Male Breast Reduction (Treatment of Gynecomastia) Background: Technique: The procedure for male breast reduction takes an average of two hours, usually on an outpatient basis, using general or local anesthesia. If excessive glandular tissue, fat and skin is present, it will be excised. Surgery may be performed alone or in conjunction with lipoplasty (where the suction device will typically be inserted through the existing incisions). For the removal of excess fatty tissue alone, liposuction should be all that is needed; in such cases, scars will be small and barely visible. Benefits:
  • Results are permanent (although subsequent obesity can create a gynecomastia-like effect).

Introduction
Gynecomastia, which represents a benign proliferation of the breast glandular tissue, can be detected in up to 70% of boys during puberty and between one-third and two-thirds of adults (Braunstein 1993). This common clinical condition results from an imbalance in estrogen action relative to androgen action at the breast tissue level. Full text of this article can be downloaded in PDF format. Gynecomastia: When Breasts Form in Males
Printer-friendly version Email this article
What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which firm breast tissue forms in males. The breast tissue is usually less than 1-1/2 inches across and is located directly under the nipple. Gynecomastia may be present on one side or on both sides. This condition may make the breast tender. Some men and boys have fat on their chests that makes it look like they have breasts. This condition is called pseudogynecomastia (false gynecomastia). It is not the same thing as gynecomastia. Return to top
What causes gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is usually caused by changes in hormones at puberty or as part of aging. Hormones are chemicals produced by the glands of the body, such as the thyroid gland, the testes and the ovaries. Gynecomastia may be caused by changes in the balance of 2 hormones, estrogen and testosterone. In rare cases, gynecomastia is caused by prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, illegal drugs, tumors or disease. Return to top
