Definition
Goiter refers to any visible enlargement of the thyroid gland.
Description
The thyroid gland sits astride the trachea (windpipe) and is shaped like a butterfly. It makes thyroxin, a hormone that regulates the metabolic activity of the body, rather like the gas pedal on a car. Too much thyroxin increases the metabolism, causing weight loss, temperature elevation, nervousness, and irritability. Too little thyroxin slows the metabolism down, deepens the voice, causes weight gain and water retention, and retards growth and mental development in children. Both conditions also alter hair and skin growth, bowel function, and menstrual flow. Curiously, the thyroid gland is often enlarged whether it is making too much hormone, too little, or sometimes even when it is functioning normally. The thyroid is controlled by the pituitary gland, which secretes thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in response to the amount of thyroxin it finds in the blood. TSH increases the amount of thyroxin secreted by the thyroid and also causes the thyroid gland to grow.
  • Hyperthyroid goiterIf the amount of stimulating hormone is excessive, the thyroid will both enlarge and secrete too much thyroxin. The resulthyperthyroidism with a goiter. Graves' disease is the most common form of this disorder.

Thyroid Enlargement - Scintiscan
Thyroid Gland There are different kinds of goiters. A simple goiter usually occurs when the thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body's requirements. The thyroid gland compensates by enlarging, which usually overcomes mild deficiencies of thyroid hormone.
A simple goiter may be classified as either an endemic (colloid) goiter or a sporadic (nontoxic) goiter.

Hyperthyroid disorders don't always require the same treatment that I had.
Multinodular goiter is treated differently than Graves' Disease - I had no medication options. Molly b.
December, 2003 May 1997: I went to a doctor about feeling faint, dry eyes and weight loss. A series of blood tests showed that I was hyperthyroid. An appointment with a specialist was scheduled for October. I was given a prescription for Ativan, to take as needed, for 'anxiety attacks' which were really just rapid heartbeat reactions caused by the hyperthyroid symptoms. Five months is a very long time to be hyperthyroid with no treatment. Long term untreated hyperthyroidism can result in heart damage and more. If you have a hyperthyroid condition, don't delay getting it treated. I wouldn't have waited 5 months, if I'd had a choice. (This is what health 'cutbacks' do.)

http://www.hipusa.com/eTools/webmd/A-Z_Encyclopedia/goiterbasics.htm

The Basics
Symptoms What Are Goiters?
Goiters can be any one of several types of growths in the thyroid gland, located at the base of front side of the neck. In the case of Graves' disease, the entire thyroid gland becomes enlarged. Another type, called toxic nodular goiter, results when one or more nodules, or adenomas, develop in the thyroid and trigger excess production of thyroid hormone. A goiter may be a temporary problem that will remedy itself over time without medical intervention, or a symptom of another, possibly severe, thyroid condition that requires medical attention. What Causes Them? Goiters can occur when the thyroid gland produces either too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Much more rarely, the problem may arise when the pituitary gland stimulates thyroid growth to boost production of the hormone. Another type of thyroid growth, called a sporadic goiter, can form if your diet includes too many goiter-promoting foods, such as soybeans, rutabagas, cabbage, peaches, peanuts, and spinach. These foods can suppress the manufacture of thyroid hormone by interfering with your thyroid's ability to process iodide. Reviewed by Michael W. Smith

Some environmental pollutants, heavy metal poisonings, and certain drugs can also contribute to goiter formation. hypothyroidism and the symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, heavy menstrual bleeding in women, dry skin and hair, as well as goiter. Iodine-deficiency goiter can be common in regions where the soils and foods have insufficient iodine. Preschool children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and the elderly are most vulnerable to goiter and other iodine-deficiency disorders. Areas where iodine supplies are inadequate see high rates not only of goiter but also of birth defects and retardation of both mental and physical development. While iodine deficiency is the leading cause of goiter worldwide, it is a rare cause of goiter in the developed world. For this reason, any goiter that occurs in the developed world must be evaluated by a healthcare provider and its cause determined before any treatment is given.

If your doctor has diagnosed you as having a thyroid nodule, a thyroid lump or an enlargement of the thyroid known as goiter, you'll want to know more about the diagnosis and treatment process, the relationship between nodules to thyroid cancer, and followup.
    What is a Thyroid Nodule?
Thyroid nodules are very common. A nodule is a swelling or lump, which can be a solid or liquid filled cyst or mass. Most are benign, but a small percentage can be cancerous. So you should always have a nodule evaluated by your physician as soon as you notice it.
Symptoms of a nodule can be varied. Some people have hyperthyroidism symptoms such as palpitations, insomnia, weight loss, anxiety, and tremors and others have hypothyroidism symptoms weight gain, fatigue, depression. Some will cycle back and forth between hyperthyroid and hypothyroid symptoms. Some people mainly have difficulty swallowing, a feeling of fullness, pain or pressure in the neck, a hoarse voice, or neck tenderness. And finally, many people have nodules wiht no obvious symptoms related to thyroid dysfunction at all.
If you have a thyroid nodule, don't be very worried that it is cancerous. Only 5% of nodules are cancerous, and most forms of thyroid cancers are highly treatable and curable.
