Register of patients transported to the State Insane Asylum, 1882-1917 The Civil Sheriff was responsible for transporting to the State Insane Asylum at Jackson persons judged by the Civil District Court to be insane. He recorded the names of those transported in three volumes [filed under call number VF350] covering the years 1882-1920. In these volumes the Sheriff recorded the number of the suit record ordering the patient to be sent to Jackson, the date that he took the patient into custody, the patient's name, age, sex, color, address, nativity, occupation, marital status, disease, duration and cause of insanity, and remarks. Remarks usually are limited to certifications of delivery of a patient or group of patients to the asylum at Jackson, including the date of delivery. Starting in about 1906 the Sheriff began to enter names of victims of leprosy in addition to insane persons. Those individuals were received by the Sheriff on court order for eventual delivery to the newly opened camp for lepers at Indian Village in Iberville Parish which has since evolved into the Gillis Long Hansens Disease Center at Carville, La. The records are available on microfilm, filed under call number FK850 1882-1888.

Leprosy - Hansens Disease - Mycobacterium Leprae
Leprosy effects the peripheral nerves, skin and mucous membranes representing itself with 3 clinical types. It is most commonly found in men but can be found in women while the peak age for onset is in the 20's and 30's. It has an incubation period usually of 5-7 years but can vary from 2 years to 40 years. Leprosy is usually chronic and slow in it's onset and usually begins with a feeling of numbness of the effected area which will develop the disease
Tuberculoid Leprosy - one or a few hypopigmented hypoesthetic macules with well defined borders. The muscles in the body bec ome weak and fatigued
Lepromatou Leprosy - symmetric skin nodules, loss of hair, loss of skin appendages. ( severe ) little or no pain accompanies the rash. The rash will resemble a large tinea eruption.
Borderline Leprosy -symptoms between TB Leprosy and Lepromatous Leprosy. Symptoms may be worse or better. Eruptions will have a border with normal skin locked in the middle.

CDR Young Lee (biologist at FDA) was the project manager for examining chemical contaminants and pesticide contamination of food. Import samples are collected at the point of entry into US commerce. She also worked with the World Health Organization to review and finalize the Environmental Health Criteria. CAPT Richard Truman (microbiologist at Hansens Disease Center) used NASA imagery in a study with Louisiana State University. The satellite information produced multi layer computerized images to show the relationship between the occurrence of disease and environmental factors. This has worldwide implications for prevention of disease by reducing exposure to (or modifying) environmental factors. CAPT Charles Land (epidemiologist at NIH) is studied cancer risks and causes in populations exposed to ionizing (x-rays) and nonionizing (sun, radiowaves) radiation. This identifies the types of cells that are more vulnerable and what biological or behavioral factors modify risk of cancer from exposure. CDR Greg Lot (epidemiologist at NIOSH) studied the exposure of workers around television and cellular phone towers. This includes examining the effects of different frequencies on biological functions. This has implications for recommendations on developing alternate methods to reduce such environmental exposure.

The Real Secret to Better Health The best plant sourced enzymes on the market - at the best price! ULTIMATE ENZYMES from The Health Nuts Enzyme Nutrition The Food Enzyme Concept by Dr. Edward Howell Enzymes are the body's labor force. They are the workers responsible for every activity of life; even thinking requires enzyme activity. ... To top of this page The two most potent digestive enzymes secreted by the human body are amylase and protease. They help with the digestion of carbohydrates and proteins. Saliva supplies a high concentration of amylase, while stomach juice contains protease. The pancreas secretes both in high concentrations along with the enzyme lipase. Lipase deals with fats. The pancreas also secretes maltase, which reduces maltose to dextrose. Food enzymes are workers. They work day and night to break down the millions of cells in both plant and animals. For centuries humans have put these enzymes to work at predigesting foods before eating them. Fermented foods are predigested by their own inherent enzymes. Nature has enclosed all raw foods with the correct and balanced amounts of food enzymes either for human consumption or eventual decomposition outside the human body. The following are examples of enzymes found in various foods but do not necessarily list all the enzymes found in these food items: Enzymes In Foods To top of this page Apple Peroxidase Banana Amylase, maltase, sucrase

These conditions include chemical leukoderma, tinea versicolor, pityriasis alba, piebaldism, tuberous sclerosis, hansens disease, morphea, lichen sclerosis
http://www.docderm.com/patient_information/vitiligo.htm
VITILIGO Vitiligo is a skin condition whose exact cause is unknown. In vitiligo, patches of skin lose their pigmentation when the pigment producing cells (the "melanocytes") are attacked and destroyed. It may affect the skin, mucous membranes, eyes, inner ear or hairs leaving white patches. The usual type of vitiligo is called "Vitiligo Vulgaris" (means: common vitiligo). Variant types include linear, segmental, trichrome and inflammatory vitiligo. This disease affects an estimated 1% of the world's population. It affects individuals of all ethnic origins and both sexes, but is much more easily noticed on darker skin as areas that fail to tan . It is hereditary in one third of those affected. Vitiligo often starts on the hands, feet or face, and frequently pigment loss is progressive. Half the patients first notice vitiligo before 20 years of age. It often appears in an area of minor injury or sunburn. It is believed that vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder (autoimmune means the bodies own immune system turns on itself). Certain white blood cell direct the destruction of melanocytes. People with vitiligo are also somewhat more prone to other autoimmune diseases, such as alopecia areata, autoimmune thyroid disorders, Addisons disease, pernicious anemia, and diabetes mellitus.
