergic Rhinitis Allergic rhinitis must be one of the most obvious environmental diseases. Hay fever is the prototype of type I allergy and the mechanism was thought to be a straight forward histamine-mediated response to inhaled antigen. The early immediate responses is characterized by sneezing and anterior nasal discharge, often profuse. While there are patients who just have hay fever attacks as discrete events and asymptomatic between pollen or dust exposures there is larger group of patients who develop more chronic symptoms. With continued antigenic exposure a chronic cell-mediated inflammation takes over. The chronic state is more difficult to characterize and understand. Airborne antigens must be absorbed into the mucosa and processed. If the antigens are derived from large structures such pollens, then obviously antigens must be extracted from the pollen as proteins or peptides which are then ingested and presented by macrophages.

Hay fever is an allergic reaction of the nose (and sinuses) to pollen or another substance in the air. Symptoms include:
    • a clear nasal discharge an itchy nose with sneezing and sniffing itchy, watery eyes (eye allergies) sometimes, sinus or ear congestion.
Hay fever is the most common allergy. More than 15% of people have it.
    What is the cause?
Although pollen is usually the cause of hay fever, it can also be caused by animal dander or something else your child is allergic to. This allergic sensitivity is often inherited. During late April and May the most common pollen causing hay fever is from trees. From late May to mid-July, the pollen is usually from grass. From late August to the first frost, the leading cause of hay fever is ragweed pollen.

    Hay Fever
    What is hay fever?
Hay fever is usually an allergic reaction to pollens of trees, grasses, and weeds. Sometimes it is an allergy to mold spores. Hay fever may occur any time of the year. It generally occurs in the spring, summer, or fall. Hay fever is also called seasonal allergic rhinitis.
    How does it occur?
Allergic symptoms result from reactions of your body to substances that it sees as foreign. Substances that cause an allergic reaction are called allergens. The allergens that cause hay fever are pollen and mold. They float in the air and are spread by the wind. The type of pollen in the air depends on the growing season and area of the country. Tree pollens cause most spring hay fever. In the summer, grass and some weed pollens are usually the cause. From late summer to the first frost, other weed pollens cause hay fever.
