Gonorrhea
What is it?
Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria , Neisseria gonorrhea. It can infect the genital tract, throat or rectum and is spread by having unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex with an infected person. If a pregnant woman is infected, her baby can get a serious eye infection. An infected person can pass on the disease for years until they are properly treated. This infection is rarely, if ever, passed from one woman to another during sex. It is also called GC or Clap.
What are the symptoms?
Many women don't have symptoms. Some possible symptoms if you do have them are:
  • increased vaginal discharge
  • frequent or painful urination
  • unusual odour
  • bleeding
  • lower abdominal pain
  • sore throat
  • rectal discharge
Men are more likely to have symptoms which can occur 2 days to 6 weeks after infection. Men may have painful frequent urination and yellowish-white discharge.
How is it diagnosed?
A swab of the infected area can be tested in the laboratory.
Are there any complications?

(AP) Because of growing cases of drug-resistant strains of gonorrhea, the government is expected to announce this week that common treatments against the sexually transmitted disease no longer work and other drugs should be used, top experts said Monday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plans to announce Thursday new recommendations for treating gonorrhea, said spokeswoman Jessica Frickey, but she declined to give details. Two health officials who worked with the CDC on its new gonorrhea guidelines told The Associated Press that a different antibiotic will be recommended. The class of antibiotics commonly used to treat gonorrhea, including the popular ciprofloxacin, sold as Cipro, no longer are effective in fighting certain strains of the bacteria, said Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, deputy health officer and director of STD Prevention and Control Services for the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Cipro has been used for at least four years to fight gonorrhea, health officials said. In some areas such as in Los Angeles County, however, Cipro-resistant strains cause as many as 12 percent of all cases, said Dr. Peter Kerndt, director of the sexually transmitted disease program for Los Angeles County Public Health.

Bacterial Diseases

(curable with medication)
  • Gonorrhea (pronounced gon-uh-REE-uh) is nicknamed "the clap" or "the drip."
  • Bacteria transmitted during sex cause gonorrhea.
  • Women often have no symptoms at all or very mild ones. If symptoms appear, they may include burning during urination (peeing) and/or a vaginal discharge.
  • Men may have a yellow discharge from the urethra, opening in the penis. It may also burn or hurt to urinate (pee). Symptoms vary from person to person from being mild to severe. Men also may not have any symptoms.
  • A gonorrhea infection during pregnancy can cause problems such as stillbirth or blindness for the baby. If a mother is infected, she can pass gonorrhea on to her baby during delivery.
  • Antibiotics or penicillin can easily cure gonorrhea if treated early. If it is left untreated in women, gonorrhea (like chlamydia) can progress into a more serious illness called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and can keep women from being able to have children in the future. If it is left untreated in men, it can make them sterile (unable to have children).
  • Tell any sex partners right away if you find out you have gonorrhea. They should also be treated even if they have no symptoms.

Coming to Terms with a Sexually Transmitted Disease Diseases that Cause Vaginal Discharge: Gonorrhea Advertising Until 1991, gonorrhea was the most commonly reported STD in the United States, even though rates have been steadily decreasing since the mid 1970s. The number of cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1992 was 433,949; by the end of November 1993, the number of cases was 336,169. Some experts believe many cases go unreported, and they estimate the actual number to be about two million a year. Risk factors: You are more likely to get gonorrhea if you or your partner have casual sexual contacts with others and if you are under the age of 20. From 1981 to 1991, adolescents were the only group of Americans showing an increase in the number of cases; people aged 15 to 19 have twice the number of infections as those aged 20 to 24. People living in the South Atlantic region of the U.S. (from Delaware down the eastern seaboard) may be at higher risk because this region has the highest number of reported cases. People with limited access to health care also seem to have a higher risk for getting gonorrhea. Other groups at high risk of this or any other STD include people living in large cities, singles, those who have had past gonorrhea infections, drug users, and prostitutes.

Definition
Gonorrhea is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae . The mucous membranes of the genital region may become inflamed without the development of any other symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they are different in men and women. In men, gonorrhea usually begins as an infection of the vessel that carries urine and sperm (urethra). In women, it will most likely infect the narrow part of the uterus (cervix). If untreated, gonorrhea can result in serious medical complications.
Description
Gonorrhea is commonly referred to as "the clap." The incidence of gonorrhea has steadily declined since the 1980s, largely due to increased public awareness campaigns and the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted diseases , such as AIDS . Still, current estimates range from 400,000 to as many as one million projected cases of gonorrhea in the United States each year. These estimates vary due to the private nature of the disease and the consequent underreporting that occurs. The majority of reported cases of gonorrhea come from public health clinics. The disease affects people of all ages, races, and socioeconomic levels, but some individuals are more at-risk than others. Adolescents and young adults are the highest risk group, with more than 80% of the reported cases each year occurring in the 15-29 age group. Those individuals with multiple sexual partners and who use no barrier

GONORRHEA TEST KITS RECALLED BY ABBOTT LABORATORIES
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that Abbott Laboratories, Inc., has initiated a worldwide recall of 32 lots of laboratory kits used to diagnose gonorrhea. The kits have been shown to be unreliable because they may give false negative results. These test kits were distributed to hospitals and laboratories from Jan. 11 to June 24 2002. Gonorrhea is a serious, highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that affects both men and women. Women primarily suffer severe consequences from infection that is not detected and treated. Untreated gonorrhea in women can cause pelvic inflammatory disease that can lead to sterility. In pregnant women, infection can potentially cause abortion, premature delivery, or infection in the baby. If undetected and untreated in men, it can cause an infection of the urethra that makes urination painful and difficult. In both sexes, infection can spread through the bloodstream and infect the joints, skin, bones, tendons and other parts of the body. "FDA is alerting the public to this recall to help protect the public health," said FDA Deputy Commissioner Lester M. Crawford. "We want to make sure laboratories that have purchased these test kits, physicians who have ordered these tests, and people tested for gonorrhea since January receive this information so they can act upon it."

What is gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection that both men and women can get. What causes gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is spread through contact with an infected person during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. What are the symptoms of gonorrhea? Many women with gonorrhea do not have symptoms. If symptoms ARE experienced, they may include inflammation of the reproductive system, rectum, or mouth, depending on where the infection is located. A woman may experience unusual vaginal discharge (drip), pain or bleeding during or after sex, and pain or burning during urination. A man may experience a thick, yellow or greenish discharge or pus from the penis, and pain or burning during urination. Gonorrhea infection of the rectum can cause pain, rectal bleeding, pus or mucous discharge from the rectum, or constipation. If you think you've been exposed to gonorrhea, your provider can do tests to see if you're infected, whether you have symptoms or not. (Giving your doctor a chance to find infections that don't have symptoms is one reason it's so important to get regular check-ups, even when you're not feeling sick!)
