It affects the mucous membranes of the urethra, cervix, rectum, mouth, throat, and eyes. Both men and women may carry the disease without experiencing symptoms. Gonorrhea frequently occurs with chlamydia/nongonoccal urethritis (NGU). Incidence and Prevalence According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 650,000 people in the United States are infected with gonorrhea each year. This rate indicates about 50% of annual infections because as many as one-half of cases are unreported.

Gonorrhea
In 1995, 392,848 cases of gonorrhea in the United States were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Institute of Medicine, however, estimates that 800,000 cases of gonorrhea occur annually in the United States. The annual cost of gonorrhea and its complications is estimated at close to $1.1 billion. Gonorrhea is caused by a bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae , that grows and multiplies quickly in moist, warm areas of the body including the reproductive tract, the oral cavity, and the rectum. Although in women the cervix usually is the initial site of infection, the disease can spread to and infect the uterus (womb) and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This can cause infertility and ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. The disease is most commonly spread during sexual intercourse vaginal, oral, and anal. Gonorrhea of the rectum can occur in people who practice anal intercourse and also may occur in women due to spread of the infection from the vaginal area. Gonorrhea can be passed from an infected woman to her newborn infant during delivery, causing eye infections in the baby. When the infection occurs in the genital tract, mouth, or rectum of a child, it is due most commonly to sexual abuse.

What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae . Approximately 6,000 cases are reported each year in Wisconsin, making it the second most commonly reported STD in the state. Who gets gonorrhea? Anyone who is sexually active can get gonorrhea, but those at greater risk include:
  • Adolescents
  • Persons diagnosed with any STD
  • Persons with a sex partner diagnosed with any STD
  • Persons with more than one sex partner
  • Persons with a new sex partner
How is gonorrhea spread? Gonorrhea is usually spread by genital sexual contact, but the bacteria that causes gonorrhea can also infect the throat and rectum. Babies can get gonorrhea during birth if the mother has this infection. What are the signs and symptoms of gonorrhea?

A new CDC study of men seen at sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in 23 U.S. cities shows the number of gonorrhea cases resistant to the group of antibiotics most commonly used to treat the disease more than doubled from 2002 to 2003, from 0.4% to 0.9%. These antibiotics are known as fluoroquinolones and include ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin. These antibiotics are inexpensive and can be given as a single oral dose to treat the infection. Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea was 12 times higher among men who have sex with men than among heterosexual men. The number of resistant gonorrhea cases nearly tripled among this group, from 1.8% in 2002 to 4.9% in 2003 compared with rates of 0.2% and 0.4% among heterosexual men during the same time period.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Men who have had gonorrhea are more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, new research from the University of Michigan Health System finds. Having more than 25 lifetime sexual partners also increases odds of prostate cancer, by more than 2.5 times that of men with five or fewer sexual partners, the study found. The conclusions are part of the Flint Men's Health Study, a population-based study of black men ages 40-79 who live in Flint, Mich. The research will be presented May 9 at the American Urological Association annual meeting in San Francisco. The Flint Men's Health Study looked at African-American men as part of an effort to determine why black men are twice as likely as white men to develop prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from the disease. Researchers asked 703 black men without prostate cancer and 129 black men with prostate cancer about their number of sexual partners, age at first intercourse, frequency of sexual activity and history of sexually transmitted diseases.

If there are symptoms in the female they include frequent and painful urination, cloudy vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, inflammation of the pelvic area, and abnormal uterine bleeding. If the male has a purulent urethral discharge, he should assume he ahs gonorrhea until proven otherwise. If left untreated, it can cause serious complications in the body.

Gonorrhea What you need to know:
Gonorrhea is a common bacterial infection that affects about 650,000 people in the United States each year. Gonorrhea infection often does not cause symptoms, although some women have pain when they urinate, increased vaginal discharge or abdominal pain.
Pregnant women with untreated gonorrhea are at risk for miscarriage, preterm delivery and premature rupture of the membranes. Babies who become infected during delivery can develop serious eye infections, joint infections and, sometimes, life-threatening blood infections.
What you can do:
If you are pregnant, you will probably be screened for gonorrhea during an early prenatal visit. If you are infected, you will be given an antibiotic that should cure you. Both you and your partner should be treated at the same time. You can protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections by following these guidelines:
  • Have sex with only one partner who does not have sex with anyone else and who does not use drugs.

January 29, 1999
Reductions in AIDS cases among men who have sex with men (MSM) have been attributed in part to widespread declines in unprotected anal sex since the mid-1980s and use of increasingly effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) since the mid-1990s . Because data about HIV infection incidence are limited, other indicators of transmission risk have been used. In San Francisco, data from annual behavioral surveys among MSM (1994-1997) and from the sexually transmitted disease (STD) surveillance program (1990-1997) were analyzed to characterize changes in HIV risk behaviors of MSM and changes in incidence of male rectal gonorrhea. This report describes the findings of these analyses, which indicate increases in unsafe sexual behavior and increases in rates of rectal gonorrhea among MSM. Male rectal gonorrhea incidence declined from 1990 through 1993 (42, 33, 23, and 20 per 100,000 adult men, respectively). From 1994 through 1997, the incidence increased from 21 to 38 per 100,000 adult men (pless than 0.01) (

  • What Is It? Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae . These bacteria can be passed from person to person during sexual activity (vaginal, oral, and anal intercourse) leading to infections of the cervix, vagina, and urethra. If untreated, these "lower" gonorrhea infections can spread to higher portions of the reproductive tract, causing prostatitis (prostate inflammation) and epididymo-orchitis (inflammation of the epididymis and testes) in men, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women.

    Gonorrhea
    What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea, also known as the clap or GC, is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD). The infection can affect all parts of the body, but it usually shows up first in the genital area.
    How does it occur?
Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria. It is very contagious. The bacteria can enter the body through any body opening, such as the mouth, vagina, penis, or rectum. Gonorrhea is most often spread by sexual intercourse. In men, the infection usually starts as an infection of the urethra. (The urethra is the tube that urine passes through.) In women, the bacteria usually first infect the cervix. (The cervix is the opening of the uterus inside the vagina). The bacteria can infect the throat or rectum after oral or anal sex.
