GLAUCOMA What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is the elevation of pressure inside the eye ( intraocular pressure ) beyond a specific point at which vision is no longer possible. Glaucoma is a frequent cause of blindness in humans and in our pets. To understand glaucoma, it is necessary to understand how the fluid inside the eye normally flows and maintains normal intraocular pressure. Fluid inside the eye ( aqueous humor ) is produced behind the colored area of the eye ( iris ) in a portion of the eye called the ciliary body. This aqueous humor is made by filtering blood. The fluid flows through the dark hole in the eye ( pupil ). Finally the aqueous humor drains from the eye at the junction of the clear cornea and the colored iris ( drainage angle ) inside the eye and then the aqueous rejoins the blood. The drainage angle is a sieve-like network. This aqueous humor is made inside the eye and passes from the eye at the same rate. This results in a stable intraocular pressure of 15-25 mm of Hg. Glaucoma is the consequence of a blockage of the outflow of aqueous humor and a subsequent buildup of pressure inside the eye. The resulting high pressure compresses the optic nerve and results in pain and in blindness. Are there types of glaucoma?

http://www.preventblindness.org/eye_tests/glaucoma.html
Glaucoma Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States today. It is a gradual, progressive eye disease associated with pressure build-up within the eye. It usually progresses with no pain or other symptoms. Although sight lost to glaucoma can never be restored, early diagnosis and prompt treatment may bring glaucoma under control and halt its progress. If you answer yes to the following questions, you are at a higher risk for glaucoma, and Prevent Blindness America recommends you see your doctor annually.
  • Do you have diabetes?
  • Do you have blood relatives with glaucoma?
  • Has a doctor treated you for or said you have glaucoma?
  • Have you had an eye injury or eye surgery?
  • Have you noticed a change in vision in the last 12 months?
  • Are you African-American and over the age of 45?
  • Are you over age 65?
  • Was your last eye exam more than two years ago?
  • Was your last dilated eye exam more than two years ago?
If you answered yes to one or more questions, you should arrange for a professional eye exam. For more information about glaucoma, contact

Q : What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of diseases usually associated with increased pressure within the eye. (Some types of glaucoma are primary open-angle, angle-closure, secondary, congenital, juvenile and low-tension.) This pressure can cause damage to the cells that form the optic nerve, the structure responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. The damage is progressive with loss of peripheral vision first, followed by reductions in central vision and, potentially, blindness.
Q : How many people have glaucoma?
Between two million and three million Americans age 40 and over, or about one in every 30 people in that age group have glaucoma. This includes those who are unaware they have the eye disease.
Q : How many people have glaucoma and don't know it?
At least one half of all those who have glaucoma are unaware of it.

Eye tests can pick up glaucoma Glaucoma occurs when the nerve at the back of the eye becomes damaged. This can cause a person's sight to deteriorate and can lead to blindness. What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is the name given to a group of conditions that affect the eye. There are four different types of glaucoma - acute, chronic, developmental and secondary. In each case, the optic nerve behind the eye is damaged. This nerve carries information from the eye to the brain enabling us to see. This damage can be caused by a weak nerve or more usually by the build-up of fluid in the eye. This occurs when fluid in the eye cannot drain properly. Acute glaucoma can occur suddenly and can be painful. If left untreated, it can lead to blindness. Chronic glaucoma is the most common form of the condition. The drainage channels from the eye become blocked over time and vision gradually becomes impaired. Developmental glaucoma mostly affects babies and young children. It is rare but potentially serious and is caused by malformation of the eye.

Although there are several types of glaucoma we will limit our focus here to primary open angle glaucoma. Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness in the United States. It is generally characterized by a clinical triad: (1) elevated intraocular (eye) pressure ; (2) development of optic nerve atrophy ; and (3) loss of peripheral field of vision Over the years, numerous investigators have studied the characteristics of individuals who have glaucoma, and based on those studies it became possible for them to identify several factors that seem to occur more frequently in glaucoma patients. Since there is a greater likelihood of these factors being present in someone with glaucoma, it is reasonable to assume that these be considered as risk factors for glaucoma. Any individual who has these risk factors should be screened for the possibility of glaucoma. It is estimated that approximately 10 patients per 1000 patients with glaucoma risk factors will develop glaucoma per year. This prompted Medicare to announce a Glaucoma screening benefit in January 2002. (View

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by increased pressure behind the eyeball, when detected early enough through regular eye exams is easily treatable.
People who have their eyes regularly checked with either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist as part of a routine eye exam will be as part of the exam tested for a serious eye disease known as glaucoma. This is a relatively silent disease that can strike at anytime, and when symptoms are finally detected, for some it may be too late. There are two types of glaucomaacute and chronic. Thankfully the acute form is rare, but nonetheless when it does occur, immediate treatment should be sought to prevent permanent loss of vision. bodyOffer(23046) Basically, glaucoma is a condition where pressures will build up within the eyeball. It is like a sink that is filling up with water, and with the drain closed. If you place some kind of a flexible cover over the sink, the cover will start to bulge outward. Similarly, this is what happens inside the eyeball, and if left untreated can lead to impaired vision or permanent blindness. The eye normally discharges this buildup of fluid through a network of tissues called a drainage angle. Problems begin when proper drainage within the eyeball does not take place through this area called the drainage angle, which is located between the iris and the cornea. As long as this drainage angle does not function correctly, the pressures will continue to build in the eyeball, and this in turn will reduce the blood flow to the retina and the optic nerve.

Guarding Against Glaucoma
by S.J. Ackerman An outstanding scholar still in his 30s, John felt his "sight getting weak and dull"occupational eyestrain, he supposed. Soon his left eye dimmed, starting from the left side. Then his right eye failed, "perceptibly and gradually over three years." By age 43, he was totally blind. That was in 1652. John Milton triumphed over blindness, still serving the British foreign office and writing literary classics like "Paradise Lost." Yet he never ceased lamenting "how my light is spent/Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide." What relegated him to seeing "a universal blank" was probably open-angle glaucoma, which today needlessly blinds 80,000 Americans each year. It causes another 900,000 to lose some vision. Yet now we have means Milton lacked to thwart "the sneak thief of sight" with a number of treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Glaucomas are a group of diseases sharing certain features, commonly including high intraocular pressure (IOP), damaged optic nerves, and loss of peripheral vision. Early detection can contain two glaucomas: chronic (sometimes called common) and acute. Primary open-angle glaucoma (chronic glaucoma) affects mostly adults over age 35. This most prevalent glaucoma is the sneak-thief disease without noticeable symptoms. By the time it's detected, it has started doing damage.
