    Guillain-Barre syndrome
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Guillain-Barré syndrome Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), is an acquired immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nervous system (e.g. not the brain and spinal cord ). It is also called acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, acute idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, acute idiopathic polyneuritis and Landry's ascending paralysis The pathologic hallmark of the disease is myelin loss of peripheral nerves due to an acute and progressive inflammation of unknown cause. It is suggested that it is an autoimmune disease, in which the sufferer's immune system is triggered into damaging the nerve covering. There is some support for this in that half of all cases occur soon after a microbial infection or respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Many cases developed in people who received the swine flu vaccine. Peripheral nerves originate in the spinal cord and proceed to their target tissues (mainly muscle, skin and all internal organs). Their most proximal parts emerging from the spinal cord are called nerve roots and the inflammation in most (but not all) typical Guillain-Barré syndrome cases starts in these roots. Therefore, this condition is also referred to as acute polyradiculoneuritis GBS is a rare disease - affecting about 1 to 2 people in every 100,000 per year. It does not discriminate with regard to the age or sex of sufferers.

GBS can affect children of all ages and social classes and affects both males and females. The incidence is 0.8 out of 100,000 children younger than 17 years of age. GBS is rarely diagnosed in children younger than 6 months of age.
Approximately 75 to 90 percent of the children diagnosed with GBS experience a full recovery with no further complications. Recovery often begins within a few weeks after the onset of symptoms.
    • Decreased feeling or pain in fingers and toes. Leg weakness or pain progressing to the arms. Problems walking. Irritability. Breathing problems. Facial weakness.

Your child may experience muscle weakness over a period of one to two weeks. The full extent of the weakness can last up to one to two months with an anticipated full recovery at least one to two years after diagnosis.
The diagnosis of GBS is made after the sudden onset of specific symptoms and after diagnostic testing. During a physical examination, your child's physician will obtain a complete medical history of your child, and may also ask if there is a family history of any medical problems.
    • Blood tests Urine tests Lumbar puncture (spinal tap) - a special needle is placed into the lower back, into the spinal canal. This is the area around the spinal cord. The pressure in the spinal canal and brain can then be measured. A small amount of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) can be removed and sent for testing to determine if there is an infection or other problems. CSF is the fluid that bathes your child's brain and spinal cord.

    Guillain-Barre syndrome
Definition: Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder caused by nerve inflammation involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis , which often follows an infectious illness.
Alternative Names: Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome; Acute idiopathic polyneuritis; Infectious polyneuritis; Acute inflammatory polyneuropathy
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause denervation (kill the axon part of the nerve cell), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another.
The exact cause of this disorder is unknown. It may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages 30 and 50. It often follows a minor infection, usually a
