    What is Guillain-Barrè syndrome?
Guillain-Barrè syndrome can affect anybody. It can strike at any age and both sexes are equally prone to the disorder. The syndrome is rare, however, afflicting only about one person in 100,000. Usually Guillain-Barrè occurs a few days or weeks after the patient has had symptoms of a respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Occasionally surgery or vaccinations will trigger the syndrome. After the first clinical manifestations of the disease, the symptoms can progress over the course of hours, days, or weeks. Most people reach the stage of greatest weakness within the first 2 weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest.

Guillain-Barré syndrome can be a devastating disorder because of its sudden and unexpected onset. Most people reach the stage of greatest weakness within the first 2 weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest. The recovery period may be as little as a few weeks or as long as a few years. About 30 percent of those with Guillain-Barré still have a residual weakness after 3 years. About 3 percent may suffer a relapse of muscle weakness and tingling sensations many years after the initial attack. What research is being done?

Overview GBS is short for "GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME" (pronounced Ghee-Yan-Barray), also called acute idiopathic polyneuritis and Landry's ascending paralysis. It is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves, those outside the brain and spinal cord. The syndrome occurs sporadically. It can't be predicted, and can occur at any age and in either sex. It can vary greatly in severity from the mildest case, that may not even be brought to a doctor's attention, to a devastating illness with almost complete paralysis that brings a patient close to death. Because it is so rare, most of the public has never heard of the illness, or if they have, know little about it. Yet for those affected, the illness can be severely frightening and disabling. Causes The causes of Guillain-Barre Syndrome are not known. A variety of events seem to trigger the illness. Many cases occur a few days to a few weeks after a viral infection. These infections include the common cold, sore throat and stomach and intestinal illnesses with diarrhea. Vaccinations may also precipitate its onset.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause denervation (kill the axon part of the nerve cell), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another.

The peripheral nerves convey sensory information (e.g., pain, temperature) from the body to the brain and motor (i.e., movement) signals from the brain to the body. GBS is characterized by weakness and numbness or tingling in the legs and arms, and possible loss of movement and feeling in the legs, arms, upper body, and face. Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradicalneuropathy (CIDP), is considered to be a related form of Guillain-Barre syndrome. It is much less common than GBS, and evolves much more slowly and usually is longer lasting. Some CIDP patients experience periods of worsening and improvement, and individual relapses are often confused with GBS.

A prodromal malaise with vomiting, headache, fever and limb pains is rapidly surmounted by a progressive and ascending paralysis. Guillain-Barre Syndrome
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a disease of the nervous system due to damage to the myelin sheath around nerves. The myelin sheath acts as an insulator the same as rubber or plastic around electrical wires. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is the most frequent acquired (as opposed to inherited) nerve disease (neuropathy). In many cases it follows shortly after a virus infection. It is also rarely associated with immunizations, surgery, and childbirth. What causes Guillain-Barre Syndrome? The cause of Guillain-Barre Syndrome is unknown, but it appears that there is an autoimmune (one's own immune system attacks the body) reaction. What are symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome include weakness, typically beginning in the legs and progressing upward. The weakness is accompanied by decreased feeling (paresthesia). Reflexes are lost, for example, the hammer to the front of the knee will not induce a kick. In severe cases breathing can be affected enough to require a ventilator and rarely the heart can be affected. The maximal degree of weakness usually occurs within the first 2-3 weeks.
