Gynecomastia Introduction
Gynecomastia is the development of enlarged breasts in males. Not every male who has gynemycastia is in a rush to remove their breasts. I first started developing breasts at the age of 11, and I suppose because I was brought up by a single mother who was a raving feminist, nobody told me anything was wrong. I have what I call 'screwy genetics', which means that technically I am neither male or female. Thus I am producing more estrogen than testosterone. Something like that. It never bothered me much to find out. I really don't have problem with accepting my body, rather I have a problem with the way some narrow minded people react to it. Gynecomastia is a naturally occurring medical condition, so people with it should not have to feel guilty, or put up with ill treatment by society. Despite what many people say or think, I believe that if it happens through genetics or diet or any other natural process, then it is natural. If it is natural, then it falls into the wide range of what is human. Not typical, not average, but certainly not abnormal or a deformity.

GYNECOMASTIA How It Happens and What You Can Do About It. "Doctor, I have bitch tits. Am I f***ed?" These are the words that a young bodybuilder used to introduce himself. He went on to describe how he followed a cycle of anabolic steroids and then afterward noticed a swelling of his chest that he thought was the muscle growing. It soon became tender and progressed to a sizable mass of tissue, to the point where he was embarrassed to take off his shirt and show the physique he'd worked so hard to build. Dieting and building up his pecs only made the problem worse. He couldn't even hug his girlfriend without discomfort. Gynecomastia, or "bitch tits," as it's called, is a benign enlargement of the male breast tissue. The term comes from the Greek words gyne meaning "woman" and mastos meaning "breast." It can occur naturally or as the result of certain substances being in the system. Historical writings and artifacts show that Gynecomastia is an ancient problem, as evidenced by statues of Pharaoh Seti I that have enlarged breasts. Aristotle reported encountering the problem, and the earliest description of the surgical removal of Gynecomastia is found in the writings of Paulus of Aegineta, who lived from 635 to 690 A.D.

GYNECOMASTIA
You are visitor number to this page. Gynecomastia While most gynecomastia is seen in adolescence and resolves without treatment some cases are the result of endocrine gland malfunction or tumors. Some types of liver disease and cancers of several types can produce gynecomastia. Some cases are due to congenital syndromes and others may be related to drug use such as steroids or marijuana. There is a second peak in incidence late in life and here the risk of ductal carcinoma of the breast must be a stronger consideration so that biopsy of the breast may be necessary. When gynecomastia is severe, when it persists, and in those cases where there is supicion of malignancy surgical treatment may be indicated. In most cases the incisions for this operation can be placed just inside the areolar border where they are less likely to be conspicuous. The glandular tissue must be removed. This firm fibrous tissue extends from the nipple areolar complex down to the surface of the pectoral muscle beneath. In some cases it is helpful to use liposuction to remove some of the fatty tissue which always surrounds this ductal tissue. Without this liposuction some patients would have a "donut" shaped defect after removal of the ductal tissue. Pictures above represent a mild and a moderate case of gynecomastia treated surgically. The preoperative views are on your left, the postoperative on your right.

Do men get breast cancer?
Many people are unaware that men can develop breast cancer. Every year in this country approximately 1000 men will develop carcinoma of the breast ( ). These men frequently experience surprize, confusion, and a sense of isolation. While the average age at diagnosis is around 65 years, the problem can occur in younger (or older) men ( How common is it?
For every 100 women who develop breast cancer in the US, one male is diagnosed with the equivalent disease. The overall incidence is between 0.1 and 3.4 cases per 100,000 man-years. This makes male breast cancer one of the rarest malignancies, contributing to the generally low level of public awareness. What causes it?
Just as the causes of female breast cancer are still under study, the precise cause (or causes) of male breast cancer are still under study. Men have glandular breast tissue that is subject to hormonal influences. Excess estrogen, especially around the time of puberty, has been identified as a possible factor. Men with Klinefelter’s syndrome have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, as do men who take estrogens or estrogen-like compounds. Androgen (and possibly progesterone) exert a protective influence. Men who are deficient in androgen seem to also be an increased risk (for example, men who have testicular atrophy from mumps orchitis, injury, or undescended testes). Brain tumors and conditions associated with excess production of prolactin have also been implicated in some cases of male breast cancer (

The breasts often enlarge unevenly. Gynecomastia during puberty is not uncommon, is self-limiting, and usually goes away over a period of months.
In newborns, breast development may be associated with milk flow (galactorrhea). This condition usually lasts for a couple of weeks and in rare cases may persist until the child is two years old. It is caused by exposure to maternal hormones.
Other causes of gynecomastia include chronic liver disease, kidney failure, and exposure to estrogens, androgens (often taken secretly for body building), marijuana, and some medications. Rare causes include tumors, genetic defects, or an overactive thyroid. Common Causes

Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement), is a very common condition in men. It can result in terrible embarrassment, teasing, and social trauma. Many will try to hide it with thick shirts, avoiding bare chested activities, and withdrawing from public exposure. Not all surgeons offer the same type of male chest sculpture. There is much to learn about this surgery. This website is but an introduction to what we have to offer at Bermant Plastic Surgery. We take the education of our patients very seriously. The following pages have actual patients Dr. Bermant has operated on, their before, during, and after surgery photographs. Since his tumescent techniques have limited bruising, we can show images of very early results. Some may want to learn about the surgical details shown on other pages. Though often overlooked, breast cancer afflicts men too
By ROD HARMON - Knight Ridder Newspapers
Date: 10/06/00 22:15

BRADENTON, Fla. When you say the words ''breast cancer,'' the image that immediately comes to mind is that of a woman.
That's understandable because women make up 99 percent of all breast cancer cases every year. But that remaining 1 percent the type that afflicts men tends to be overlooked. And the results are usually fatal.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 1,400 new cases of male breast carcinoma will be diagnosed this year in the United States.
About one-quarter of the victims will die.
''When they go to the doctor, they go late, because males aren't as aware as women,'' said Jose Estigarribia, a general surgeon with Manatee Memorial Hospital in Florida. ''Usually their wives get them to come.''
Although breast cancer is 100 times more common among women, it's usually caught at a later stage in men. That's partly because it's harder to detect in males, and partly because men tend to ignore the symptoms until the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. They just don't think it can happen to them. ''Breast cancer in men can spread very quickly, because the distance between the breast and the chest wall is shorter, allowing for the cancer to spread to the lymph nodes and the rest of the body at a faster rate,'' said A. Samir Hassan, a general and vascular surgeon with Manatee Surgical Specialists.

How can I know if surgery is right for me?
My job is to tell you what surgery can do for you and to help you understand the risks. Only you can decide whether the operation is right for you. I think it will help you achieve your aim. Although I cannot give you a guarantee, I believe you will like the result. Still, the decision remains a personal one and you must make it.
Can I get the same results without surgery?
I only do surgery when no good alternative exists. Your need falls into this category. Without surgery, I cannot correct your problem as successfully. When I examine you in the office, I assess the possibility of other treatments. I balance the advantages and disadvantages of surgery in your case. I think the advantages of surgery outweigh the disadvantages. If you have concerns or you are not clear about the operation, call me before the operation. Make certain your mind is clear long before the day of surgery. I want you to go into the operation with a clear and confident attitude.
How much will the operation cost?

Gynecomastia is the term which describes the enlargement of the male breast. Affecting as many as 40% of men, this condition is not an uncommon one. It can happen in one breast or both breasts. While there is no known cause in most cases of gynecomastia, other cases can result from medical conditions like liver disease or the use of certain drugs. Male breast enlargement can occur as a result of either excess glandular tissue, excess fat or both. A breast reduction, involving the removal of excess fat and/or glandular tissue, can help to alleviate this condition. In cases of men who have excess skin, they will also have the skin removed at the same time which will produce the best possible results. Patients who are alcoholics, on drugs (e.g. steroids), or overweight must first correct these issues before undergoing the reduction procedure. If the condition conditions after the correction of these medical problems, the procedure may then be reconsidered for that patient. Talk to your plastic surgeon about any of these medical condition so that he can help you and refer you to the appropriate speciality doctor. Like all procedures which involve surgery, there is the risk of possible complications with breast reduction procedure for men. For further information about the potential risks and complications, ask your plastic surgeon. These risks are markedly reduced by only selecting a qualified plastic surgeon to perform your surgery. Please visit our “How to choose a plastic surgeon?” page for further help and information.

Endocrinology and gynecomastia (Breast enlargement in males). What is gynecomastia? gynecomastia is defined as breast development or enlargement in males.
http://www.endo-society.org/pubrelations/patientInfo/gynecomastia.htm
Endocrinology and Gynecomastia (Breast enlargement in males) What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is defined as breast development or enlargement in males. It may be present on one side or both sides of the body and may cause the breast to be tender. Breast development due to being overweight is referred to as pseudogynecomastia or false gynecomastia. This type of breast development due to weight gain is not the same thing as the condition referred to as gynecomastia. What causes gynecomastia?
Breast formation in males is most commonly caused by hormonal changes that occur at puberty or as part of the aging process. If the balance between the hormones estrogen and testosterone is changed, breast development can occur. Gynecomastia may also be caused by certain medications (e.g., psychiatric medications, ulcer drugs, digoxin) or by an underlying disease (e.g., low testosterone state) or a breast cancer tumor. Who is affected by gynecomastia?
Development of breast tissue in males is most often associated with adolescent boys and aging men. In adolescent boys, breast enlargement is relatively common and typically goes away on its own in 2-3 years. This is often called pubertal gynecomastia. Why is it important to know about gynecomastia?
