WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Goiter is the medical term for enlargement of the thyroid gland. A butterfly shaped structure located in the front, lower section of the neck, the thyroid controls the speed at which the body's metabolism operates. In children, the thyroid is essential for normal growth and development. Goiter is often merely a symptom of a more serious thyroid condition, such as:
  • Hyperthyroidism , an overactive thyroid gland; Hypothyroidism , an underactive thyroid gland; Thyrotoxicosis , an excessive amount of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream; Graves' disease (also known as toxic diffuse goiter or exophthalmic goiter ), a form of hyperthyroidism.
If a child is born with an enlarged thyroid gland, it is referred to as congenital goiter . In some cases, a child may have

I was just entertained by the very morbid epiphany that when I look at how much I've paid in taxes at the end of this year, I won't be looking at the money I've put into this country for school programs, libraries, or good causes. I'll have purchased yet another casket that a dead American soldier will be sent home in.
Rest in Peace, soldier. Glad I could help out.
Corban 3:23 PM California has a ne GOVERNATOR ! I'm both amused and outraged by the common American idiocy that's exemplified in the outcome of this election. Amused for a couple of reasons, and outraged for far more than that. I'm amused because America now has its first GOVERNATOR . It's just funny to say. I can't get enough of it. A man who's spent more years in this country than I've spent alive and STILL hasn't lost that hideous accent has been voted into a political office. It also amuses me because however smart and superior Americans think they are, they prove, on a regular basis, and is evident by this election result, that we are easily led automatons just waiting to be told what to do. Aanold's speeches for the next few days should probably start with, "I would like to thank the media for shoving my name in the faces of all Californians so that I was the only person that stuck out." Followed by, "I would also like to thank my zombie...I mean, wife, for her family's political background. I no longer need her. Shoo!"

    Hyperthyroidism and Thyrotoxicosis
Thyrotoxicosis are the clinical, physiologic and biochemical syndromes that result when tissues are exposed to, and respond to high levels of thyroid hormone. In most instances, thyrotoxicosis is due to hyperactivity of thyroid gland, or hyperthyroidism (hypermetabolism). Occasionally, thyrotoxicosis may be due to other causes such as excessive ingestion of thyroid hormone or secretion form ectopic sites. There are various forms of thyrotoxicosis and the most common is Graves’ Disease.
    Definition
Graves’ disease, also known as Parry’s or Basedow’s disease or diffuse toxic goiter, is a disorder with three major manifestations: hyperthyroidism with diffuse goiter, ophthalmopathy, and dermopathy. They do not appear together. Indeed, one or two need never appear, and moreover, the three may run courses that are largely independent of one another.
    Prevalence
It is the most common form of thyrotoxicosis. It affects as many as 1.9 per cent of the female population. The ratio of women to men is as high as 7:1. It reaches its peak incidence between the third and forth decades and the reason for the female predominance in this as in all thyroid diseases is unknown. Genetic factors play an important role, since there is an increased frequency haplotypes HLA-B8 and -DRw3 in Caucasian, HLA-Bw36 in Japanese, and HLA-Bw46 in Chinese patients with the disease.
    Etiology and Pathogenesis
Graves’ disease is currently viewed as an autoimmune disease of unknown cause. Hyperthyroidism is its principal manifestation, yet TSH is suppressed and no intrinsic abnormalities in the gland have been identified.

Overview Goiter is an enlargement of your thyroid gland. Although generally not uncomfortable, goiter may interfere with swallowing or breathing. The possible causes are numerous. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland weighing less than an ounce, located just below your Adam's apple. Hormones produced by your thyroid gland regulate all aspects of your metabolism, from the rate at which your heart beats to the speed at which you burn calories. Goiter doesn't necessarily mean your thyroid gland isn't producing hormones normally. Even when enlarged, your thyroid may produce below-normal, normal or above-normal amounts of hormones.

    General Description

    Possible Causes
    • Iodine deficiency is the largest known cause of goiter. Iodine is vital to the formation of thyroid hormone.
    • An overproduction of thyroid stimulating hormone in the pituitary gland in response to a defect in normal hormone synthesis within the thyroid gland.
    • Certain medications in high doses, such as lithium or aminoglutethimide can cause a nontoxic goiter.
    • A family history of congenital goiter.
    • In most cases of sporadic goiter the cause is unknown.
    Possible Complications
    • Both under and overactive thyroid, if left untreated, can lead to life-threatening complications.
    • The goiter mass will sometimes compress the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (swallowing tube), causing difficulty in breathing and swallowing.
    • Malignancy (cancer) within a multinodular enlarged thyroid is seldom the case, but does happen in at least 5% of cases.
    • Thyrotoxicosis, an excessive amount of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream.

    • Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in front of and on the sides of the "Adam's apple" on the neck. The cause of endemic goiter is iodine deficiency in the diet. Thus the term endemic refers to goiter that is prevalent in a certain part or region of the world, usually mountain areas where the soil is low in iodine content. Less commonly, goiter is caused by substances in the food or water that increase the likelihood of iodine deficiency.

GOITER Goiter is a swelling of the thyroid gland and it can become painful and interfere with swallowing. I believe that goiter is the normal response of the body to increase thyroid size and output when mineral deficiencies prevent the thyroid from being able to make enough hormone. The two main mineral deficiencies which are known to cause goiter are iodine and selenium. Please see the pages on both of these two minerals and the article on selenium and iodine interaction. Another mineral deficiency that is associated with goiter is iron. The following study indicates that iron helps to reduce goiter size. This is excellent evidence that iron is critical for thyroid function and that iron-deficiency anemia is often an important factor in causing hypothyroidism.
