  • What Is It? Campylobacter jejuni Symptoms The disorder progresses quickly, with most patients experiencing the worst weakness of legs, arms, chest and other muscle groups within three weeks of the start of the disease. In some cases, the weakness may progress very rapidly. When this happens, weakness in the legs can progress to complete paralysis of the legs, arms and muscles of breathing over the course of hours or a very few days. For that reason, a person who develops sudden weakness in the legs or arms should contact a doctor immediately.

    What is Guillain-Barre syndrome?
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a neurological disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. It is a devastating disorder because of its sudden and unexpected onset. The disorder can develop over the course of hours or days, or it may take up to three to four weeks. The stage of greatest weakness is usually within the first two weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest. What are symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome?
The first symptoms include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs, which sometimes spreads to the arms and upper body. The symptoms may increase in intensity until the following does or does not occur - in these cases, the disorder is considered a medical emergency:
    • muscles cannot be used at all the patient becomes nearly paralyzed it may become difficult to breathe blood pressure and heart rate are affected
Although symptoms can become life threatening, partial recovery is possible from even the most severe cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome (however, some degree of weakness may still be present).

    Guillain-Barre syndrome
    Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder caused by nerve inflammation involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis , which often follows an infectious illness.
Alternative Names: Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome; Acute idiopathic polyneuritis; Infectious polyneuritis; Acute inflammatory polyneuropathy
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause denervation (kill the axon part of the nerve cell), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another.
The exact cause of this disorder is unknown. It may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages 30 and 50. It often follows a minor infection, usually a

Overview Guillain-Barre (ge-YAH buh-RA) syndrome (GBS) is an inflammatory disorder in which your body's immune system attacks the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves) and, rarely, parts of the brain itself. Severe weakness and numbness in your legs and arms characterize GBS. Loss of feeling and movement (paralysis) may occur in your legs, arms, upper body and face. GBS affects an estimated one to four in every 100,000 persons annually in the United States. It can strike any race at any age, but its incidence increases with age. GBS may occur within days or weeks after a viral infection such as influenza (flu) or diarrhea. It may be triggered by pregnancy or a medical procedure, such as a vaccination or minor surgery, or have no evident reason for developing. Because the cause of GBS is unknown, there's no way to prevent the disease from occurring.

The disorder can develop over the course of hours or days, or it may take up to three to four weeks. Many patients require an intensive care unit during the early course of their illness, especially if support of breathing with a machine is required. Although most people recover, this can take months, and some may have long term disabilities of varying degrees. Fewer than 5% die. Afflicting about one person in 100,000, GBS can develop in any person at any age, regardless of gender or ethnic background.
The cause of GBS is not known. Perhaps 50% of cases occur shortly after a microbial (viral or

In 1859, Jean B.O. Landry, a French physician, described a disorder in which the nerves of the legs, arms, neck, and breathing muscles were paralyzed. Georges Guillain, Jean Alexander Barre, and Andre Strohl discovered the characteristic abnormality of increased protein but normal cell count in the cerebrospinal fluid in 1916. Several names have been given for the syndrome including acute idiopathic polyneuritis, acute idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, Landry’s ascending paralysis, and Guillain Barre syndrome.

    Causes
The causes of Guillain Barre syndrome are unknown. Many researchers theorize that the autoimmune reaction in which macrophages and T-cells attack myelin in the peripheral and cranial nerves is associated with a bacteria or virus, as many cases occur a few days to a few weeks after an infection including the common cold, sore throat, and stomach and intestinal viruses with vomiting and diarrhea. The virus might induce the demyelination via a possible mimicry between the effector virus and a human ganglioside. Salloway and colleagues (1996) discovered that the lipopolysaccharide structure of some strains of Campylobacter jejuni , specifically, the terminal structures of the core oligosaccharide, resemble the human gangliosides GM1 and GD1a. A possible mimicry also exists between the influenza A NS2 protein and a sequence region of the human P2 (myelin) protein thought to be neuritogenic in animals and mitogenic for lymphocytes from patients with GBS. This finding could provide a possible link between the large number of cases of GBS associated with the 1976 USA swine flu vaccination program (Weise and Carnegie, 1988).

    Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Guillain-Barre (ghee-yan bah-ray) syndrome is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until the muscles cannot be used at all and the patient is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening potentially interfering with breathing and, at times, with blood pressure or heart rate and is considered a medical emergency. The patient is often put on a respirator to assist with breathing and is watched closely for problems such as an abnormal heart beat, infections, blood clots, and high or low blood pressure. Most patients, however, recover from even the most severe cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, although some continue to have some degree of weakness. Guillain-Barre syndrome can affect anybody. It can strike at any age and both sexes are equally prone to the disorder. The syndrome is rare, however, afflicting only about one person in 100,000. Usually Guillain-Barre occurs a few days or weeks after the patient has had symptoms of a respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Occasionally surgery or vaccinations will trigger the syndrome. The disorder can develop over the course of hours or days, or it may take up to 3 to 4 weeks. Most people reach the stage of greatest weakness within the first 2 weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest.

Eustace Mullins A mass polio vaccination in Finland (1985) resulted in a higher incidence of Guillain-Barre (GBS) cases in the first two quarters (16 total) compared to a mean incidence of GBS in the population of 3 cases per quarter during a 6 year surveillance period, 1981-1986. Ten of these were diagnosed within 10 weeks after vaccination with OPV. The Vaccine Safety Committee has acknowledged that OPV causes both paralytic polio and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Health officials had convinced the Chinese to rename the bulk of their polio to Guillaine-Barre Syndrome. This went along without a hitch for some time, until a research team suggested giving it a separate name - Chinese Paralytic Syndrome. This prompted an even closer look at the data. A later study (in Hebei province) found that both the new disorder and the Guillaine-Barre Syndrome was really polio. They came to their conclusion by looking at the trends in polio from 1955-90 and noted that, after mass vaccination started in 1971, reports of polio went down but Guillaine-Barre syndrome increased about 10-fold. Once again, polio was still there but wearing a different name tag. (Vaccination by Greg Beattie p68).
