WHAT IS GONORRHEA?
Gonorrhea is a curable sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae . These bacteria can infect the genital tract, the mouth, and the rectum. In women, the opening to the uterus, the cervix, is the first place of infection. The disease however can spread into the uterus and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID affects more than 1 million women in this country every year and can cause infertility in as many as 10 percent of infected women and tubal (ectopic) pregnancy. In 2000, 358,995 cases of gonorrhea were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the United States, approximately 75 percent of all reported cases of gonorrhea is found in younger persons aged 15 to 29 years. The highest rates of infection are usually found in 15- to 19-year old women and 20- to 24-year-old men. Health economists estimate that the annual cost of gonorrhea and its complications is close to $1.1 billion. Gonorrhea is spread during sexual intercourse. Infected women also can pass gonorrhea to their newborn infants during delivery, causing eye infections in their babies. This complication is rare because newborn babies receive eye medicine to prevent infection. When the infection occurs in the genital tract, mouth, or rectum of a child, it is due most commonly to sexual abuse.

What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a very common sexually transmitted disease (STD). This means that it is a disease that you get by having sex with someone who already has gonorrhea. The disease is caused by the gonococcus bacteria that can multiply and grow in moist, warm areas of the body. In women, gonorrhea can infect the cervix (opening to the uterus, or womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (tubes that carry eggs from the ovary to the uterus). It can also infect the urethra (urine canal) in men and women, as well as the mouth, throat, and rectum. Gonorrhea can be treated and cured by antibiotics. But, you can get the disease more than once - antibiotics will not protect you from getting gonorrhea again. This STD can cause serious and long lasting health problems in both women and men. And, if you have gonorrhea, you are more likely to become infected with HIV , the virus that causes AIDS, if you are exposed to the virus.

Gonorrhea is a common infection of the genitourinary tract (specifically the urethra and cervix) caused by the bacteria, Nisseria gonorrhoeae . About 1 million new infections are reported each year in the United States. Young men aged 20 - 24 have the highest rate followed by those 15 to 19 years old. In women, the highest rate are in adolescents aged 15 - 19 years old. It is also quite common to have both Gonorrhea and Chlamydia infections at the same time. In 130 AD, Galen named the condition Gonorrhea (latin for "flow of seeds"), because the condition was associated with urethral discharge in men. There are an estimated 1. 5 million cases annually in the US. If untreated , gonorrhea can lead to fever, chills, and painful swelling of the genitals and prostate in men. In women, the gonorrhea infection can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes, resulting in sterility, ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Infected pregnant women will pass the disease on to their newborn babies, with the disease affecting the infant's eyes. In both sexes, extreme untreated infections can enter the bloodstream and affect the joints, heart , and brain How is Gonorrhea Spread?

    • Gonorrhea is passed during oral, anal or vaginal sex. It can be passed when the mucous membrane, the soft skin covering all the openings of the body, comes into contact with the mucous membrane secretions or semen of an infected person.
    • During oral sex, it is possible for gonorrhea to be transmitted from mouth-to-penis and penis-to-mouth contact, and though less so, from vagina-to-mouth or anus-to-mouth contact. Transmission is not known to occur from mouth-to-vagina and mouth to anus contact.
    • Gonorrhea can be passed even if the penis or tongue does not go all the way into the vagina or anus. If the vagina, cervix, anus, penis or mouth come in contact with infected secretions or fluids; then transmission is possible.

Gonorrhea increasingly resistant to antibiotics
ATLANTA, Georgia (Reuters) Gonorrhea, the nation's No. 2 sexually transmitted disease, is showing increased resistance to the antibiotics commonly used to treat it, federal health officials said on Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the drug-resistant strains are making it more difficult to successfully treat gonorrhea. More than 360,000 cases of the disease were reported last year.

Syphilis down, gonorrhea up in U.S., study finds
WASHINGTON (Reuters) Syphilis rates are the lowest they have been since officials started keeping track in the United States, the government said Tuesday, but gonorrhea rates have started a troubling rise. These figures suggest that targeted information campaigns work, and that keeping people in the dark about sexually transmitted diseases gives those illnesses a chance to take hold, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in its report, released at a meeting in Milwaukee.
