Gynecomastia Gynecomastia , which translates to “female breast” , is a condition in which firm breast tissue forms in males. The breasts enlarge and may become tender. This enlargement may be present on one or both sides. Most of the time the enlargement is on both sides and the amount of enlargement can vary widely. The most severe cases may have an increase to a C or D cup size. Some men or boys have fat on their chest that makes them appear as if they have breasts. This is not the same as gynecomastia. This is called pseudogynecomastia (false gynecomastia). What causes gynecomastia? This condition is usually caused by changes in hormone levels. Gynecomastia may occur at puberty or as part of the aging process when the activity of the testes begins to decrease. Gynecomastia is most common during puberty. As many as 65% of 14 year-old boys have this condition and 90% of teenage boys have total regression (it completely goes away) in about 18 months to three years without any treatment. Gynecomastia may be caused by changes in the balance of estrogen and testosterone. During puberty, there may be a temporary lag in the production of testosterone behind that of estrogen resulting in breast development. Furthermore, men who are undergoing treatment for prostate or testicular cancer, for example, may be given estrogen as part of their treatment. The majority of these men receiving estrogen will develop gynecomastia.

Males have a small amount of breast tissue, but it consists of just a few ducts, without lobules, in a fibrous stroma. It may be unilateral or bilateral. Sometimes it can occur at puberty or sometimes with aging. Gynecomastia may occur with cirrhosis of liver, Leydig cell tumors of testis, or with drugs. There can be ductal epithelial hyperplasia, or prominent periductular edema as seen here.

    Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is the development of abnormal breast tissue on men, small or large, and normally on both sides. The term comes from the Greek gyne meaning "woman" and mastos meaning "breast." The condition is common in adolescent boys, though in 90% of such cases the symptoms disappear in a matter of months to a few years at most; it may also occur in males of advancing years. It is generally a result of an imbalance in hormones, though there are many different possible root causes. Gynecomastia is not simply a buildup of adipose tissue but includes the development of glandular tissue as well. It may take a softer form or include a form of lump-like gland, which should

Ah, puberty. It can be a very interesting time in a guy's life, what with all the changes going on. In fact, it seems like every day something on your body grows bigger or hair begins sprouting somewhere. Each day brings a new change or two, and it can sometimes feel like it's hard to keep up. It doesn't happen to every guy, but one of these changes can be the development of breast tissue. It's called gynecomastia (pronounced: guy-nuh-ko- mas -tee-uh) and it's completely normal - and almost always temporary. So how exactly does a guy happen to develop breast tissue? What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which breast tissue forms in guys, usually due to normal hormonal changes during puberty. Hormones are chemicals produced by your body's glands. In a guy, hormones produced in the testicles are responsible for the physical changes that begin to take place during puberty - facial hair, muscle development, a deepening of the voice, and the lengthening of the penis, for example. Guys and girls produce both androgens (hormones that help develop and maintain male characteristics) and estrogen (a hormone that is responsible for most female characteristics).

Breast Reduction in Men With Gynecomastia
    What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which the male's breast tissue enlarges. Gynecomastia literally means "woman breast." This increase in tissue usually occurs at times when the male is having hormonal changes, such as during infancy, adolescence, and old age.
    What causes gynecomastia?
This is usually a benign (non-cancerous) condition that may be caused by many different hormonal changes, or the cause may be unknown. The changes in hormones usually include an increase in estrogens or a decrease in androgens (testosterone). Sometimes, this condition may be associated with other diseases that must be ruled out in order to make a diagnosis. In some conditions, including breast cancer, liver diseases, lung cancer, testicular cancer, tumors of the adrenal glands or pituitary gland, drug use, certain congenital (present at birth) syndromes, or thyroid disorders or trauma, gynecomastia presents itself as a symptom. However, this is not true in all cases.

    What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition that often occurs in boys during puberty. During this time a boy's breasts may begin to take on female breast characteristics. He may notice that his breast is tender and that a small area of breast tissue can be felt beneath his nipple. This condition is very common; about half of all 12- to 16-year-old boys have some degree of gynecomastia.
    What is the cause?
Gynecomastia is thought to be caused by an imbalance of hormones in boys during the middle part of puberty.

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed This is a condition in which males develop enlarged breasts. This is quite common in adolescents and is often first noted at the onset of puberty. The medical literature reports rates as low as 8 percent and as high as 65 percent. Most of these cases are due to changes in the hormonal secretion with temporary excess of estrogen like substances or relative deficiencies of testosterone-like substances. This imbalance can lead to temporary increases in the amount of ductal tissue present on one or both sides. The majority of cases show enlargement in both sides. The degree of enlargement varies widely but in the most severe cases C or D cup breasts may be present. The milder cases usually resolve in three months to a year although it is not unusual to see some breast enlargement for up to three years. By the late teens most of these patients will have normal appearing male breasts without any form of treatment. Because young boys are reluctant to discuss their concerns they are likely to simply try to hide their abnormal appearance with clothing.

(21-Apr-04) I am a 64 year old male in excellant health except for being about 30 pounds overweight. About 4 months ago, I developed some tenderness in my left breast under and around the nipple. I also have noticed that the breast is getting larger. With the use of hot packs, the tenderness is almost gone. My family doctor examined the breast and did not feel anything abnormal other than what he thinks is more fat in the left breast than in the right breast. My question is: is soreness normal with gynecomastia? My doctor said I might have it but was not sure. He also didn't say anything about the soreness. I don't know the breast is sore unless I push around on it. I seem to feel the the tissue under the nipple is harder in the affected breast that in the other one but my Doctor said he thinks that is just more fat in that breast than in the other one. Thanks A Forum-M.D.-KP
(21-Apr-04) Windbreaker Breast soreness may be possible with gynecomastia. Things like breast cancer is more severe in males, so you may want to consider further testing. This would include a mammogram and/or an ultrasound. Any suspicious mass should be evaluated with a biopsy.

Gynecomastia is the term used for enlarged male breasts. Gynecomastia is a very common condition in men, affecting a significant percentage of men. Although there are medical causes of gynecomastia, most commonly there is no known cause nor any associated medical condition associated with male breast enlargement. Usually, male breast enlargement is due to excess fat in the male breasts, rather than actual breast tissue. This is what the term pseudogynecomastia means. Pseudogynecomastia is actually far more common than true gynecomastia. Although extremely common, gynecomastia is often a very considerable cosmetic and emotional concern for men who have it. An incision would be made around the areola, and the fat removed directly through the incision. This results in reduction of the fat, and in improved shape, but left a scar around the areola. These scars are visible and can be very unnatural looking.

Does your chest skin always seem to stay slack (too elastic) and suffer from looseness (laxity)? Do your breasts seem full of fatty tissue or abnormally large? Good skin elasticity is desirable since it makes for a smooth surface contour. Tight skin is generally seen in the very young and is gradually lost as we age. Even through middle age, however, we retain some elasticity. If you are not obese, the skin envelope can always shrink and adjust to a reduced profile following a breast reduction procedure. Excessive breast growth in men is a medical condition called Gynecomastia . Male breast tissue reduction, mastopexy, surgically places the chest in a higher position and reduces the size of male breasts. After most reduction procedures, men report a stronger, firmer chest that looks and feels more masculine, and as a result, a better self-image and higher confidence.

A word about breast reduction in men...
Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts." Though this oddly named condition is rarely talked about, it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. If you're considering surgery to correct gynecomastia, this brochure will give you a basic understanding of the procedure - when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please be sure to ask your doctor if there is anything about the procedure you don't understand. The best candidates for gynecomastia correction Many men have gynecomastia - enlarged, female-like breasts - causes by excess glandular tissue or fat (or both).
