Hair loss
Definition: Partial or complete loss of hair is called alopecia.
Alternative Names: Loss of hair; Alopecia; Baldness
Considerations: Hair loss usually develops gradually and may be patchy or diffuse (all over). Roughly 100 hairs are lost from your head every day. The average scalp contains about 100,000 hairs. Each individual hair survives for an average of 4 1/2 years, during which time it grows about half an inch a month. Usually in its 5th year, the hair falls out and is replaced within 6 months by a new one. Genetic baldness is caused by the body's failure to produce new hairs and not by excessive hair loss. Both men and women tend to lose hair thickness and amount as they age. Inherited or "pattern baldness" affects many more men than women. About 25% of men begin to bald by the time they are 30 years old, and about two-thirds are either bald or have a balding pattern by age 60. Typical male pattern baldness involves a receding hairline and thinning around the crown with eventual bald spots. Ultimately, you may have only a horseshoe ring of hair around the sides. In addition to genes, male-pattern baldness seems to require the presence of the male hormone

Green, leafy vegetables, especially sea vegetables, are good mineral sources. Raw oats provide silica. Dried fruits and cherry juice are rich sources of iron. For women, thinning hair or hair loss can be a sign of a problem in the gastrointestinal tract. It could be a sign of insufficient stomach acids; It could also mean a deficiency of protein, zinc and other nutrients. Taking two acidophilus tablets after or between meals (four to six tablets per day) for two months will help.
For men, balding process can be slowed down by taking a low-fat diet. Some scientists postulate that the male pattern baldness is tied to increased testosterone levels during puberty. A high-fat, meat-based diet raises testosterone levels, and that may adversely affect hair follicles. For example, in Japan, male pattern baldness was very rare prior to World War II when the diet was lean and healthy. The Japanese now consume a more fatty, Westernized diet. Baldness is now increasing substantially among Japanese men. Eating low-fat foods may not stop hair loss; but it might help slow down the hair loss. Anemia is one of the most frequent causes of hair loss. Eat plenty of iron-rich foods, like liver (Avoid if you are pregnant) and other organ meat, whole grain cereals, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, dates, and raisins.

QUESTION
Why do thyroid patients lose hair, and is there anything that you suggest can be done? Mary Shomon
DRS. RICHARD AND KARILEE SHAMES ANSWER
It is widely believed that thyroid sufferers lose hair due to decreased metabolism in the scalp follicles, resulting in early release of the shaft, root and all. sometimes the hair becomes just too brittle, and there is a great deal of loss from split ends and breakage. As you know, thyroid is intimately involved with hair function, witness that early graying and loss of outer eyebrows, is a cardinal sign of low thyroid in oneself or in the family.
As far as what can be done, the first and primary step is to restore full normal thyroid function. Consider that in general the body's wisdom directs it to conserve energy when possible, from nonessential areas, shunting repair and regeneration power to those functions considered more essential. Another mechanism is that when thyroid function is low, intestinal absorption and utilization of vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional cofactors is compromised also. Not only are there not enough of the raw materials available, but the enzymes and sometimes temperature required for optimal chemical reactions is lessened.

http://www.modernhumanorigins.com/anth501.html
Return to My Papers Human Thermoregulation and Hair Loss Introduction One of the most important physiological constraints that has impacted the evolution of the human lineage is thermoregulation. Thermoregulation is any physiological or behavioral mechanism that acts to retain or generate body heat in environments colder than body temperature in order to prevent hypothermia, or that acts to remove body heat in environments warmer that body temperature in order to prevent hyperthermia. There are two main categories used to describe species with different body temperature systems, poikilotherms and homeotherms. Poikilotherms are organisms whose body temperatures are relatively variable, and change with the changing environmental temperature. Homeotherms are organisms that maintain their body temperature within a very narrow range through a variety of thermoregulatory structural and physiological devices in widely varying environmental temperatures. Homo sapiens is a homeothermic species that must maintain a relatively stable body temperature no matter what environmental conditions individuals are exposed to. Humans differ in many important aspects from other primate species in the structure and function of their thermoregulatory devices, and these changes are most probably related to the evolutionary pressures our ancestors faced at some time in the past. This chapter will describe the structure and function of the modern human thermoregulatory system, and place it in a comparative context with other closely related primate species. The possible selective pressures that likely faced our ancestors will be discussed in an explanatory framework under which certain features of the modern human condition could have evolved. The chapter will end with a discussion of various hypotheses that have been put forth to answer questions regarding the evolution of the human thermoregulatory system.

ATTENTION: DO NOT PURCHASE OR USE ANY HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE. Dear Friend, If you are looking for answers about hair loss, than you need this information. Hello, my name is David Katz, and perhaps like yourself, I have been through the hair loss industry jungle. I have searched through countless web pages for companies advertising the cure-all for hair loss, purchasing their products, and left with poor results and less money than I had before. A few months ago I decided that I had had enough, and started to do some major research on hair loss. What I did was study the reasons for hair loss and baldness in men and women, and convinced friends and family members with hair loss problems to purchase different products. All of my findings are organized in an easy to read format throughout this page. Here is what you will find on this site:
  • Why your hair loss is occurring (in an easy to read, plain english format)

Alopecia (Hair Loss) and Autoimmune Disease
Q:
Help! I have recently been diagnosed with alopecia and have hair loss over my entire body, including the scalp. I will be bald soon. I have had vitiligo for 16 years and never had hair loss. In November, I started taking Celebrex for arthritis and started losing hair about January or February. Can there be a connection to this? A: Alopecia or hair loss can follow serious infections with high fever, pregnancy, severe dieting, skin diseases or use of prescription medications. Chemotherapy for cancer is a well-known cause of hair loss, but anti-depressants, anti-inflammatory medication and blood pressure medicines have also been reported to affect hair growth. In your case, I do not think the Celebrex is responsible, but that you have alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that affects about 2% of the population. It can range from small round patches of hair loss to loss of all scalp hair (alopecia totalis) to loss of all body hair (alopecia universalis), which is what you have.
